I Am Very Confused About Celaic Disease In General.

Ok So i been doing tons of research and discovered I have "celiac" disease. Its been 1 month and 2 weeks to being totally gluten free. Since then I have seen pretty dramatic results in terms of my overall health and energy levels. But I am still getting into minor relapses in overall health quite frequently infact. I am starting to think celiac is a result of 'leaky gut' and have taken measures to cure that. Which brings into question is celiac jus another autoimmune disease caused by a floral imablance in the gut? I am getting very confused , for instance if I eat too much food I dont get the same issues I get from eating gluten but I still get symptons of bloating , fatigue , distension in the gut, gut wrenching pain in the gut. Or this Just from me neeeding to heal my gut more? I have too much stress in my life and the last thing I need is this please someone shed some light on what I need to do to get better.

O yah and its weird i get this really itchy rash on my back and shoulders and somtimes belly that swell after i scratch them. Could this be yeast related?

IMO, Pandaman, it sounds like you may be eating hidden gluten to have those symtoms. Or you could also be lactose intolerant, many celiacs are. Your gut is going to follow if you discover all your food sensitivities, that's not to say you may have other problems but by your own admision, you are showing dramatic improvement on a gluten-free diet. Try laying off the milk for awhile. What do you think?

The rash sounds like it could be dermatitis herpetiformis, a symptom of celiac disease also. There is information on this website about it. Also pictures of rashes and a forum topic where people discuss it. Check it out.

Hang in there and check your diet for hidden gluten!

As the pp said, if you have pretty dramatic results with just the removal of gluten, then that's likely the culprit. However, most of us don't get off with just one food intolerance. And usually, dairy is the secondary issue.

Celiac is an autoimmune disease, as you said, but the triggers are not always known in every case. For me, my doc and I believe it was my pregnancy. The celiac then caused leaky gut for me, because of the breakdown of my intestines due to the gluten. I didn't have any gut issues before I was pregnant, could eat pretty much whatever I wanted. No matter how much healing I do, floral gut balancing I do, I'll never be able to eat gluten again. If you have Celiac, that is the case.

I would also suggest cutting out dairy. For me, it made the rest of the difference. My advice would be to start with the top allergens and cut them out. Then slowly add them back in and see what specifically is causing you problems.

In addition to dairy, be wary of soy too, especially if you are using gluten replacement foods. When food processors take out the gluten they often substitute soy. Soy gave me horrendous rashes and itching when I went gluten-free.

I know that alot of the time when people first start to be gluten-free, they are still eating something that contains gluten without realizing it. never ever ever automatically assume somthing is gluten-free...it is in everything! and sometimes you will never know if something has gluten in it becuase there could be an ingredient like "natural and artificial flavors" that may or may not have gluten.

if i were you, for a few weeks i would only eat foods that are specifically marked gluten-free on them or foods that are obviously gluten-free like fresh fruits and vegetables. see how you feel. if you feel fine then start adding other things back into your diet, one day at a time. this way it is easy to identify which food made you feel badly.

for me, i kept getting sick for awhile becuase i didn't realize that "all spice" contained flour. also, i assumed that all milk chocolate was gluten free which it is not. alot of it is flavored with barley malt (like godiva).

I actually realized I was celiac for about 3 monthes now but only 1 month and 2 weeks ago I think I got the hang of it. I know when I have been glutened cause I get major constipation followed by D then my anal up feels like it burning and swollen for a long time followed by gurgling. If I eat too much its a different feeling of bloating and pain when i walk in my stomach like my guts are wrenching. If I eat very little it seems to be ok throughout the day. Also iono if i crave sugar because I liek sugar or because its somthing else like yeast?

Lastly is there anybody out there who has made this disease domant as in doesnt efffect there daily life whatsoever?

Unfortunately if you have celiac disease you always have celiac disease. You can regain good health but you will always have to monitor your food very carefully.

You said you are taking measures to cure leaky gut. I hope you are taking a probiotic. (Make sure it doesn't have dairy in it.) The friendly bacteria that are supposed to be in your gut have probably been destroyed by all the diarrhea. It helps you heal, helps your immune system, and helps even out the extremes of diarrhea/constipation.

I am eating coconut kefir and coconut kefir pudding. I also bought a product called coco biotic whihc contains some oats and stuff in it but says its gluten free anybody have any info on this. SUre tastes bad.

Seriously, if you've only been gluten free for one and a half months, it could very well be just simply a case of your intestines not being healed completely. It can take a couple years to heal!

Be nice to your gut and don't eat very hard to digest stuff for a while, don't eat huge portions but just enough that you can still digest it, maybe that is all it will take?

about 10% of the celiac population reacts to avenin, the protein in oats, which is chemically very similar to gliadin, the wheat protein which causes the autoimmune reaction of celiac. I would get rid of that product for at least a few months so you have *no* sources of gluten (also anything with wheat grass). also check for cross-contamination sources.

      He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

      Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

      Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have.It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

      @Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.
