Dreaded Nightshades, Should I Avoid All?

So I posted a topic a few days ago about my aweful weekend literally on the toilet and in front of the toilet. I had what was said to be gluten free at 2 seperate quick food places and after eating from Winger's (potato skins, chicken, fries, and veggies) I immediately got a severe migraine. I literally was throwing up for hours and was sick for 2.5 days straight. I felt like I could die or pass out. I'm pregnant and I should have gone to the ER, but I'm too stubborn at times! Anyway, I have been researching a lot about Nightshades. It really was after I at the potato skins that almost immediately my migraine came on. So, here's what I feel pretty confident about; I am pretty sure I can no longer have potatoes. My "food poisoning" -like symptoms were posted on many other forums when others had potatoes. So, what my question is is just this:

Do you think that it could just be potatoes and not all nightshades? I am really afraid to test anything right now. I was far too sick this weekend to even take care of my daughter and I don't want a repeat. But have any of you experienced only symptoms to potatoes? Is potato starch just as bad? How do I find gluten free breads and such without potato starch? Please help. I am really feeling depressed. Tomatoes are my favorite food and I love everything spicy with serano peppers!! And I'm obsessed with Pamela's pancakes, but they have potato starch.

Have you tried potatoes at home, that are 100% safe? I wonder if its not potatoes/nightshades, but cross-contamination (gluten) at the fast food places.

Whenever you are re-introducing one of these items that you are concerned about, make sure you are eating at home and you are sure that it is gluten free. Only then can you determine if its gluten or another food intolerance.

My goodness, I'm sorry you were so sick!

Before you consider that potatoes are a problem, I would look more closely at the food from the fast food places. As regards cross contamination issues--did the server use clean utensils?, do they fry anything that contains gluten in the oil used to cook your foods?, if they used gloves, did they change them before handling your order?

Fast food restaurants are notorious for cross contamination....I would suggest eating at home for a while and focusing on whole foods--not packaged--until you feel better.

If you need to be out somewhere or at work, make your lunch at home and bring it with you--it's more of a hassle, but much safer.

Hope you feel better soon--once you are doing better, you can test foods like potatoes if you still think they could be a problem for you. Add one questionable food at a time with several days in between so you can get a good idea of how they affect you.

I agree.

Also, potatoes are often treated with sulfites (not fresh potatoes). A person who is sensitive can react to sulfites in the way that you described. If you try a plain fresh baked potato at home then you can figure out if it was the potato or something else.

I just posted on another thread that for me it seems to be tomatoes and green peppers only, although I have not yet challenged myself with eggplant. Potatoes don't seem to bother me, but I haven't tried eating them out, and red peppers are okay--after all, green peppers are just unripe red peppers. :P

I am nightshade free and have been for about a month. Potatoes have definately had a neurological effect on me for years. 10 years ago, I would wake in the night feeling "weird". Disoriented for a few seconds. A strange taste in my mouth. It would pass and and then I would go back to sleep. This went on for months, before I figured out that it only happened when I ate potatoes. No potatoes....no "seizures". I realized that they were in fact "seizures" when I did some research. But as years went by, I slowly added some back into my diet and before I knew it, I would wake up with numb hands. Once again, it could be traced to the potatoes.

So no potatoes.

And I've cut ALL nightshades because they ALL contain neurotoxins. Google it. Since the majority of my symptoms are neuro, I am leaving no stone unturned. Just found a nightshade free pasta sauce. I am hopeful. :) I do miss tomatoes the most of all of them.

I not only miss tomatoes, I mourn their loss :lol: Who makes the nightshade free pasta sauce?

It's called "Nomato" and I found it in the gluten free mall advertised all over the sides of this forum. :) I will warn you that the color is something to behold A very bright red. Much brighter than regular tomato sauce, but it is pretty good. My family really liked it and they will be honest. In fact, I made a homemade salad dressing the other night and my daughter said, "Sorry Mom. This tastes like dirty gym socks." How would she know that?......LOL

I live off of peppers and tomatoes, but potatoes do me in. I think you can react to one member of a family and not others.

Potatoes seem to be the worst offenders. Some day I might add back small amounts of tomatoes and peppers and see. After I have healed.

      Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again
