What's With Spelt?

I have just bought a package of spelt flour to try some more baking.

I was looking at a package of Sha Sha cookies made with spelt flour and the label said that spelt has wheat like properties.

Is spelt a no-no?

Thanks

Spelt is on the 'unsafe food list'.

Sorry to disappoint you, but spelt has gluten. See the unsafe list here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/forbidden-gluten-food-list-unsafe-ingredients-r182/

spelt is WHEAT FREE, but NOT gluten-free :( - has a great taste & high in protein but all the same reactions as regular flour

Spelt is not wheat free, it is wheat in all it's glory. It is a more ancient form of wheat and has been around for a long time. It's a no-no for Celiacs and those allergic to wheat and I still cannot figure out why this is so confusing to so many.

Because a lot of jerks wanting to get rich deceptively labeled spelt products "wheat free" for a while. The FDA cracked down on them, confiscated a bunch of "wheat-free" spelt breads as mislabeled, and now spelt products have to state "wheat" as an allergen. There are still a lot of confused people running around because of the deliberately deceptive labeling.

Thanks for the clarification - I am new to all of this and was not aware that spelt is an ancient wheat grain.

One of the interesting things about having celiac is how much medical and food info you pick up after a while. An internet search engine can help with a lot of questions, or Wiki is helpful too. It's all a learning process. ;)

Thank you that’s really helpful, hopeful won’t have to have a biopsy.

That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.
