Contamination

Ok I just spent the last 20 minutes giggling at the poo conversation and I think I've finally worked up the nerve to ask some questions about other forms of contamination. I've drawn the line at kids drinking out of my bottle of water/soda etc...but what about other ways my family can contaminate me?! Can I get it from a kiss? Do I need my husband to rinse his mouth with water before he kisses me? Ok and here is the most embarrasing one...If he isn't gluten-free, can it be passed on from "relations". I know it sounds silly and even adolescent but these questions have been driving me crazy and I don't know who to ask, especially since every medical professional I talk to I wind up giving a crash course in Celiac 101. Thanks for any info you can pass on, and thanks to all for the light-heartedness of some of these postings, they really make my day!

you know, I had the same question and was told that no "relations" couldn't contaminate me, but then why do I seem to react? Hormones?

Anyway, with kissing, as long as he rinses out his mouth or brushes teeth you should be fine

Hi Amy,

Welcome in :) , and don't ever feel embarassed to ask a question!

This one has been asked before--and for good reason :D If your husband has been eating anything containing gluten, ask him to brush his teeth, maybe use some mouthwash, and rinse well. As far as the "other" bodily fluid--no problem ;)

Thanks so much for your replies. I have always felt as if I'm getting glutened somehow, although I'm very cautious and my family is extremly supportive. Sometimes my kids are better at picking out questionable things than I am :) . I also noticed far less regular problems last year when he was stationed in Korea. Hee hee, now I guess when I feel romantic instead of lighting candles or such I'll lay a toothbrush on his pillow!!

Oh Amy, that is too funny

If you kiss your kids' cheeks a lot you might want to check whatever sort of lotion/cream/glittery lipstick they are using.

Our home is gluten-free because I was not getting better ... the first thing hubby does when he gets home is brush his teeth ... then he's "safe" for the rest of the time here!! ;)

Boy, this illness certainly takes the spontanaeity out of our relationships, doesn't it? Man, toothbrushes on our pillows...Gone are the days of suddenly throwing my arms around DH and kissing him silly...sigh.... ;):(

That's why my hubby's always gluten-free at home. ;) On dates, too.

Yea, but I bet we never thought that the sound of our husbands brushing their teeth would make our minds "turn to thoughts of love..."

That is so cute! My husband feels just awful that he could be the source of contamination that has been going on. He really trys so hard as well as our kids. But just when I think I have a good handle on things and we are all feeling pretty "normal"...BLAMO another thing to look out for. This disease can be so frustrating! Thanks to all who replied, it gave me some great answers and things to watch out for as well.

we are happy you asked...nothing is off limits here!

my husband always brushes his teeth and rinses before we kiss. we don't even kiss on the lips at all until he is safe (because I am extremely sensitive)....but it is something he is happy to do....bc what would make someone feel worse than making the one you love sick?

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
