Why Am I Still Sick?

Okay, I was diagnosed with celiac's last July. I started feeling better after going on the gluten free diet, but then something changed. I started feeling really sick in January. I took over a classroom this past January that was located between the Cafeteria and home economics room. I thought that breathing in all the gluten was what was making me sick. That job ended two weeks ago, but I was still feeling sick. Then I found out that my makeup and hair products had gluten in them, so I changed all of those this week, but I'm still feeling sick. I have really bad nausea, heartburn, and diarehha. I don't know what to do, but I can't take it anymore. Can anyone help me?

In the book, Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic, Dr. Peter HR Green suggests the following reasons for not getting well on a gluten-free diet:

Lactose Intolerance, which in many cases is temporary due to intestinal damage.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, due to bad bacteria thriving on undigested food. You may benefit from probioics or fermented foods such as yogurt, kombucha or kimchi

Pancreatic insufficiency, resulting in failure to produce the necessary enzymes to digest food. A strong, broad spectrum digestive enzyme supplement may help.

Dr. Green goes on to mention microscopic colitis and refractory sprue.

It is very common to have lingering symptoms for months or years if you have been sick for a long time. You may have vitamin deficiencies and may need extra D3 and sublingual B12. You may have other food intolerances to things like soy or corn. You may need to eat simple, naturally gluten free foods like vegetables. meat and rice and stay away from highly refined and processed foods while your gut heals.

I agree with the above comment. For myself however I also found more relief by going off all grains. I now just eat squash and roots (except for potatoes) for carbs. I really feel so much better! I also have candida overgrowth problems and thus find I have to really limit the fruit I eat and avoid all sugar. You could also be allergic to any number of other things. I for instance am allergic to carrots and all nuts as well as tomatoes. You might want to be like a detective and keep a notebook on how you feel after you have eaten etc. etc. I believe there is more info here on the site about discovering one's allergies if you do the search function on it.

I agree with both comments. I too found I was miserable after being gluten free for over a year. I avoid all starch,grains, sugar, which includes lactose (dairy). I can't tolerate nuts, except for almonds or citrus fruits. I do believe that I will get better and will be able to eat all foods again, except for gluten.

I am getting better a little each day, you will too. Read the book "Breaking the vicious cycle" and visit the website. It will give you some insight on why gluten free isn't enough. ALso, it will give you hope that you will get better! Take care and may Our Heavenly Father heal you quickly and completely!

      I have to agree with you,cross contamination is a big factor for me also I have cealiac and thyroid condition.2 years for me on cealiac. Am I’m still having issues. Went to my gastroenterologist in this past nov. said everything looks good . I am looking into coffee now and what I’ve read cross contamination is possible. I’m stumped. I’m so sick of being sick at times. peace lily🥲

      You already got some great recommendations. Just want to second that Mallorca (and Spain in general) is one of the best and easiest places for celiacs to travel. I have been to Mallorca multiple times and have never experienced any cross contaminations and there are SO many easy to buy options in regular supermarkets. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

      I agree.  If someone has Barrett's Esophagus, at least here in the UK, as I understand it under normal circumstances a PPI needs to be taken long term (or similar medication).  I have two friends with this.  The PPI it does have side effects but they still have to take it.
