Hello all

I think that I am slowly coming to the relization that I just might be lactose intolerant. Today after I ate my ceral it was gluten-free maple buckwheat flaks I had 2% milk with it. About an hour after I ate I started to get a little burpy with mild heartburn, that was about 4pm then about 5pm my stomach started to feel heavy and arms and legs felt tired as well. I did have the need to go poo but not anything too bad. so I just waited until i got to work. Now I am having a lot more heartburn. this is pretty much how I have felt after eating my cereal. Yes I did get some gluten last night but my reaction was not too bad. So I don't know if this is Lactose interalance symptoms or just from having some gluten last night. But this was a little more immediate than delayed.

Lactose intolerant symptoms are the same for me as the celiac symptoms! i am lactose intolerant, but I can drink about an 8oz glass a day(or equivalent of other dairy products) without problems...more than that and it's to the loo for me!

Doesn't sound like lactose intolerance to me.

My lactose reaction is gut wrenching pain, cramping and bloating followed by the sudden need to run to the bathroom. More often than not, as soon as I "sit down," the need (and pain) stops, without any "progress". As soon as I leave the bathroom, the need strikes again. I liken the feeling in my gut to a brick slowly moving through my intenstines.

I've tested my reactions, and have found that I tolerate higher fat dairy products very well. Ice cream is fine, but ice milk (eg DQ) causes immediate problems. The lower fat the milk is, the more sudden the reaction. I also tolerate yogurt and cheeses quite well. Seems my tolerance has improved a bit since going gluten free too.

It could be lactose, or it could be casien Intolerance. I have a casien intolerance becasue even when I only drink lactaid milk I still got gas and very crappy overall feeling.

I'd suggest going a day with no dairy, then getting some lactose milk, and drinking that without any other Dairy at all the next day.

If your sick it's Casien if your ok, try the regular milk the next day, if your still ok, it was a fluke, if your sick it's lactose.

OK thanks I was just wondering, I only get that way after eating any cereal with Milk, I don't think that I had the same reaction with Soy Milk, I did kinda like the Soy milk. I guess that I'm gonna have to try elinination with Milk, well I don't know because I may only drink milk maybe 2 to 4 time a week if that.

But I will have gone days maybe 2 or 3 that I won't have any milk or cheese, but my cheese is Lactose/Gluten free and I am fine with that, which I'll eat with gluten-free bread and gluten-free lunch meat. And what is the differance between casien and latose intolerance

With casein intolerance, your body cannot tolerate the milk protein. With lactose intolerance, your body is not producing any/enough lactase enzyme to break down milk sugar (lactose) so it passes through the system undigested. Healing of the intestinal walls can help the body with regaining the ability to produce this enzyme, so celiacs who are gluten free may regain the ability to digest lactose.

I've been trying to do some research on these, but I'm not finding an answer. Are there tests for casein intolerance or lactose intolerance? Should celiacs maybe get these?

thanks.

there is a casein intolerance test threw enterolab, and your dr can test for lactose intolerance threw a breathe test or other ways(im not sure on the ways)

I tested postive threw enterolab test, but i have known for a long time that i cant have milk, for yrs sour cream, whole milk and ice cream killed my stomach. I get severe reactions, real bad anxiety and hot flashes and really bad cramping.

Ok can I assume that if I drink Soy milk and not get the same reaction from that as I do with regular milk that is it possible that I have a mild lactose intolerance going on. Not a single reaction that I can tell from the soy milk, at least not immediate.

I tested negative for Casein with enterolab, but had convinced myself I was Lactose intolerant. Over the last few days, I didn't have hardly any dairy (not really intentional, but I was on a trip). I felt pretty damn good.

This morning a poured a bowl a cereal, and my lactaid milk. 10 minutes later I had to go to the bathroom. and it wasn't pretty.

I'm really, really upset. I'm not sure yet, but it certainly points to me needing to experiment more.

Hi geoff

I did try a carton of soy milk and I did not like the results, I finished that carton and then I bought Lactaid milk 1% i didnt mean to buy the 1% but it was good enough and I have not had the same reaction as I have with the regular milk, what a relief, still battleling with the possiblilty of the DH on my hand.

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system
