Sleep Number Bed = Toxic Mold

How does moisture get in.....We sweat A LOT at night. More than you might think....

Me and my hubby solved our bedding issue by buying 2 twin extra longs. We each picked out the bed we wanted. I like a firm and he likes a soft. We each got what we wanted. They are pushed together with rubber disks to keep them in place. The dont move unless we really work it. We each have our own bedding as well because one of us steals all of the covers....wraps up like a sardine he does. The covers match exactly, so when the beds are made it looks perfectly nice.

Here's the mattress we bought. Open Original Shared Link Nora, it's exactly as you describe .... and we were told Europeans use this type of mattress, so I'm glad to hear that's true, LOL. It is the most comfortable bed I've ever been on.

This company makes sure the bed has ventilation. That is what the mold guy had told me at the party a couple months ago ... that old houses aren't sealed that well. I talked to him yesterday and he said the mold could be a problem, or getting the source out could be adequate.

Mold is everywhere. He said when he tests, he tests outside, in the room in question, and in another room so he can compare the mold contents of the various places. It's $400 for the testing. He said he'd gauge it by my health. If I don't get better by getting rid of the mattress then have it tested.

I remember talking to him about mold at that party because I knew my symptoms could be mold-related, but I didn't think they were the house because I moved two and a half years ago. So, I started getting sick at our old house, not here. Never thought of the bed!

I'm going to try airing the room out, it's not too hot today. I can stay in the air conditioned downstairs when I open up the upstairs. He said wiping things down just spreads it, so no sense in trying that. He said the next step after testing would be vacuuming it (walls, everything) with a hippa (sp?) vacuum. That's how they get the mold out.

My doctor is sending me a script for mold testing on ME!

The bed might get delivered today. I got the new pillows on the website .... I did breathe better just like they say.

If you have a Sleep Number Bed or Select Comfort Bed be sure you unzip it all the way and look at the entire air bag. If you just lift a corner you will not see the mold. If you go to the pictures at the website I posted on post #1 you will see pictures of what the mold looks like.

The guy at the place where I bought my new bed said that we all sweat out a pint each night!!! That's where the moisture comes from.

The man I know who does mold remediation said that there are mold spores everywhere, so that's where the spores come from.

Tonight is my first night on my new bed. Aside from the thread, the whole bed is toxin free! The gov. makes them use a certain type of thread. I'm excited as it was very comfortable .... my 20 year old daughter slept on one in the store for 1 1/2 hours! :lol:

Did the dr say what test they would be doing for the mold testing on YOU.

MAN THE HOUSE AND YOU.......... WOULDN'T THIS BE WONDERFUL IF YOU SAW AMAZING RESULTS JUST GETTING THIS MATTRESS OUT OF THE HOUSE!

I need to go over to hubby's office to see what the mold test is, I'll try to remember to let you know. It's a blood test at a normal lab.

I have not had "air hunger" (sort of like being short of breath) all day today ... this is remarkable. So far, so good. I did some major cleaning with a HEPA vacuum .... if this doesn't do the trick, I'll have to have it tested and have the cleaning done by a pro .... but I'm thinking that the mold was pretty well contained ... I zipped it right back up and hubby just trusted me it was there and didn't look till he got the mattress to the garage.

Yeah, for sure, but this has got to make a huge difference. It's so lucky you found out--I shudder to think of you trying to get well with that mold right there where you sleep. Just sickening.

What's sickening is that they didn't recall the beds!!!! Ugh!

Wow...for the past few years I've been tempted to purchase one of these beds.

As to fungicide, if I am not mistaken isn't bedding sold in Calif. treated with an "anti-fire" chemical and many bedding manufacturers use this chemical for the sole purpose of being able to sell their products in Calif.? I had a pillow once that smelled and the manufacturer told me that the smell would go away as it was this

"anti-fire" chemical that was making it smell. The smell did go away....

Yeah, the beds have to pass fire tests.

My new "organic" bed does not have the chemicals, but the materials are naturally fire resistant, so pass the test. The only non-organic thing in the bed is the thread as they have to use this certain thread for fire reasons. My new bed does not smell.

If you check out the website I posted, the beds are also available in CA. I HIGHLY recommend them! I love, love, love my new bed!!!!! I also bought the pillow and it's as good as the say.

I don't know if this will make sense .... I never smelled the mold (I normally get an itchy nose and eyes around mold), and I've never noticed the chemical off gassing from bedding .... but last night I really, really noticed the lack of the smells.

My parents and my brother have these beds. My brother no longer uses his and I've been trying to convince my parents that they need to check theirs. My mom's been having trouble breathing lately and I suggested the possibility that the bed may be an issue. Hopefully they'll check it.

If something has a funky smell, out on the porch it goes to "out gas" for a week or so. Then I bring it in and re-smell. This usually does the trick. Most of the out-gassing is at first and if you do it outside it doesnt get trapped indoors.

This morning during the "meet and greet" time at church one of the ladies came up to me with a big hug and thanked me for sending an e-mail about the beds to the church body. Her husband has been having sinus problems that were not responding to anything and she had been praying for healing.

You guessed it. She opened up their Sleep Number bed and there was the mold! He should be just fine in a few days!

I posted a bulletin on My Space to all of my friends and already I am getting responses:

Sharon thank you so much!! I have one of these beds and have to get up in the middle of the night and sleep on the couch..suffering horrible asthma attacks and my hubby doesn't believe it. I opened it up and there it was to my horror.......mold!!! This is wonderful, maybe I'll be able to sleep well again!

I have been sleeping through the night for the first time in several years. I am feeling much better than I have been. The change has been dramatic, though I know I need to do some heavy detoxing now of the biotoxins from the mold.

I took a test on biotoxin.info for the likelyhood of being toxic and scored 99.99% chance. That's no surprise with Lyme Disease and now with no known exposure to mold. Now I know why anything I do to help with detox has a real effect on how I feel.

So, I still have a long way to go, but I'm on the right track and this might be the last missing piece! (I hope!)

What a scary thread. Thanks Carla for posting this. We just bought one of these a few months ago. I hate it & hubby loves it!

I did unzip it & nothing to be found.. I'll continue to check it monthly now.

Our old mattress we both loved but it was over twenty years old & getting shabby . We searched & searched for a new mattress & forover ayear couldn't make a decision on what to buy. Now boy I'm sorry we bought this one. The price is high. I haven't read the article as yet .

Carla , I guess I missed the organic one you now have--- what is the company that sells it or where did you buy from?

Hi Mamaw, now they use foam that prevents mold growth so I think you're okay. Won't hurt to check though.

Yeah, I have a regular type mattress....but I unzipped my dust protective cover and looked under just to be sure. This thread gave me the creeps.
