We read so many stories of unsupportive/clueless family members on here, I just had to share what my parents did for me for Christmas this year. They live in another part of the country from me and I won't be able to visit them this year for Christmas. So they went to an allergy-friendly foods store near their hometown and bought me a bunch of gluten free/soy free items. I got the boxes today in the mail. They sent about six different gluten free flours with ribbons tied around the packages and a whole bunch of little wraped presents that I can tell have more gluten free food in them (my mom wrapped a package of gluten-free spaghetti, lol). Isn't that sweet?

We had a pot luck at work today. One of my dear co-workers found brought the Crunchmaster crackers and nut thins with cheese balls that she checked and double checked were okay (and then brough the ingrediant list for me to check). It was a wonderful day! I was content with my chili that I brought for the group, but had a happy surprise to know she had thought of me! We have wonderful people in our lives, don't we! ♥

I got a chance to serve a wheat allergy person (who avoids gluten) homemade gluten-free cookies and cupcakes. I sent her home with LizLovely cookie pack and a spare cupcake. :D

It's just nice to look out for fellow gluten free people!

Last night we celebrated Solstice, Hanukkah and Christmas with our sons and one of our daughter

'out-laws', with a big family dinner at our house. She is so sweet, brought home baked Christmas cookies, and a separate plate of gluten free peanut butter cookies for me. It was such a lovely thing to do for me! Fortunately I'm not super sensitive to cc, so am not too worried about cc from a gluten filled kitchen, as long as I don't eat too many at one time. It was a happy and unexpected gift. We're hoping she will become a daughter-IN-law someday.

Awww, these stories are soooo sweet! Great thread I hope keeps at the top.

But I have to disagree with the OP - I have the best family! ;)

But I think it is wonderful what your parents did - love it!!!!!

To add my own sweet family story: Every Wednesday my mom works a half day so she can take care of her elderly mom. And every Wednesday my mom is there, with my grandmom helping, making a new gluten free dessert for me to try. And every Wednesday evening my mom delivers them to my house. And now Wednesdays are know as Gluten Free Wednesdays in my house! Did I mention that I'm a spoiled, only child?! :P

It's so good to hear about supportive and loving families. My hairdresser made gluten free peanut butter balls today because I was bringing my son in for a haircut and they had out a spread of food. She kept them in a ziplock bag away from the other food.

I too am so blessed and find it really sad and depressing to read posts about unsupportive family members. As soon as I was diagnosed, my mom starting buying piles of gluten-free food so that anytime I visit there's alway tons of food for me to eat. And she's managed to recreate all of our family favourites gluten free, and ensures that everything at the table is gluten free when I"m over for dinner. My boyfriend's mom is just the same and always makes sure there's food for me and double checks all ingredients. Neither of them have ever glutened me. And my boyfriend is a saint! It was his decision to make our house gluten free to ensure no cross contamination. And he bakes. Delicious gluten free goodies.

I'm looking forward to a delicious and inclusive gluten free Christmas!

      Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?

Studies have linked potassium bromide to kidney, thyroid, and gastrointestinal cancers. A ban on it in goes into effect in California in 2027. I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor. Sourdough...

      Celiac support is hard to find

      same! how amazing you have a friend who has celiac disease. i find myself wishing i had someone to talk about it with other than my partner (who has been so supportive regardless)

      need help understanding testing result for Naked Nutrition Creatine please

      They don’t give a sample size (serving size is different from sample size) so it is hard to tell just what the result means. However, the way the result is presented does look like it is below the limit of what their test can measure, so that is good.

      Excess iodine supplements can cause significant health issues, primarily disrupting thyroid function. My daughter has issues with even small amounts of dietary iodine. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, consistently consuming amounts far above the tolerable upper limit (1,100 mcg/day for adults) from high-dose supplements can trigger both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, worsen autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's, and lead to goiter. Other side effects include gastrointestinal distress. The risk is highest for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, and while dietary iodine rarely reaches toxic levels, unsupervised high-dose supplementation is dangerous and should only be undertaken with medical guidance to avoid serious complications. It's best to check with your doctor before supplementing iodine.

I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor.  Sourdough natural fermentation conditions the dough without chemicals. Iodine was used in the US as a dough modifier until the 1970s. Since then iodine intake in the US dropped 50%.  Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones.  Thyroid hormone use for hypothyroidism has doubled in the United States from 1997 to 2016.   Clinical Thyroidology® for the Public In the UK, incidently, prescriptions for the thyroid hormone levothyroxine have increased by more than 12 million in a decade.  The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's official journal Standard thyroid tests will not show insufficient iodine intake.  Iodine 24 Hour Urine Test measures iodine excretion over a full day to evaluate iodine status and thyroid health. 75 year old male.  I tried adding seaweed into my diet and did get improvement in healing, muscle tone, skin; but in was not enough and I could not sustain it in my diet at the level intake I needed.  So I supplement 600 mcg Liquid Iodine (RDA 150 to 1000 mcg) per day.  It has turbocharged my recovery from 63 years of undiagnosed celiac disease.  Improvement in healing a non-healing sebaceous cyst. brain fog, vision, hair, skin, nails. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis celiac disease experience exacerbation of the rash with iodine. The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect Crying Wolf?
