S&B powder almost always has wheat starch in it. Sometimes their tubes do and sometimes not.

If it only says starch don't trust it. There is a brand at health food stores which is only wasabi and not bad -- not as hot as I"m used too. If your in an area like LA or Chicago you can usually find the fresh root at some Japanese markets. That is the best. Also if you can find wasabizuke , the pickled greens of hte plant, its a good substitute and most of them are safe but its good to always check labels.

I have a tin of Eden wasabi powder that has "horseradish, mustard, wasabi" as the only ingredients. It tastes fine to me, but I'm not picky about wasabi. I got it at a health food store.

Here is the manufacturer's website.

It says gluten-free right on the page.

So what should we do about wasabi in Japanese restaurants? Does anybody know what restaurants usually use?

kenlove Rising Star

It really depends on where the restaurant is and the level of quality. In the early 80's I wrote a guide book for visiting Japanese business men in the US listing 1588 Japanese restaurants. Went to over 300 of them. At that time only a handful had fresh or nama wasabi. Now there may be more.

You can always ask to see the tube or can they used because of your allergy. Or find a gluten free wasabi in a health food store and bring that with you as you would gluten-free soy sauce.

good luck

I realize this thread is a year old but I was searching for wasabi and ran across it. The S&B powder mentioned in this thread as containing wheat in fact would APPEAR to be gluten-free. Online, the ingredients include cornstarch, tapioca starch, and corn flour, but no wheat flour whatsoever.

would be nice if they changed it but in May it said wheat.

Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.

Many years ago yes, after eating and going to bed, apparently my esophagus filled with food that my body rejected, the esophagus would lay against the Heart sack (pericardium?) and the heart would respond by becoming arrhythmic. That went away with the strict diet.

I was commenting on the report saying it did not mention migraines! Yes it does last paragraph says have not seen any evidence that Celiac cause migraines! I thought this was about truth?

It has been known for some years that celiacs suffer from migraines at a higher rate than the general populatation. It is an established symptom.
