Happy Times! I Feel So Much Better!

Its been a rough go for the past year or so for me. Went gluten free in August and solved my neurological problems with numbness, tingling and weakness. So I thought that a strict adherance to the gluten free diet would be enough for me to improve all the others stuff, like the exhaustion, insomnia, depression, brain fog,back pain, and anxiety. I felt completely hopeless. Until now.

It feels like the black fog has lifted. What I realized is that even though I was strictly gluten free, I was still consuming foods that my body reacted to. I was afraid to limit my diet further but I felt I needed to do something. I knew I had sensitivities to dairy, and egg, but I still consumed them in small amounts because I thought that I needed the variation. Also I noticed I didnt feel right eating the gluten-free baked goods, like the breads and cookies and all gluten-free processed foods. So now that I eliminated dairy, egg, and the baked goods I feel a tremendous shift. I am now just eating meats, fish, poultry, veggies, fruits, and nuts. What a difference!

Im also taking some good supplements. This one supplement Im taking for magnesium is awesome. Its a powdered supplement that you mix with water. It makes me feel more calm and for some reason helps control my blood sugar from dropping.

I finally feel human again. :lol:

ps. I have to stay away from those gluten-free goodies too. Maybe when we are healed .....

Many who visit this site are in the maelstrom of celiac suffering. Those of us who have gone through it know there is nothing worse - it seems to attack not only your body, but your mind, making you feel like you'll never escape.

But there is hope, the body DOES heal. When the fog lifts and health returns, it's absolutely amazing the difference.

To any celiacs reading this who feel hopeless, do NOT give up hope. Avoid the "poison", be patient, and you will be a new person in time.

I have also started to feel better. It took a while for me to figure out I can't handle any Legumes at all and I kept eating legumes for a long time after I stopped with casein and gluten.

I am very paranoid with preemade/processed food in general. Seems I have gotten sick from stuff that shouldn't make me sick. I have had problems eating this corn chips brand (Mission) and they have started to print on their bags that the chips are made on the same machine as casein products. So now I know why.

I eat pretty much the same as you. I seem to be ok with egg and corn. I have tried small amounts of it and so far so good, but I doubt I will ever get big on it. I try to follow Dr Fine's advice.

I am allergic to nuts though, so I don't eat any of that. I am allergic to a bunch of fruits too so that is a little tricky too.

I am thinking baout getting allergy shots for the nuts and fruit, but I am not sure.

Congrats on feeling better. I know it's hard to give up those last few things, but those subtle effects are often less subtle than we think they are. ;)

I am so glad you are feeling better. I had a hard time accepting that I had to do the same thing when I was first healing but I ended up eating basically like you are and am surprised how much of a difference it makes. I still stay away from most mainstream stuff and feel better for it. I never thought I would be happy eating a 'fast food' meal that is fish and veggies wrapped in foil and baked instead of frys and burger. It can be so hard to figure out what our bodies need but when we do what a difference it makes. Congratulations on your hard healing work finally paying off.

It sounds like you're eating nearly a paleo diet. :) I think it is a tremendous way to eat. Sure, might not be as immediately gratifying as dumping lots of grains, starches and sugar down the gullet, but it pays off in good health! Much easier to control the weight too.

Thats wonderful Stef! I feel better when I stay away from grains also. Giving up dairy was very hard though,....I still cheat with that one with a little cheese here and there. If I was just grocery shopping for me I'd literally would just need to shop the perimeter of the store except for olive oil. They've been tellling us to do that for years, and I remember thinking who does that! Its weird how life is.

Glad you are feeling better! I also gave up eggs, most dairy, and most processed stuff and felt better afterwards. Just wanted to note that someone on the board pointed out that they sometimes use eggs to clarify red wines. So, I just crossed red wine off my list for a while too. :( But, rather not drink it than continue with puffy eyes and headaches.

This sucks. There is one more thing that I must give up now. Beans. I was out today running errands and when I do that I usually like to bring out some soup in a thermos and have it in between errands. I was really hungry with an empty stomach, and I ate my black bean soup that I love so much. And then WHAM! :blink: A bastard headache, backache, and a pain in my side.

Now I feel overwhemed, I thought I had it all figured out. Hopefully this will be the last item I cross off my list.

I'm glad you're feeling better; its good to know that you are successfully navigating this sometimes confusing area and are figuring out what your body needs (or doesn't need right now)! I think most of us here have been / are in the same boat as you are, and we "overstand"!!! :lol:

I've had to shed - in addition to dairy/casein which I've always been allergic to - peanuts, chocolate (not sure what it is in the chocolate, but its a scary reaction!), sugar, shellfish, most processed foods and, most recently potatoes, eggs and soy. I'm a vegetarian, so no meat either; I really can't stomach it. I've also like some of you been limiting my grains recently - not entirely on purpose, though - and am amazed at how much better and lighter I feel. I haven't had beans in a while, actually...humnnn...I wonder if that's another thing to look into?? :blink:

Who knew that this diagnosis would lead to such major life changes? I sure didn't! However I see it as a new lease on life, though at times things may seem overwhelming...

The tough thing about stopping eating the foods that do this to us is, in my very recent experience (I've just started an elimination diet) the withdrawal effects, as often the things that are worse for us are the ones we're addicted to.

Glad to hear you are feeling much better. Isn't it amazing what a change in food can do? Talk about a whole new light. I know personally I feel like a whole new person.

      Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

      Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes

      EXACTLY! I was asked yesterday on my LAST video call with Standford and I stated exactly yes absolutely this is why I need the name! One, get proper care, two, not get worse.Im falling apart, stressed out, in pain and just opened email from Stanford stating I was rude ect.I want that video reviewed by higher ups and see if that women still has a job or not.Im saying this because I've been medically screwed and asking for help because bills don't pay itself. This could be malpratice siit but im not good at finding lawyers

      We feel your pain. It took me 20+ years of regularly going to doctors desperate for answers only to be told there was nothing wrong with me … when I was 20 pounds underweight, suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies, and in a great deal of pain. I had to figure it out for myself. If you're in the U.S., not having an official diagnosis does mean you can't claim a tax deduction for the extra expense of gluten-free foods. But it can also be a good thing. Pre-existing conditions might be a reason why a health insurance company might reject your application or charge you more money. No official diagnosis means you don't have a pre-existing condition. I really hope you don't live in the U.S. and don't have these challenges. Do you need an official diagnosis for a specific reason? Else, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're diligent in remaining gluten free, your body should be healing as much as possible so there isn't much else you could do anyway. And there are plenty of us out here who never got that official diagnosis because we couldn't eat enough gluten to get tested. Now that the IL-2 test is available, I suppose I could take it, but I don't feel the need. Someone else not believing me really isn't my problem as long as I can stay in control of my own food.

      If you're just starting out in being gluten free, I would expect it to take months before you learned enough about hidden sources of gluten before you stopped making major mistakes. Ice cream? Not safe unless they say it is gluten free. Spaghetti sauce? Not safe unless is says gluten-free. Natural ingredients? Who knows what's in there. You pretty much need to cook with whole ingredients yourself to avoid it completely. Most gluten-free products should be safe, but while you're in the hypersensitive phase right after going gluten free, you may notice that when something like a microwave meal seems to not be gluten-free … then you find out that it is produced in a shared facility where it can become contaminated. My reactions were much-more severe after going gluten free. The analogy that I use is that you had a whole army of soldiers waiting for some gluten to attack, and now that you took away their target, when the stragglers from the gluten army accidentally wander onto the battlefield, you still have your entire army going out and attacking them. Expect it to take two years before all of the training facilities that were producing your soldiers have fallen into disrepair and are no longer producing soldiers. But that is two years after you stop accidentally glutening yourself. Every time you do eat gluten, another training facility can be built and more soldiers will be waiting to attack. Good luck figuring things out.
