Natural And Artificial Flavoring

Hi. I just got diagnosed with Celiac's about a month ago. I'm doing fine with eating so far. But I have read in two different books that natural and artificial flavoring could be a source of hidden gluten. Is that true? I've noticed that nearly everything i eat has either natural or artificial flavors in it, even my gluten free food. Should I avoid all natural and artificial flavoring? Will it hurt me if i don't? Also, it said artificial coloring was bad too. should i avoid all of that too?

Artificial ingredients should not be a problem, because they would be of a chemical nature and not wheat, barley, rye and malt.

Natural flavor could and when not indicated, it's good to call the company. I do think it's a rare chance that natural flavor should contain gluten, but do check.

Wheat must always be listed, but barley, malt and rye do not.

A list of companies that has a clear gluten policy. If you don't see "wheat, rye, barley, barley malt, oats" on the labels, its not there, or hidden in "flavors, starches, etc." Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link This makes shopping MUCH easier.

FDA foods are required to list wheat - it cannot be hidden.

Rule #1: Never eat anything without reading the label first.

Rule #2: Consistently check labels, even of your favorite products, as product formulations can change.

Rule #3: If you are unsure of an ingredient, or the company's policy on labeling, call the phone number on the back of the product or email the company.

Should I avoid all natural and artificial flavoring?

There is a new Whole Foods product - Carbonated Italian Mineral Water with natural lemon flavour - less in price than Perrier.

I poured out 250mL and had a few sips. shortly after, pain in left upper quadrant. Dizzy. Then sleepy. Now trouble concentrating and typing.

I checked Euro Fer iron supplement online, called a couple of pharmacies to see if the reaction was from hidden gluten in the supplement. Apparently no gluten, but I'm still checking. Could be the red colour.

Of course, natural lemon flavour can be extracted from the lemon from, what else, alcohol, which, of course, can be grain based. Googling natural lemon extract revealed the alcohol content in one product to be 85%.

I was really suspect of the natural and artificial designation, and now I am certain: I'm sticking to making most meals. <_< Be well!

Flavors extracted by alcohol are extracted by distilled alcohol. Distilled alcohol is gluten-free.

the flavor may have been extracted by distilled alcohol but it is still alcohol in water, gluten or not. Cross contamination, hidden ingredients, etc., either on a celiac forum or otherwise, impacts health. Would we be writing about that here otherwise? I'm sticking to making most meals. Be well.

      Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

      That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

      Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

      Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

      Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
