Hi, My name is Jen (38 years old) and I am just desperate for somewhere to turn for some answers. I'm waiting for my celiac blood screening panel to get back and in the meantime I'm just miserable! My history is pretty simple - I never had any gi issues growing up. The first episode I ever had was four years ago when I was pregnant and one evening I had these sulfer burps and bloating that were so horrible- they lasted for hours - followed by horrible diarrhea - then vomitting. It was the strangest "illness" I ever had and somehow I knew it wasn't just a 24 hour bug (noone in the house caught it). I never had it again until 2 months ago and the moment the sulfer burps started, I knew what was coming. I went to the doctor the next day and he sent me to a GI doctor (we are in Germany - DH is in the Army) and they did a colonoscopy and scope looking for a blockage and everything was fine. He told me to eat more fiber and I'd be ok. Well, in the past two months I've had 12 episodes of the same nature and I'm almost positive that it's gluten. One of the things I've read is that people with Celiac have recurrent miscarriages - well, I've had 10 of them and another infant death due to a premature birth at 24 weeks. I'm also wondering about my daugter - she is almost four years old - she doesn't have GI issues, but she has horrible excema that she has battled since she was born. Thanks in advance for any advice you might have!

If you want more children, you may not want to take the time for a complete celiac work up....I am thinking you are not in your early 20's......If you can get a COMPLETE celiac blood panel drawn very soon, do it. otherwise, get serious with the gluten free diet and all other gluten free things. and new kitchen ware, etc.

Oh no! No more children for me! I'm closing in on forty (been married for 19 years) with an 18 year old, 6 year old and almost 4 year old! Does anyone else get the vomitting? It's wierd because I don't feel awful immediately after eating gluten. It's if I eat a few heavy gluten meals in a row and then I am completely laid out for 2 days - as in cannot leave the house. I'm amazed at how fast it has come on from never having an issue before?

He’s noticed it after having a few different kinds of nuts and nuts on top of a gluten free nut bar. and it’s happened after having some fresh caught fish, and tonight from packaged plain salmon from the supermarket. He has stomach cramps and feels the need to vomit to try and relieve the symptoms.

Welcome to the forum, @Celiacpartner! Does this happen with all nuts and all fish or just certain kinds? And are we talking about products that are advertised as gluten-free eaten at home or things served in a restaurant?

Hello. My husband was diagnosed with celiac disease 30yrs ago. He has a gluten free diet, with the odd bit of contamination when eating out or eating something that says may contain, which he probably shouldn’t but he seems to tolerate his diet ok. The last few times he has eaten fish and larger servings of nuts he has noticed stomach pains like he used to get when he eats gluten. After 30yrs of getting it right and knowing what he can and can’t have with essentially no major instances, this has thrown us. Could this be a new intolerance or an allergy and has it happened to anyone else after so many years? thanks

My reaction to a gluten bolus exposure is similar to yours, with 2-3 hours of severe abdominal cramps and intractable emesis followed by several hours of diarrhea. I don't necessarily equate that one large exposure to gluten with significant intestinal lining damage, however. I think it's just a violent reaction to a what the body perceives to be a somewhat toxic substance that I am no longer tolerant of because I have quit exposing myself to it regularly. It's just the body purging itself of it rather than an expression of significant damage. Before diagnosis, when I was consuming gluten daily, I had little to no GI distress. I was, for the most part, a "silent celiac". The damage to my small bowel lining didn't happen all at once but was slow and insidious, accumulating over a period of years. The last time I got a big shot of gluten was about three years ago when I got my wife's wheat biscuits mixed up with my gluten-free ones. There was this acute reaction after about two hours of ingestion as I described above. I felt washed out for a few days and fully recovered within a week or so.  Now, I'm a 74-year-old male. So, I'm not worried about being pregnant. And I don't want to contradict your physicians advice. But I just don't think you have done significant damage to your small bowel lining by one episode of significant gluten ingestion. I just don't think it works that way.

Wondering about some thoughts on how long to wait to try to get pregnant after a gluten exposure?  I have been diagnosed for 10 years and have followed the diet strictly. I have been cross contaminated before, but have never had a full on gluten exposure. I went to a restaurant recently, and the waiter messed up and gave me regular bread and told me it was gluten free. 2 hours later I was throwing up for the whole evening. I have never had that kind of reaction before as I have never had such a big exposure. My husband and I were planning to start trying to get pregnant this month. My dr did blood work to check for electrolytes and white blood cells, but did not do a full nutritional panel. Most of my GI symptoms have resolved in the past 2 weeks, but I am definitely still dealing with brain fog, fatigue and headaches. My dr has recommended I wait 3 months before I start to try to get pregnant.   I have read else where about how long it can take for the intestine to fully heal, and the impacts gluten exposure can have on pregnancy. I guess I am really wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? How long does it take to heal after 1 exposure like that, after following the diet so well for 10 years? Is 3 months an okay amount of time to wait? Is there anything I can do in the meantime to reduce my symptoms?
