Pain After Endoscopy

I had my endoscopy on July 29th with biopsies and tonight I have had pain (worse than usual) in the upper abdomen. I shouldn't have pain after the biopsy, should I? I didn't think to ask the GI doctor about pain from the biopsy. It could also be the gluten. I've had it with eating gluten for two months. I think my intestines have had enough. I took some Pepto-Bismol and it really helped. Back to gluten free now. I see the doctor next week for the results. The nurse showed me a picture of my intestine but the doctor said we have to wait for the biopsy.

I had my Endoscopy yesterday,i have a sore throat today but i also have a dicky tummy.Yesterday i felt like i'd been booted in the belly by a horse it was really sore and bloated.I felt them taking the biopsy it was a strange sensation they took 5 in total..no wonder it feels sore.The doc said that i may have a sore throat for couple of days.its going to be a long wait for the results...i have gone gluten freee regardless of what they say (results)

Yes, I had a sore throat also for a couple of days. I never read any post here about anyone having a sore belly after it but I guess it could happen.

You could feel the biopsies? What kind of sedation did you have?

I am glad the Pepto helped it was what I used to. I had pain also however I didn't do a gluten challenge for the last one but had a nasty reaction to the prep. Doc gave me Prilosec cause he found lots of irritation but since I had no pain at all before the procedure I decided to give the pepto a try first. If you still have to take the pepto for more than a few more days I would check with the doctor. Note - the pepto can make your stool black if you are taking it frequently. But if you notice black stool and you have stopped the pepto or if you start to run a fever do call your doctor.

Okay, thanks for the info. My stomach is a little sore, but definitely is better. I figure I'll remember today August 1st as the start of my gluten-free lifestyle. I read a lot of your posts and I know you suggest to start eating simple and that's what I'm going to do.

How long did you have the pain after the procedure?

I had a lot of belly pain after my endoscopy. They blow air into your belly to be able to see the lining of your stomach better and so your belly may feel very distended, tight and sore. It took a couple days for me to start feeling better. Going gluten-free will also help :)

For me it was just a few days and it never reappeared.

I felt a kind of tugging sensation and it felt tender immdiatley they took it,i think i must have had very little saliva that day cause the whole procedure seemed to be dry and tuggy in my pipes (for want of a better description :huh: ) the area of the biopsies felt a little tender for days after.I am still uncomfortabe today actually and its four days ago now,i can still feel the area in my throat that was made sore.

      thank you RMJ! That is very helpful advice. Good to know we aren’t crazy if we don’t do the endoscopy. We are going to try the gluten free and see how symptoms and levels improve. thank you Wheatwacked (love the username lol) that is also reassuring. Thankfully she has an amazing and experienced pediatrician. And yesss I forgot to mention the poo...

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies. Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree. Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant. That may happen even with endoscopy. Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end...

She has the weirdest poop issues.    How long did it take y'all to start seeing improvement in symptoms?

      My son was diagnosed when he was weaned in 1976 after several endoscopies.  Given your two year old's symptoms and your family history and your pediatrition advocating for the dx, I would agree.  Whether an endoscopy is positive or negative is irrelevant.   That may happen even with endoscopy.  Pick your doctors with that in mind. In the end you save the potential trauma of the endoscopy for your baby.   Mine also had really nasty poop.  His doctor started him on Nutramigen Infant because at the time it was the only product that was hypo allergenic and had complete nutrition. The improvement was immediate.

The other things you can do besides an endoscopy would be: 1.  Genetic testing.  Unfortunately a large proportion of the population has genes permissive for celiac disease, but only a small proportion of those with the genes have it. With family history it is likely she has the genes. 2.  Try a gluten free diet and see if the symptoms go away AND the antibody levels return to normal. (This is what I would do). Endoscopies aren’t always accurate in patients as young as your daughter. Unfortunately, without an endoscopy, some doctor later in her life may question whether she really has celiac disease or not, and you’ll need to be a fierce mama bear to defend the diagnosis! Be sure you have a good written record of her current pediatrician’s diagnosis. Doing a gluten challenge for an endoscopy later in life could cause a very uncomfortable level of symptoms.   Having yourself, your husband and your son tested would be a great idea.

      here are the lab ranges.  Normal ranges for tissue transglutaminase are: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or = 15.0 Antibody detected normal for endomysial antibody is < 1.5. So she is barely positive but still positive.
