Can Celiacs Or Gi People Have Pop/soda?

I am going to try eliminating gluten from my diet and I have some questions:

1. Can Celiacs or gluten intolerant people have pop/soda?

2. Is it okay to have oats/oatmeal?

While I'm here, I just noticed on my GI panel that the anti-gliadin test that I had done was actually SIgA (saliva). Is that as accurate as testing stool? Seems like from what I have read it's not.

Here are my results:

Gliadin AB, SIgA 34

range:

Borderline: 13-15 U/ml

Positive: >15 U/ml

What do my tests results mean to those of you that are living with Celiacs or Gluten Intolerance? If I am just gluten intolerant, can that be reversed eventually when my "leaky gut" is healed up???? My naturopath had me tested for food sensitivities too, and regarding gluten/grains, I scored low. I'm confused. If these were your test results, would you completely cut out gluten? I am so new to this. I am waiting for a couple of books to be returned at the library so I can learn more. Any help you all have would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know of any soda that is not gluten-free. Soft drinks made by the Pepsi Cola Company and those made by the Coca Cola Company are all gluten-free. Don't worry about caramel color; it's one of those celiac urban myths.

Oats are a subject of controversy, but most of us avoid them since they are almost always seriously contaminated with wheat.

Thank you Peter for your help on that. I didn't think pop had gluten, but wasn't sure. I don't drink much, but if I'm going to try this diet, I want to get it right.

How is it that oats contain wheat? Can someone explain this to me? I just buy Quaker 100% rolled oats. Do those have wheat in them?

Does anyone else have any input re: my test results? I know test results can be sketchy or not very valid compared to symptoms, but I would like to know what you think of the tests I had done thus far.

The tests you've had aren't a very strong proof of celiac. But I assume you have some symptoms to suspect it? If you don't want to pursue further testing for some reason, going gluten free for a while and seeing if your symptoms improve is also a way to test it. :) For a dietary test to be valid though you need to be 100% gluten free, otherwise you migth not improve and then you might think it's not the gluten even if it is, see what I mean?

The deal with oats is, during harvesting and milling and packaging and all that there's almost always serious cross contamination with wheat. There are a few special producers of guaranteed gluten free oats. But some celiacs also react to pure oats, so at this point, when you are still trying to find out what is wrong, I would avoid them completely.

quaker oats are not safe. even though the ingredients per se are, the growing and processing are NOT.

mccann's irish oats are supposed to be safe. they are grown and processed safely. but, there is still concerns bc the oat protein is very, very, very similar to the gluten protein.

and i'm drinking a coke right now :)

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.
