Any Sites Or Literature To Easily Explain To Family Members?

As I get started on the diet and await a diagnoses, I am wondering how my family will deal with this. So far as I explain things to my husband he seems pretty understanding, but I can see him "not getting it" if/when I have to buy separate cookware, ask questions at restaurnants, etc. I think he'll think I'm over the top.

I can see my mother-in-law trying, but totally not getting it AT ALL. She's the type that wiuld fib about cross contamination, not understand that she can't dust her baking pans with flour. Not carefully reading labels. (Just some examples I can see her doing.) To top things off with her,she is half Italian. Every meal she makes involves pasta, bread and bread crumbs.

My family will probably be decent. I also have a brother recently on the diet.

SO... is there EASY ro understand information out there? Something that explains how celiac disease works? How just a little will hurt, even if you're not seeing an immediate reaction? How we could have gone all these years eating gluten and NOW it's just oh-so-bad? Something that explains what we can eat and not eat, and safe cooking practices?

You could have them come here and ask any questions they need to or just read the posts. If you go to the home page there is info on safe and unsafe ingredients and the disease in general. The NIH also has some good information on their website.

Thanks for the suggestion Raven, but I think I'll keep my family away from here for now. :P Though my brother could very well be on here somewhere, I'd otherwise like to keep it private. I can complain freely here.

I would say from experience that I am definitely reacting to gluten. I do also react to soy but slightly differently, shorter time period with tell tale signs. I appreciate all of your advice Knitty Kitty. I am low on Vitamin D and I have asked my gp about Thiamine who advised that we don’t do blood tests for that in the UK. I also feel like my thyroxine meds aren’t working correctly now too. Perhaps with the damage? But I will take your advice seriously as you live and learn so much. We all know our own bodies and we all have our own symptoms and experiences.  I am on a waiting list for an Ataxia specialist here in the UK. I must have Been Celiac long before being diagnosed as they diagnosed me with MS in 2004 and neurologist is now saying it has been Ataxia from gluten all along.  It has been a learning curve for me and it is so surprising how little is actually known about this by neurologists and other medical professionals, with some unable to even pronounce it correctly. I have studied hard over the 4 years and written to experts to gain knowledge. Having said that, this site is great to find comfort in fellow Celiacs and to feel like you’re not the only one 😊

Found out the the HCTZ doesn't have gluten in it.  But for me it made my sodium level drop so low, I ended up in hospital.  So it is gluten free, but didn't help my blood pressure levels. Everyone is different.

You are right, it does say that it doesn't contain gluten: https://www.gaviscon.ie/products/gaviscon-advance-aniseed-flavor-liquid/   Is there any chance you have a sensitivity to one of its many other ingredients?
