A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread

Hello Everyone,

I think this thread is a great idea! It's nice to have a support group. I'll tell you a little about me and some of my goals and then go back and read more of this thread (I only got to page 7 so far).

I'm 43, have 2 children a boy age 7 and a girl age 9. I was diagnosed with celiac August 1st and went gluten free the same day since I knew this is what I had due to positive blood tests. Anyway, I've been trying to lose about 15 lbs for a couple years and no matter what I did pre-gluten free it would not come off. Since August 1st, I have lost 4 lbs. and I notice my belly is shrinking. I jog 3 miles at least 5X a week and plan on adding weights and yoga back in my routine. I had to stop those back in January because i was feeling too fatigued to keep up with it all. My goal is to lose 10 lbs. and eat healthy everyday and plan on exercising everyday (even though it won't happen).

Good luck to everyone!

Do we post what we eat, our exercise for the day and post our weight in on fridays?

Hi Donna and "Bellyfat" and "Lonewolf"

DONNA:What do you do at the hospital? I am in nursing school and I work 12 hour shifts at a hospital too, and will probably be on midnights myself soon, when I graduate. For now I am a contingent nurse tech. I have read so many people do the gluten free thing even though they have no diagnosis for celiac and just continue with it because they feel so much better. And since there are so many misdiagnosed celiac's out there, it seems like if the diet works well for your body, then that is just what you need to do, with or without a diagnosis! I have also read that people can be gluten sensitive without acctually having celiac, so if that is you, I wonder if that is why they don't have a positive diagnosis for you. Gluten free is so so hard, especially when I don't have the horrible symptoms to go along with it that some do. Constipation is an issue for me, as well as some gas / bloating, and I have not done the diet long enough to say for sure but I do think those issues are lessening, and I look forward to that continuing to get better. I am also very very tired all the time due to the iron deficiency anemia, which I believe is also an issue that should resolve on a gluten free diet after some weeks or months, since it is most likely caused by the celiac too. I have always been tired, lethargic, unmotivated, and just feeling kinda crappy my whole life that I can remember, so I hope to be seeing some improvements from all of that! And hopefully lose some weight in the mean time. Yeah I have the cafeteria issue as well, there is virtually nothing gluten free to eat there, unless I find some select junk food out of the vending machine. It's so hard cause I am not used to packing a lunch or planning my meals at all! Sadly - you may want to double check on the wontons, I do believe those are made with that infamous wheat flour. Beth :(

BELLYFAT: sounds like you are in the same time frame as me, with this whole celiac thing. I'm so glad we don't have to go through this alone! Sounds like you have a great routine going for exercise, I'm impressed! I am terrible at self discipline, but I have to get over it and get moving. I have several work out videos I want to start doing and an exercise ball and some hand weights, I just need to get to it! Sounds like I will be having children about the same time you did as well, if all goes as planned : ) I am 30, no kids, been married for 7 years, and want to finish nursing school and then start trying to have a baby. Hopefully I will have this celiac thing totally controlled by then. Beth :blink::wacko:

LONEWOLF: Thanks for the welcome! Looking forward to it! Beth B):)

Hi Beth

I work on the post pardom floor in the newborn nursery with the healthy kids and the newborns who are not sick enough for the NICU, these kids just need some extra care, like blood suger issues, infections that need IV meds, or just little we get the 34 weekers under 1900 grams, drug babies that sort of issues.

I also had an issue with constipation all my life it was really bad as a kid, and the older I got the other symptoms reared its ugly head, my daughter if mirroring me as far as constipation is concerned. I was also not too motivated eighter, lake of energy, tired all the time, but fortuneately she is not lacking in energy always wants to play, talk, and sing so that is not a problem.

Yes the diet is working for me, I did not eat gluten free last weekend and at work all week and I did eat gluten free at home but did not take the time to make my lunch. Yah the Wonton soup was not a good Idea, I was miserable at work all night, I was so tired even though It was my second night, working Sat, Sun, and Monday off tuesday and working Wednesday and off until next Tuesday and I am ready. But anyway I was tired all week not motivated, it was so hard for me to get motivated, I do admit that I needed to go shopping for my food which I did this morning after work and I had gluten-free before I can to work and I have more energy tonight than I did last night, Part of my problem may have been that I was just tired but after eating my Chinese did not help.

But I do enjoy working with the babies, sometimes not when at 2am I have the same baby who does not want to settle down. I do enjoy the excitment of getting a baby that I have just something to like vitals and hear a murmur, I tell my RN that I hear something on this baby that needs attention, or if the infant is getting to the point where it needs some intervention, my nurses are great, I love to see them working with the baby to get everything ok. I am just a Tech I can't do the cool things that the nurses can.

What field of nursing do you want to do?

My meals since last night

Monday

Up at 2pm

Coffee

D- 1/2 amy's Rice crust pizza with, Ham, onion, and Bell Pepper

I posted on here a while ago. I have a question. What do yo do when you have such severe cravings? I eat plenty or protein, but cereal, etc. is killing me!!! I don't have a lot of weight to lose, but enough that my clothes are a little too tight for my comfort. Example, tonight I had salmon with pasta and spinach, but an hour later I was dying for some food...specifically the banana quinoa muffins I made today! Also, I am on the pill so I think that may have something to do with it?

Kassandra

Thanks for any advice!

Beth41777 Rookie

Kassondra: I have not figured out the cure to cravings yet, that is for sure! I have been eating so much junk food lately, and not exercising, so needless to say I have some work to do. I have heard people say if you distract yourself for like 10 minutes by going and doing something else that the craving will pass but I don't know if that really works or not... can't say I have ever acctually tried it. I guess in the long run it is just about building self discipline and having control over your own body! : ) Don't starve yourself either... are you having a craving for junk or are you really hungry? I always feel hungry and find if I eat several small meals throughout the day that helps. I also do find that my cravings are usually when I am sitting at home. (I like to eat when I am "bored" or studying... if I am up and around and distracted I don't eat so much junk.) Maybe that goes with the theory of distracting yourself by doing something for 10 minutes, I don't know. : )

So today I have eaten a couple eggs with toast (gluten free bread of course), a handful of raw almonds, drank lots of water and had some corn chips with salsa for a snack. Now I have to figure out what to pack for lunch to bring to the hospital for my nursing clinical... I am there for 7 hours, so I need to be prepared, otherwise I will find myself at the vending machine!) Oh and I worked out for 20 minutes plus 10 minutes of streching so I am feeling pretty good and proud!

Donna: Not sure what field of nursing yet, I worked for years as an aide in a nursing home and with hospice, and now I am on a medical telemetry floor. Maybe I will end up as a hospice nurse or in the ICU or who knows... : )

Do you know your metabolic type? Eating according to your metabolic type can help with cravings and keeping your blood sugar in check (and all sorts of different things). People are either protein types, carb types or mixed types. I took a pretty lenghty test to determine that I'm a mixed type, and eating that way really does help me. There's a book about it called "The Metabolic Typing Diet." Might be worth checking out.

Thanks for the warm welcome all!

Hey Beth, it does sound like we're on the same track. Good for you going to nursing school. You have plenty of time for children after that. They are a lot of fun! My life totally revolves around them now. I'm a soccer coach, girl scout leader, go to all school trips and parties, etc.

Sounds like you have a ton of good exercise resources at home. Maybe you could try and plan out some kind of workout schedule with your favorite tapes. For me, I like to mix it up. It takes some time to plan for the week ahead, but it makes the week of exercise more fun and interesting. I did a power yoga tape this morning. It was nice since I've only been doing the jogging since I got sick earlier this year. I'm going to add weights back in a couple weeks, maybe. I see my GI doctor tonight and want to see about getting tested for vitamin deficiencies because I am still so tired most of the time.

little d, I admire you and what you do in your job. I'm sure it's hard sometimes, but there must also be some very rewarding days.

Kassandra, I always gained weight when on birth control pills. I think the cravings might be part of that. Also do you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. I know when I don't eat the way I should my body also tends to crave sugary foods.

Mango04 - I read something a while back about eating for your blood type, but wasn't sure how much to believe it. What kind of tests do you go through to figure out your metabolic type? It sounds very interesting.

I'm not posting what I ate because I haven't been tracking it yet. I'll try to do it for tomorrow. I haven't done too bad, but did eat 2 Reese's cups yesterday!

Yeah, I don't buy the blood type thing either. Metabolic typing is actually a bit different than the blood type diet. Here's a link to the amazon page w/ more info about the book, or there are some shorter tests you can take online to get a better idea of what it's about. Something to try, anyway B)

edit: oops..I forgot amazon links don't usually work here...sorry

Hi everyone--and welcome to our new participants :)

I haven't checked in lately, because, frankly, I haven't been doing well with my diet.

I don't know what this is all about, but I have perfect willpower when it comes to the gluten-free diet and all of my food intolerances.

But, when it comes to portion control, or sugar consumption, I seem to have no will power at all lately :(

You all are doing so well...I hope some of it will rub off on me :D

I can totally relate! I have no problem being free of all these foods, but portion control and SUGAR!!!!!! All I want is SUGAR!! It's just so good. Lol. But it's not good for the figure. I guess I'll just keep trying.

Jerseyangel, that is so true, I have perfect willpower when it comes to gluten-free!!! But give me chocolate or gluten-free yummies and all that will power goes out the window. Even if they make me sick, "as in I ate too much" I am still a sucker for them.

Do we do this to ourselves because we feel deprived in one way, so we make up for it by eating what we can, to compensate for what we can't eat? Feeling sorry for ourselves? For me, I don't think so, as I have always been a gluton for yummy food. Reminds me, I saw some "gluten free sausages" at our local butcher called "gluton free sausages." That was enough to put me off them!

I have been doing quite good. The weight is still slowly and surely leaving. Nearly hitting 12 stone. I don't seem to have as many cravings. I have been meticuously writing down all I eat, and round it up at the end of the week, that way I have to eat pretty good all week as I will be accountable. I notice the weeks I don't exercise the less I loose.

I am still taking on Stef's suggestion of 300 cals per meal. It is not hard. The hardest bit is at work. Our breaks are 11am and again at 12.50pm. Not the three hours that are required. So I am having breakfast, another feed at 11am, then at 2pm I sneak a meal in my office, then again about 6pm I will have tea. All meals about 300. I'm not as hungry, and I consiously wait the three hours, and then all I have to worry about is 300 calories. Maybe this will be the way to wean myself out of my food diary. I feel I am becoming a little eccentric! I have for the last three years written down nealry every morsel that has passed my lips. Firstly because I was dieting, then because I had to watch out for reactions to gluten contamination and now it is a habit, a bit of a security blanket to say I am not doing too bad.

got to go, good to see all the new people on.

Hi everyone. I went back to work this week and haven't had a chance to get on here. I've been doing really well with my eating. Lots of fruits and veggies and lean meats. Daughters and I are doing a "challenge" for 10 days to see who can stick perfectly to no sugar, no chips, only 3 grain-based carb servings a day, only 4 fruits and limited fats. So far, so good. We'll see what the scale says on Friday. I'm in a rush so can't even think about writing down what exactly I've eaten.

Joni63 Collaborator

Hello!

Sounds like your doing really well. The challenge sounds like a great plan to lose weight! Good luck to you and your duaghers.

Hmm I haven't posted my meals in a while. Maybe I should do that. Up until yesterday I've been really bad - to the point where I don't really remember what I've eaten (though I do recall an entire bag of Whole Foods veggie chips two days ago ). So yeah, let's start with yesterday LOL

Yesterday:

Breakfast - Jay Robbs egg white protein with rice milk and a bananna

Lunch - brown rice with corn, tomato, green onion, chicken a bit of olive oil and sea salt

Snack - a couple Enjoy Life apple cinnamon bars and a grapefruit

Dinner - avocado, tomato, cucumber, green onion and olive oil

Today:

Breakfast - a peach and a bit of cranberry harvest trail mix

Lunch - brown rice with tomato, avocado, garlic and sesame oil (basically mixed together the few things I could find in my fridge this morning)

I need to find more food (particularly protein) to prevent myself from binging on carbs when I get home from work. We'll see how it goes :)

lonewolf Collaborator

I've had 5 good days in a row now. I think I remember what I ate today.

B - several bites of a smoked turkey drumstick

L - grilled "fake cheese" sandwich, banana, tomato

S - cherry pie Lara Bar

D - taco salad: lettuce, gr. turkey, guacamole, salsa and a corn tortilla

S - 1/2 C pistachios

No exercise yet, but hoping to go for a walk right before bed. Too busy to make it to the gym.

KathleenAUS Newbie

Hello again,

it is Friday night in Australia so I am being accountable and reporting that there has been no change in my weight this week... at least it didn't go up I suppose..

I've had a bit of a low week this week; I just feel as though everything is working against me and my attempt to shed this weight! I am doing a phd so I am constantly sitting at a computer.. I broke my exercise bike... my partner made a carrot cake tonight... plus today was so hot (even though it is the last day of winter here) that I had to pull out clothes that to my horror don't fit anymore... WHINGE WHINGE WHINGE...

Right, back on the horse and all that... So I am not going to post until a fortnight from today... the Friday after next; and I am determined to post a loss.

On the upside having looked at what some of you eat I am very pleased I live in Australia; we don't have half the gluten-free goodies and temptations that it sounds like you guys have in the states.. In an average supermarket there would be one shelf or two dedicated to gluten-free stuff; like one brand of flour; two brands of biscuits (which taste like arse anyway).

By the way I noticed trawling through the posts that a few of you have said to steer clear of diet fizzy drink (what you call soda) if trying to lose weight, would the rest of you concur? Also I am beginning to wonder if I am dairy intolerant too now.. I wonder how many of you are hit with the coeliac stick + the dairy one too??

My biggest weakness at the moment is a total uncontrollable obsession with Indian food... curries, rice, papadums... can't get enough of the stuff.. Plus I am also having difficulty with alcohol; I am quite partial to one drink a night (I never have more than just one).. not sure if this makes a difference to my weight??

Well I have vented my spleen for the week... Perhaps we should create a coeliac-fatties commune so that we can all go there and eat and drink and be merry and not give a damn what non-coaeliacs think, cause they don't understand anyway...

:) Kathleen

I'll be there!

Not posting but reading. I've discovered that I can't eat anything but fish and veggies at night if I want to sleep and have been too busy at work to explore other options.

Lost the two pounds I gained after coming back from vacation and lost 4 more as well. Not happy and cheerful about it, but hungry and grumpy and really tired of fish. Takes all the fun out of it when you can't cheat.

Actually, you definitely do LOL. I won't elaborate on that though since this is the weight loss thread LOL :P

So...today:

B - young coconut (I had fun chopping it open at 6:30 this morning LOL) and a handful of almonds

L - garbanzo beans, pistachios and herb salad mix with sesame oil and sea salt (random, I know)

S - some more almonds and and a couple of those Trader Joe's fruit leather type things

Kaycee Collaborator

Kathleen, your supermarkets sound like ours in nz, you really have to troll the ailses to find what you want, and usually what is in the miniscule gluten-free section is food I wouldn't want to touch, (apart from Marcels gluten free crepes), all the other foods and breads seem to be full of preservatives etc etc.

I'm on a high here, I started the week Monday at 77 kilos, and today, Saturday, I am nearly 75! (12st (168lbs)) Wonderful. I am very nearly lighter than my husband. He finds it easy to go up and down. A couple of years ago I was lighter, but he has lost weight since, but he is putting it back on.

I can't remember the last time I was this weight, but it seems to be a downward trend, let it continue.

I would write what I ate yesterday, but I have left my journal at work! I will have to cope for two days without it! It's like not having your friend around.

Cathy

KathleenAUS Newbie

I'll be your friend Kaycee! I'm 77kgs at the moment... hoping to get down to 65 eventually (I was there last year before being diagnosed with coeliac disease) good for you for losing some weight :) My mini-goal is to be lighter than my partner too; so it sounds like we are in the same boat.

I went for a really big walk this morning and got up a big sweat.. I had to take a stick with me because it is magpie season already here and they are crazy, so I looked like a bit of a knob but who cares?

Still not weighing until the Friday after next though - I get too disheartned if I get on the scale and don't see a loss.

Kathleen.

lonewolf Collaborator

I weighed in today at 162-1/2. Still have a long way to go, but at least I'm down a pound since last week.

I'll be too busy to post for several days. Tomorrow I'll be doing some cooking and freezing meals for my busy fall and then we're going to the beach on Sunday and Monday. School starts on Tuesday and I'll be back in the grind - working, carpooling, running to sports practices and games...

Have a great weekend everyone!

I have osteopenia and have cracked three vertebrae.  Niacin is connected to osteoporosis! Do talk to your nutritionist and doctor about supplementing with B vitamins.  Blood tests don't reveal the amount of vitamins stored inside cells.  The blood is a transportation system and can reflect vitamins absorbed from food eaten in the previous twenty-four to forty-eight hours.  Those "normal limits" are based on minimum amounts required to prevent disease, not levels for optimal health.   Keep us posted on your progress.   B Vitamins: Functions and Uses in Medicine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9662251/ Association of dietary niacin intake with osteoporosis in the postmenopausal women in the US: NHANES 2007–2018 https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11835798/ Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/   Nutritional Imbalances in Adult Celiac Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8398893/ Nutritional Consequences of Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free Diet https://www.mdpi.com/2036-7422/15/4/61 Simplifying the B Complex: How Vitamins B6 and B9 Modulate One Carbon Metabolism in Cancer and Beyond https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9609401/

Thank you so much for the clarification! Yes to these questions: Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, or vitamins? I’m within healthy range for nutritional tests, thyroid and am not anemic. I do have osteopenia. I don’t take any medications, and the dietician was actually a nutritionist (not sure if that is the same thing) recommended by my physician at the time to better understand gluten free eating.    I almost wish the gluten exposure had triggered something, so at least I’d know what’s going on. So confusing!    Many thanks!

@JudyLou,  I have dermatitis herpetiformis, too!  And...big drum roll... Niacin improves dermatitis herpetiformis!   Niacin is very important to skin health and intestinal health.   You're correct.  dermatitis herpetiformis usually occurs on extensor muscles, but dermatitis herpetiformis is also pressure sensitive, so blisters can form where clothing puts pressure on the skin. Elastic waist bands, bulky seams on clothing, watch bands, hats.  Rolled up sleeves or my purse hanging on my arm would make me break out on the insides of my elbows.  I have had a blister on my finger where my pen rested as I write.  Foods high in Iodine can cause an outbreak and exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. You've been on the gluten free diet for a long time.  Our gluten free diet can be low in vitamins and minerals, especially if processed gluten free foods are consumed.  Those aren't fortified with vitamins like gluten containing products are.  Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, medicine, or vitamins? Niacin deficiency is connected to anemia.  Anemia can cause false negatives on tTg IgA tests.  A person can be on that borderline where symptoms wax and wane for years, surviving, but not thriving.  We have a higher metabolic need for more nutrients when we're sick or emotionally stressed which can deplete the small amount of vitamins we can store in our bodies and symptoms reappear.   Exposure to gluten (and casein in those sensitive to it) can cause an increased immune response and inflammation for months afterwards. The immune cells that make tTg IgA antibodies which are triggered today are going to live for about two years. During that time, inflammation is heightened.  Those immune cells only replicate when triggered.  If those immune cells don't get triggered again for about two years, they die without leaving any descendents programmed to trigger on gluten and casein.  The immune system forgets gluten and casein need to be attacked.  The Celiac genes turn off.  This is remission.    Some people in remission report being able to consume gluten again without consequence.   However, another triggering event can turn the Celiac genes on again.   Celiac genes are turned on by a triggering event (physical or emotional stress).  There's some evidence that thiamine insufficiency contributes to the turning on of autoimmune genes.  There is an increased biological need for thiamine when we are physically or emotionally stressed.  Thiamine cannot be stored for more than twenty-one days and may be depleted in as little as three during physical and emotional stresses. Mitochondria without sufficient thiamine become damaged and don't function properly.  This gets relayed to the genes and autoimmune disease genes turn on.  Thiamine and other B vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are needed to replace the dysfunctional mitochondria and repair the damage to the body.   I recommend getting checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  More than just Vitamin D and B12.  A gluten challenge would definitely be a stressor capable of precipitating further vitamin deficiencies and health consequences.   Best wishes!

And I agree with Wheatwacked. When a physician tells you that you can't have celiac disease because you're not losing weight, you can be certain that doctor is operating on a dated understanding of celiac disease. I assume you are in the UK by the way you spelled "coeliac". So, I'm not sure what your options are when it comes to healthcare, but I might suggest you look for another physician who is more up to date in this area and is willing to work with you to get an accurate diagnosis. If, in fact, you do not have celiac disease but you know that gluten causes you problems, you might have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). There is no test available yet for NCGS. Celiac must first be ruled out. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that damages the lining of the small bowel. NCGS we is not autoimmune and we know less about it's true nature. But we do know it is considerably more common than celiac disease.
