Desperate For Advice

Hi Everyone,

I'm newly diagnosed and have some questions. The main symptoms I have are neurological. Mostly what I experience is immense fatigue to the point where I need to be in bed most of the day. I have burning sensations and just muscle pain when I exert myself. My tongue even hurts at times. My doctor says that I am experiencing this because of the malabsorption. Do any of you here experience this sort of pain? Do you think that there is something else going on? I'm on a really strict diet that is obviously gluten free but also surgar, dairy and casin free. It's basically a diet for leaky gut. If this is just celiac disease, how long before I start getting better? My dr. also put me on the medication Lyrica to help me deal with the pain. I think it' helping some, but not much. I'm just so sad that I've lost my live. I have three young children and I really miss them. I can't even care for them anymore. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

CarolynV

Hi! Welcome to the Boards!!! This is a great place to ask any questions or vent or whatever!

I had pretty severe exhaustion, too. I could still work, but after I got home at 2 pm, it was over from there. It took me a while to get over that, although I felt much better pretty quickly going gluten-free. You have only temporarily been set back, things will get better for you. Did your doctor also test you for any vitamin deficiencies? I started taking a regular multi, magnesium, and a good B complex. That seems to be what has made the final difference. But, I am still not back to my full energy yet. It took time for me to get this way, and it will take time to fix it. But I know that I feel so much better than I did 3 months ago, and it just keeps getting better. I don't know how long you have been gluten-free, but just give it some time. Things will start to look up!! ;)

I have neurological issues also. Mine are mainly bad sciatica, seizures, numbness in my right leg and foot. I also have nerve pain that seems to send them on heightened alert when Im having "D". I also use to get burning in my back from physical exertion. I am much better now, Im around 2 1/2 years gluten-free. I found I had many intolerances and leaky gut I believe. What helped me best was being gluten-free, soy free, and I couldnt handle fats at all. I had to go vegetarian and avoid nuts and oils too. Now I still cant eat soy, eggs, gluten and dairy but the other issues have subsided. Im still a vegetarian but I have tested meat and it doesnt bother me anymore at all I just choose to avoid it now. Probiotics I believe helped me alot too, I hope you get some relief soon.

Carolyn,

My symptoms don't fit exactly with what you are describing, but I am absolutely certain that there are others on this board that can empathize with you. My own experience involves other kinds of pain that, despite being different in how they manifest themselves, are still symptoms of the same thing and have often left me wondering if they will ever leave.

I want you to know that a gluten free diet has proven beneficial for many, many people - and sometimes it is simply a matter of time, in finally getting that relief you so need. I want you to know that I have personally felt a lot of relief simply from eliminating soy and dairy from my diet. You are on the right track!!!!!!!!!! Please try to concentrate on the idea that you are working towards healing yourself; it may be difficult to see/remember that at times, but with every day you remain gluten free, I can tell you that you are taking a step forward.

In the meantime, please remember to use this board to vent/seek advice/comfort in the knowledge that there are so many people who are going through something similar to you.

*hugs*

I second the magnesium suggestion. I also had intense, debilitating muscle aches and pains, and magnesium was like a miracle.

Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better

@Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."

As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.
