Ibs And Bacteria Overgrowth

This article talks about how bacterial overgrowth may account for some cases of IBS (not "IBS" as in I'm basically stumped but in IBS that persists despite a gluten-free diet or treatment for another gastro disorder. Remember when ulcers were caused by stress?

Bev,

I think alternative doctors have been aware of dysbiosis (too much bad bacteria...too little good bacteria) being the cause of gastro illness and other disease for quite some time now.

I think mainstream might finally be catching on. :o

I saw it on the news a couple weeks ago...they were talking about how they *think* that IBS may be caused by bacteria overgrowth.

I dont think alternative medicine uses the term "IBS" though...basically dysbiosis causes symptoms of disease.....whether its gastro related or otherwise.

I'm not too big a fan of mainstream medicine these days and I had to laugh at their lastest and greatest "discovery".

Dr. Mark Pimentel in CA has done some work on this. I think he is def onto something, but his studies have been flawed. However, it is an overlooked reason for IBS symptoms.

I have the book on it, in case anyone wants it. :) I was tested for it last year .... of course, negative.

laura- You tested negative? Ugh! have they figured anymore out about what's going on with you.

My test got moved up to this Tuesday and I'm hoping this is a piece of the puzzle.

happygirl Collaborator

Bev, I have been tested for EVERYTHING. :). multiple endos, colonoscopies, barium swallows, ultrasounds, HIDA gallbladder scan, celiac blood panel, gene tested, bloodwork out the wazoo, more urine and stool samples than I care to count, bacterial overgrowth, ... etc. Remember? I had the "best"---NIH and Johns Hopkins, after much of the above testing done in VB. ;)

I requested to have it done in September, before I moved. Everything except my Lyme and co-infections tests have been negative...hence, thats what I've been dx'ed with and now treating.

After my first visit with my new GI, he ordered blood, urine, & stool samples to find out what was wrong with me (and causing my chronic diarrhea). I then started taking XIFAXAN

Thanks so much for taking the time to post.

I have a bottle beside me..I am to take the double dose also....but....by the time I got in to the GI apt after waiting 3 1/2 months to get it.--the 'd' was gone!

The hydrogen breath test showed only a POINT above the norm for dx'ing it. I have no 'd' now since I went off diary and casein 7 weeks ago.

go figure.

did you have the test too?

Laura- I probably knew this but I amm so brain-dead right now! I'm sorry. I hope you weren't upset that I forgot! :(

Bev...no, not at all! It was said more "tongue in cheek" about the best care ;).

You have enough on your plate, no worries!

One of the first celiac experts I ever heard, Dr. Cynthia Rudert, said the top two reasons some people who have celiac don't get better is non-compliance with the diet and bacterial overgrowth.

I'm kind of cautiously excited--I'm going to see a new gastroenterologist in early April. She's younger, and over the phone said that she would talk to me about my additional food intolerances and continued, intermittant IBS-type symptoms.

My current gastro refuses to address this--saying I only need to stay away from gluten. <_< I was supposed to see him again in February, but I can't see going in and getting the same speil.

My allergist is more helpful, really, but with Bev and Judy as my inspiration :D , I'm going to go and see if there's anything else at play here.

Wish me luck....

Patti,

That is so wonderful. At the very least, its worth ruling things out. No need to suffer if there is help!

Patti- My appt. is on the 3rd too! I've decided that in the last two years, I've had no problem firing doctors!

I don't know if this will help any of you or not, but it's worth looking into....

When I was diagnosed with Celiac 1 1/2 yrs ago, my GI immediately handed me samples of a probiotic called Flora Q. He started me on 2 caps/day and then after a month reduced me to 1 (usual dose). He said that the "flora & fauna" of the intestinal tract gets unbalanced more often than most realize and results in a cycle of some very serious problems. He said that he recommends Flora Q to all of his Celiac patients and some others. (He said he's had better results from this than from other products.)

It works well for me! It's a little expensive. about $30 for 30 day supply, but it's so worth it to me! Truthfully, I don't remember to take it every day, but when I start to get that blegh "ibs" feeling, I start taking it again, and within 2-3 days I feel much better. I try to take it then at least for a couple of weeks straight.

Flora Q info:

Manufacturer - Kenwood Therapeutics

label information:

GLUTEN FREE

contains: lactobacillus, bifodobacterium, lactobacillus paracesei, streotococcus thermophilus

other ingredients: maltodextrin, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium alginate, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, FD&C blue 2

This product is free of the following allergens: milk, wheat gluten, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, soybean, tree nuts, and peanuts

Flora Q is an OTC, but I've never found it on the shelf with the other priobiotics in any pharmacy. I have to ask a pharmacist because it's always behind the counter eventhough it's an over-the-counter.

thanks so much for the post...sounds like a good product and a Dr. that knows what's UP!

CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR HOW BEV'S TEST WENT

What are your symptoms? What has brought you to the point where you sought celiac disease testing?

Thanks so much. This is what I thought but really wanted a second opinion. I appreciate this.

I have heard about numerous food sensitivity tests blood and the prick and how nothing is very reliable I think trial and error probably best bet.

As ShariW explained, soy itself doesn't contain gluten but most soy sauces sold in stores and used in restaurants contain wheat as an ingredient so they are not gluten free. As I understand it, there are two traditional ways of making soy sauce. One way contains wheat and one doesn't. The most popular one found out there in the wild does contain wheat, however. Kikkoman offers a line of gluten-free soy sauce and Teriyaki products that are often sold by grocery store chains like Safeway. There are food allergy/food sensitivity tests available and your physician can order them or give you a referral. They fall into two categories, the skin prick kind and the blood test kind. One you might look into is called the ALCAT test which might be the most helpful for foods. However, the reliability of these things is questionable. The results can be helpful as a place to start but the results often don't match up with real life experience. There are reasons for this and you might do well to research food sensitivity testing reliability on the Internet.

The IGA TTG (aka, TTG-IGA) is the centerpiece of celiac disease blood antibody testing. A high value in this test indicates probable celiac disease, though there are other reasons (some other diseases, some medications and in some cases, even some non-gluten foods) that can cause it to be elevated. And it is not unusual at all for other celiac antibody tests to be normal when the TTG-IGA is high. Normally, when the TTG-IGA is elevated, the physician will order an upper GI with biopsy of the small bowel lining to check for the damage characteristic of celiac disease. The biopsy is then sent out for microscopic analysis. This is to confirm the results of the blood testing and is considered the gold standard diagnostic test. You should not begin a gluten free diet until the endoscopy/biopsy is complete. This is very important because otherwise the results will be invalidated.  This article on celiac disease blood antibody tests might be helpful to you while you are waiting for feedback from the physician:
