Hello

i am in maui on the last night of my honeymoon. i have yet to knowlign be glutened as i dont eat at restaurants and our house is gluten-free. tonight we had strawberries covere din chocolate brought ot the room. we called dowon and they said there was no gluten in the chocolat sauce so i ate one strawberry. two minutes later we got a call saying there in fact was wheat listed on teh ingredient list. i have to travel tommorow night for more than 14 hours and i am just terrified now that i will be really sick. i know ppl sometimes get delayed reactiosn and im scared mine will hit on the plane. i already have major problems flying so i dont know what i will do. i havent even eaten otu once on this trip becaue im so anal about being gluten free but i took a chance and now im screwed.......

anyone have any good advice/thoughts....

thanks

Jess

i actually posted my post last night but it only popped up today i think casue the board was done.

the update is i went to bed right after then woke up 3 hours later feeling VERY nausesos. i wasnt sure if i was supposed to let myself be sick and throwup to get rid of the gluten but i took an anti-nausent and felt asleep. right now i feel better. will i feel sick again later or was that the "reaction".......

I am sorry you got glutened last night. You never know, it was a tiny amount. It is impossible to say if you had your reaction, or if it will get worse. I wished I'd know. I find those reactions are so totally unpredictable, you never know what will happen from one glutening to another.

I really hope you'll be fine on your flight.

Jess--you poor little thing :(

I'm sorry your post got temporarily lost, and by now you're on your way home. I hope that you didn't get any sicker--I would have done what you did anyway. Take whatever you need to to get home. I would have been popping Immodium!

Let us know how you made out--then all about the wedding :D

Jess,

I am so sorry to hear about your glutening. I hope you are ok. Keep some immodiums with you!

Can't wait to hear about it,

Laura

thanks guys. havent left just yet. we have 5 hours left in the hotel until we leave. they extended our check out time because of what happened. i feel sort of weird- nauseous and bloated stomach but not super ill as most people describe when they eat gluten. im hoping last nights bad bout of nausea is my reaction and that i wont be majorly sick in the next 24 hours. i dont get back until 5pm thursday night. i'm going to try my best to stay positive, think about seeing my puppy who i miss so much and hopefully get through this easily!! i hate gluten!! who puts wheat in chocolate sauce anyways??!!

thanks carla! im sort of embarrased that i didnt eat out but im just scared to do it. i brought a hot pot, and they gave me a fridge and amicrowave. i brought pasta, bread and snacks adn then went to the local health store and bought cheese, tomatoe sauce, more bread, veggies etc.... we had this room where we could go and get free happy hour and breakfast so i would take fruits and veggies from there as well. i used the hotpot to make pasta, rice quinoa etc... and had sandwiches for lunch. i took a chance by eating the strawberries- something iw ouldnt normally do but they were sent up as a gift with a bottle of champagne.....

i'm not sure if hte symptoms i had are it- im scared ill get a big reaction in the next 24 hours :(

Sometimes I work myself up to a horrible state when I know I've had gluten. Just try and relax, have medicine nearby, and try not to worry. I usually only get the gas and bloat when I get glutened...which I am suffering through right now (see my post)...so I feel your pain :)

Hope the flight goes well!!!

so now i have really bad pain, sort of like period cramps, very low, under my belly button in the pelvic region. could that be a delayed gluten reaction stomach ache or are stomach aches not usually that low??? so weird and not sure what it is... i also feel like i cant go to the bathroom easily so maybe it could be constipation which i dont think i ve ever had b4

hey jess,

did you take immodiums or anything to stop/prevent D? if so, that might give you C.

I hope you feel better soon.

And yes, your picture is beautiful-I can't wait to see more.

Constipation can be terrible. I've only had it once. On vacation too. I used exlax. It really helped but took 24 hours. The pain was excruciatng. Hang in there, this too shall pass. : ) no pun intended.

Thanks a lot for your response! Can you maybe specify which kind of cheeses I should be cautious about? Camembert/Brie and blue cheeses (the molds of which are nowadays mostly grown on gluten-free media, though, so I've read, right?) or other ones as well? Also, I was under the impression that yeast is generally gluten-free if not declared otherwise. Is that false?

I agree with @trents, but thank you for bringing this up here!

Hi @trents, yes I've had my levels checked in Dec 2025 which revealed vit D deficiency. I considered eggs although they only contain about 45 IU vitamin D/egg. I need 2000 IU vitamin D for maintenance as per my doctor. Although now, I likely need way more than that to treat the deficiency. My doctor has yet to advise me on dosing for deficiency. I've also considered cod liver oil, although again, if it's processed in a facility that has gluten, especially on flour form, I worried to test it, even if they have protocols in place to mitigate cross-contamination with gluten.

Welcome to celiac.com, @Jane02! Have you had your serum D levels checked for deficiency/sufficiency? What about cod liver oil? Egg yolks can also be a good source of vitamin D.

Hello, I'm very discouraged. I've been trying to find a safe vitamin mineral supplement brand for months and am tired of testing one after the other and experiencing my typical 'glutening' reactions. I'm really feeling the nutritional deficiencies set in. I'm doing the best I can to get these nutrients from my food, although it's impossible for me to intake enough vitamin D as I can't have dairy and have insufficient sun exposure in the northern hemisphere. I've tried B Complex from Country Life (certified gluten-free) - horrible reaction. I've tried Metagenics vitamin D tab (certified glute-free) - bad reaction. I've tried liquid vitamin D Thorne and D Drops - reactions were mild since I tried a drop of a drop. I understand there could be other things I'm reacting to in my diet, although my diet/intake is pretty consistent with minimal variables so I do think it's something in these supplements. I understand I could be reacting to the active ingredient vitamin/mineral itself or even the filler ingredients. I tried the vitamin D drops since the only filler ingredient is coconut oil, in some brands, which I know I can tolerate really well on its own - I cook with coconut oil frequently and have no 'glutening' reactions at all. Perhaps I'm reacting to the vitamin D itself, although I eat fatty fish every few days, an entire fillet with no 'glutening' reactions, which contains anywhere between 400-600 IU per fillet so I shouldn't be sensitive to vitamin D. All this to say, I'm desperately looking for at least a safe vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know of a safe vitamin D supplement brand? I'd love to know if there are any supplement brands that have absolutely no gluten (especially in flour form) in their facilities. I've heard of Kirkman having no grains in their facility - I may try this brand. Has anyone reacted to this brand?
