For Those That Eat The gluten-free Oats

I seem to be able to tolerate the gluten-free oats quite well. I don't eat them often because of the expense, and I haven't wanted to test how much I can tolerate.

For those of you that have tried the gluten-free oats, how much are you eating per day? Do you find that you can eat them up to a point, but not past? I think the last thing I read was that one should not go over 1/2 cup daily. Well, if I make a batch of cookies and eat a few, I could easily go over that amount. I would also like to increase my consumption to try to decrease my cholesterol.

Input is apprecited.

i think you ought to test the waters a bit. i seem ok eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning (did that for awhile when i ran out of grocery money last month, and had no more cereals). i'd just be aware of how much you're consuming, and watching to see how it affects you. i'd also keep a couple different kinds of cookies on hand, so you're not just eating oatmeal ones :D

I love your quote "The grass is always greener where you water it." I think I may have to steal it for my own personal list of favorites- BECAUSE ITS SO TRUE! ;)

A go by the guidelines. I usually take the amount of oats in a recipie and divide by the number of servings I end up with to determine how many servings of a product I can eat in a day and it is normally more than I plan to eat so I don't find that I have to eat less of a product than I normally would. For example my muffin recipie uses 1 c. of oats and makes 12-16 muffins. I'd have to eat almost 1/2 of them in a day to go over the limit and I only want 1 or 2. Apple crisp uses 1 cup and I divide it into about 6 generous servings. One serving is only 1/6 a cup.

What brand of oats are you guys buying? My doc gave a tentative OK for oats at our house (son likes oatmeal once in a while and it would be nice to have it for oatmeal cookies). However, he said even some of the "gluten free" brands have still shown to be contaminated and he wants me to do my research and get the brand that has the best reputation. So here I am at my favorite site doing "research" Any opinions on which brand is best?

I eat the oats from glutenfreeoats.com, and have never had any problems. I eat about two to three servings a week, about 2/3 cup each time, with raisins, almonds, fructose, and a little milk....everything's fine!

I eat oats about three times a week. (gluten-free). I do make cookies & desserts from them too. I only have two cookies at a time or a 2 inch bar type dessert.

I eat cream hill estate oats ( Lara's) or from the gluten-free oats co. I don't eat Bob's Red Mill anything as I seem to react to most of their stuff....That one would be the only one I'd be leary of. I think there are others who react to Bob's stuff also.

Only oats has quick oats & I think they are the only ones who has quick oats.

Thanks! That quote saved my marriage :) ...and continues to do so!

I love Lara's oats! I've gone through several boxes since dx. They also have recipes for cookies and such in the box. Was buying the irish ones...can't remember what they're called, but Lara's are cheaper!

My husband just had shingles going on 7 weeks now. We had been putting Vaseline on the blisters and lidocaine cream and he was prescribed an antiviral.  Also he still has the nerve pain it was bad and is getting better it is his upper left torso. His dr prescribed gabapentin 300mg 3x a day and he's also taking naproxen 500ng 2x a day and tylenol 1000mg every 6 hrs. Hope this helps  The lidocaine cream is by tylenol and is available in a large tube on Amazon or at Walmart

What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.
