Walmart (great Value) Soy Sauce?

Has anyone else tried to Wal-Mart Great Value Soy Sauce? It says gluten free on the label, so I bought some last week. Now I am wondering if it really is gluten free.

I made fried rice and lo mein last night and used the Great Value Gluten Free Soy Sauce. Last night I started to feel SICK. Today I can hardly handle the stomach cramps, diarrhea and just general pain. I have been gluten free since 8/17/06 and I think this is the first time I have been glutened. Everything else I used last night I have used before with no ill effect. So I am thinking it had to be the soy sauce. Anyone else used it and noticed a problem? Or is it just me?

I only have a second and will try to post again later, but....whenever I get into gluten or have a reaction to something I eat I take digestive enzymes from a company out of Houston called Transformation Enzymes. They work wonderful and decrease my symptoms to nothing! I have a contact of a Dr. that will work with celiacs over the phone if you would like more information on them. I wish I had more time but my grandchildren are here, as we have a new grandbaby. I really think every celiac/gluten sensitive person would be helped by being on really good digestive enzymes no matter where they come from (if they are good that is). Also, probiotic! The minute I begin to feel those old symptoms coming on out my bottles come and out the window go the symptoms! Must run...

maybe it's the msg or too much sodium??

It could also be the soy itself . . . have you been eating much soy recently? Perhaps the increased amount in the sauce "got you". Or . . . you might just have a bug. It is that time of year. . . Or it could be the gv soy sauce . . . hope someone else will chime in with more helpful info.

Thank you, I never thought about the amount of soy. This is the first time I have had any soy sauce since going gluten free. Altough I didn't use a lot, it may just be my body couldn't tolerate the small amount I did get.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions.

Just made a Thai Pork Noodle Bowl with our "cool new find" the great value soy sauce. This is the worst reaction I've had in a while. I eat soy ALL the time, so I can vouch, at least for me, that it is not that.

Perhaps we should contact Great Value.... I'm very disappointed as I have never had trouble with GV brand before either --- although they label things that should be gluten-free anyway...

OK so I've been thinking about your problem for a while now. I have not used wall mart brands soy sauce yet, but I've used other kinds. I've had the same problems with anything soy if i drink milk or have something dairy after or before. A like horrible gurgling sound coming from your abdomen kind:) Think back to everything you had the day you had it try again and check what you eat and see what your results are, you now what I mean.Good luck!

I appreciate the advice and thought. :D

I'm a dietitian and I keep a food record, every day, of exactly what I eat (anal I know). But it comes in handy in times like these.

I tolerate wheat-free tamari (had some about a week ago in fact) without issues at all. Soy-based and corn-based products are the staples of my diet.

Nothing I ate that day was anything I had not had before, on a regular (daily) basis - and 90% of it was from a package or something that had already been open, so that means the batch did not contain gluten.

I reacted within an hour of eating the soy sauce - that's typical for me.

That said, I have found 3 other posts dating back to 2005 that had issues with wal-mart brand soy sauce. It's fishy, to say the least. I'm waiting to see what Corporate Wally has to say.

I've cooked with the GV brand of soy sauce and I've never had a problem with it. I've been using it for about a year now.

When I first went gluten free it was several months (close to a year) before I could tolerate soy or dairy products.

Rya Newbie

Thanks again for the input, it's good to know other Celiacs are using it.

I do tolerate soy, contrary to popular belief on this forum. :P

I'm curious as to the ppm in the soy sauce now... I suppose this has become my pet project for a few days.

Anyone else have experience with it?

I don't have soy sauce frequently but when I do the Walmart is the one. I haven't had a problem with it.

Hello Everyone,

I am another person who noticed a reaction to this product. Before I say anything, I should mention: I'm currently in the phase of trying to figure out what I have through a diet record. I am not necessarily gluten intolerant, although I have reason to suspect whey.

I had had no milk that day, and I have had soy before and since without issue.

My reaction to it was as follows:

- Extreme exhaustion

- Nausea

- Flushing

- Uneasy feeling

- Possible heart burn

- 20 beat per minute increase in heat rate over normal (70 to 90)

- Nasal congestion

It has caramel color. I have heard some say that that should be fine for gluten (according to the product label, it does say gluten-free), but also heard it can contain milk as a result of that. Who knows whether that is valid or not. The other natural question is MSG.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
