Results Of Iodine Patch Test

I tried the Iodine patch test last night. (I have been having hive-like rashes for 6 months) I put some 2% iodine (the strongest I could find at a drug store) on a piece of gauze and taped a bandage over it near my left elbow. I read that you should leave it on for 48 hours, but after about an hour and a half it started burning very badly. I took it off and the next day it still burns when I touch it. I have not noticed any blisters, but I can't tell if it is red or not because my skin is stained.

Can anyone make and sense out of this?

I'm no doctor but that sounds like a positive reaction to me.

i tried this test too- i placed the bandaids with iodine ( 2 of them) next to my suspected DH patch. i only lasted an hour- because of the burn. the skin was stained for about a week. one part of my skin was actually BURNED & peeling & raw. i was afraid cause i only did an hour that it wouldnt work- but i did get a few more DH blisters a day later.

im not sure tho- if everyone that feels a burn is a positive for DH, or only a positive for an iodine sensitivity.?? i really just started learning about this.

very few people have iodine allergies/sensitivities, and these usually come about when you have to ingest iodine. Both of your responses to iodine sound like DH to me for sure. In a normal person, the iodine would stain their skin and then be absorbed back into their skin over a few days.

If you've both just been diagnosed, make sure your go gluten-free and steer clear of iodine-containing foods (vitamins, iodized salt, shellfish, seaweed) and NSAIDS (like ibuprofen and naproxen) for a few months, these are known to aggravate your DH. I"ve been gluten-free over 2 years and can eat both with no problem now.

I have donated blood a few times and have not ever noticed that the iodine they use harmed my skin, but that was a year ago or more. I did not have as many celiac symptoms then. Maybe it has to do with the recent "flare up" of symptoms. I have not suspected celiac as being my problem until a few months ago.

chemistmama- hey :)

ya, it is impossible for me to give up seafood or to survive without ibuprofen... the DH actually surfaced in the first month that i went gluten free- it stuck around for about 4 months.. it's still not quite gone- but fading and not itching anymore. i used some topical ionized silver ointment which calmed it down A LOT. im glad it worked, cause there's just no way i could give up seafood (on top of all my other dietary restrictions).

It's been about a week since I did the test and the stain is still there. Not burning anymore, but the skin feels kind of dry and scaly where the stain is. Hopefully it will go away soon

The stained skin eventually started peeling off and left reddened shiny skin underneath. No blisters, but it is a bit itchy.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
