New Weird Symptom...

I'm afraid to even ask my doctor in fear he'll just think I'm making it up...but I starting getting this really strange feeling in my lower throat/upper lungs (not exactly sure) but it's a random sharp pain every once in a while...almost like when you swallow something to big. Its not my throat itself...maybe the muscle.

Just curious if anyone has had anything or heard of anything like this. It's been going on for a couple weeks now. Doesn't really get worse or better.

Sorry if this is a stupid question

Not a stupid question. There are tests to evaluate your muscle function. If this is continuing and it's only in your esophagus, there's such a thing as an esophageal muscle spasm (along with other functional problems) that you could be experiencing. It sounds like it's worth an evaluation.

I ask so many questions on here about seemingly bizarre questions and no one thinks they are stupid. Feel safe to ask anything--these people have seen it all/heard it all/experienced it all! And someone answers with kindness!

That said...I HAVE had this same sensation. As if I have swallowed a giant pill and it hurts like heck!? One day, just drinking WATER did it. It really hurt, but then it passed. I do not know what causes it, sorry.

I had it for a long time. Months. Then, one day, it stopped. I am not sure if it is because I am healing and the inflammation--which is in my GI tract from my throat to my well, you know.. <_< --is subsiding.

I agree with Emilushka. Might be worth asking your doctor if it continues to give you grief.

i had something similar months ago- while at work- it scared the bejesus out of me- then it seemed to migrate to my upper right rectus abdominus (upper right stomach muscle in an 8 pack)-> where i had severe muscle spasms- so bad i was asking my manager if i could leave- and i was the tears were just dripping like crazy... i went to a walk in clinic- the osteopath felt around- bottom line- i got muscle relaxers- and found some relief.

still didnt know what the pain in my throat/esophagus region was...then i started googling at home- and really scared myself with all the aortic aneurisms... pain starting in the throat- going to the stomach

BUT- i was fine obviously....

also scaring myself - with all my reflux issues- and smoking- i thought about barrets esophagus, etc...

anyways- a few weeks later i was dx with Hypothyroid.. then Hashimoto's... then also Grave's... so, now im wondering if the pain was coming from my thyroid...??

also found out im vit. D deficient... then i was reading about Hyperparathyroidism which can also lead to muscle spasms..???????

sorry for all the thinking outloud- but maybe you're having something similar??? maybe you should have your thyroid checked- a panel, and also maybe the doc checking for swelling ??

um- sorry to go on and on about the thyroid- but you mentioned the pill getting stuck-> have u and i already discussed if youve had a thyroid panel????

hope im not annoying anyone- but im learning so so much about it these days with my dx... and kinda frustrated that i AT LEAST had it for the last 7 years- but never knew all these symptoms <_< i wish i had. i only thought it involved being cold and overweight... if only i could have known and not suffered <_<

Thanks guys.

I have had my thyroid checked and recently a full physical...

It's just very weird. Doesn't exactly feel like a muscle, but it definitely isn't like a soar throat. And it's just a quick shooting pain...happens randomly throughout the day, usually after I swallow.

My doctor has just been very sympathetic with me so far (even after months of no results) and I dont want to throw random symptoms at him and have him start to not take me seriously...maybe a stupid fear to have.

if you're gluten intolerant, or celiac: have you had a history of reflux? or silent reflux? when was your last endoscopy?? if its been a while- it might be a good idea to scope and check everything..?? and maybe get your vitamin levels checked too...

hope you get it all figured out :)

cass---Thyroid is a good idea, but I had mine checked repeatedly. No nodules, low antibodies. TSH good. Thanks for the thought!! G.

Im not diagnosed with celiac or gluten intolerance...but bloodwork came back negative last week, moving forward with a GI (hopefully) this week...then either way Im going to go on the diet. I am praying I have at least gluten intolerance (to explain all my other symptoms) and was just curious if this could be part of that...

Do you think it could possibly be esophageal spasm? Here is a link with links to other websites: Open Original Shared Link

I have occasionally had this, though not so much lately.

zebaldwin Explorer

Hmmm...not sure if that's what it is.

I'm thinking maybe a symptom from being stressed about all the other symptoms...I think I'll bring it up to my doctor tomorrow

Do you have any other results from either of the two labs where you’ve been tested recently?  If so, are the newest results from that lab elevated over previous results? It took me 5 years to get all of my antibodies into the normal range. Then 3 years later one went up into the positive range.  I realized that I had started baking with a different brand of gluten free flour.  When I stopped using that flour the level went back to normal.  Has something changed in your diet, environment, activities, medications or other areas where you could possibly be exposed to gluten?

Thank you for the clarifcation, how can I get to the bottom of this as to why they may be elevated even on a super strict gluten-free diet?

Hi, Please can I ask for opinions on using Anti-inflammatories for symptom treatment of inadvertent gluten exposure? Should it be part of a foundational treatment plan, upon inadvertent exposure? Kind Regards,  Bronwyn

In testing for celiac disease total IgA is run just to be sure you’re not deficient (in which case the TTG IgA results would not be reliable). Different labs may have slightly different normal ranges, but the units are usually the same and the results can be compared.  In your case, what is meaningful for celiac disease is that you were not deficient in total IgA for either test. Different labs use different units for the TTG IgA test and there are no conversion factors to turn one into the other. In your case, the labs have another difference - one uses a weak positive category and one doesn’t.  The two results really can’t be compared. In each case you’re slightly into the full positive range for that test/lab so in reality your antibodies might not have jumped up at all between these two tests.
