I'm Hungry All The Time....

I sometimes still feel so sick, but then other times I just can't stop eating. I feel like I'm just so hungry. Does any one know what this is all about?

Been gluten-free for 10 months, rarely get glutened anymore, tend to have a very regular, daily diet. But, some days, like today, I just cannot stop eating. I guess it's snacking. I will get a gluten-free cookie, then some yogurt, then some cottage cheese, then another cookie, ect... I have been under weight for the pass 10 years, but in the last 4 months have actually gained weight up to a normal weight for my height.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Lollie

I experienced (and sometimes still do) this especially

just after starting the gluten free diet. It is very important

to keep a balanced diet as well as having correct vitamin/mineral

intake. This, keeping in mind that our bodies may not assimilate

all foods etc. due to level of damage.

-For instance, I'm allergic to many

proteins and had

to find alternatives to balance out my

diet which included

a sublingual b-complex to replace b-12

that I was not getting.

I tend to eat smaller portions

more often during the day too.

Once your body

is actually getting the nutrients it needs

that incessant hunger should fade away.

are you getting enough fat/fiber/protein? what you list there, aside from the cottage cheese, looks like it's probably pretty high in sugar and not too helpful to balanced blood sugar levels... that'll keep you hungry and snacking.

Yeah, I do have a hard time keeping my diet balanced. I do have a hard time breaking down proteins. I tend to get mostly dairy for proteins. I do eat a large range of veggies and fruit. I eat rice and eggs. I don't know. I guess maybe today I started out going down the wrong path.....But, those molasses cookies are just so good!!!! I guess I will try and eat a really healthy lunch, maybe a veggie omelette....We'll see if that helps the cravings!

Thanks!

Its funny, I too have gained weight the last month or so after being underweight for about a year. Since Jan. of last year I've been so diligent in tracking all my foods in a diary followed by symptoms and being so careful of everything then in August my son came home for 2 weeks from being on a long cruise ( the Navy) in the gulf and I hadn't seen him in a year.

I made all of his favorite meals of course and we all went out to eat so many times and had to meet so many people who wanted to see Luke its like everything I did went out the window. Well most things, I did my best to feel like I was having things they were eating.

I haven't been able to go back to the same level of strict eating,...its how I feel the best but I'm having dairy and sweets and its so nice.

Anyway I'm also laughing cuz for lunch yesterday I had a vegetable omelette.

Can you do nuts/peanuts? I used to eat those a lot-they were very filling for me and really helped with the feeling full part. What about gluten free crackers or pretzels (dipped in a sour cream or cheese dip)? Those might keep you fuller, longer.

I find that just getting enough protein isn't enough. I also need fat and fiber. It really needs to be *balanced*. I wish it were easier! Nuts are better than carbs for holding me over, but not great on their own. It's kinda wacky, and tough figuring out what is the key for each of us. Don't be too worried about fat content (if it's healthy fat). If you keep portions small, it's all good.

Also be mindful of eating when you're not actually hungry. I fall into spurts of that, and I find that it's either when I'm bored or restless, or not drinking enough liquid.

Thanks everybody. I think that maybe it's eating because I am bored, or whatever. I have never done that before, but maybe because I am healed up better now, I actually will have to think about it. When before, I didn't, because I was always sick. I don't really know. I will try harder tomorrow, start out better. With a protein, instead of surgary cereal, and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again

I suggest eating protein to help with the hunger. Are you a vegetarian?

Salmon and other fish are really good choices. Try to balance your protein and try not to eat the same foods all the time.

I've been overweight since this started (6 years ago), but after going gluten free (1 month now yay!) I've lost 15lbs. And suddenly I'm famished. I had lost my sense of hunger, and I think it's back, with avengance. I'm back to a normal number of calories. I eat a TON of vegis and fruit, good protien, some rice/pasta (gluten-free of course!), and the occasional couple of chips or some chocolate.

Anyway, I'm assuming ur body (and mine) is realizing that it WANTS food. Ur not gonna give it poison anymore, so it's morphed into the cookie monster lol. It wants nutrients!

I say, eat when you are hungry, don't when your not. As long as you are balancing cookies with nutritious wonderfulness, you should be fine.

It's so weird how used to not eating I had been. Then when I went gluten-free I started trying to eat regularly. Then yesterday, do be starving and continously eating.....it is just so.....Normal!

I have started the day out better today. Now lets see if I can keep the cookies to minimum!!!!!

Thanks for all the advice! I went and got some nuts last night to be prepared for today! I am vegitarian, so I get alot of protein from eggs, dairy, nuts, and beans. (Can't really do soy, seems to make me sick!)

Thanks again!

I was wondering about all this too. I can't stop eating and I eat meat protein, fiber, fats, nuts, etc. I am hungry again 1 hour after each meal. I go 2 hours at the most without eating something.

I think it is because I am feeling so much better and busy all of the time. I sure hope this levels out soon.

So far, no weight gain. :)

I did that too! How long have you been gluten-free? I have been for 10 months, but at the beginning, maybe the first 4 months, I couldn't stop eating at all, and I guessed the same thing. Then it leveled out for a while then bam! Back again. But this time I have gained some weight, which isn't bad, for me. I needed to gain some, but I don't want it to get out of control!

Just wanted to say that I am not hungry but am always craving my favorites that are no longer allowed. I have been gluten-free for over two years now and make pretty tasty meals and such. But I'm always wishing for a piece of pizza, good crusty bread, or a tortellini dish, etc. and I wind up eating this and that and never feel really satisfied. It doesn't help that I'm the only Celiac in the family. Julie

I actually felt unbelievable hunger off and on for nearly 2 years after my diagnosis. Since I've hit the 2 year mark, I haven't had that experience. I think it takes the body a while to adjust to the change, and I think it took me quite some time to make sure that I was getting everything I needed. One of my favorite things for combatting hunger is avocado--I make some guacamole and have it with a few tortilla chips and then I'm satisfied for quite a while.

I feel hungry very often too. I don't go more than 2,5 hours without eating. It is crazy.

I'm ALWAYS hungry now...always snacking on something. I try to stay away from junk food as much as I can but I can eat awhole bag of Tinkinyada by myself!

My son is ALWAYS hungry - in fact, in our large extended family, that is what he is well known for. His whole life he has been ravenous, but not overweight. He is 5'8" or so and 145 pounds.

We havent gotten a diagnosis yet, but are hoping to see improvement on the gluten-free diet. Waiting on test results.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again
    • trents
You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
