Well as most of you know I decided to eat gluten for the weekend before my next doctors appointment. I ate pasta and garlic bread yesterday for lunch. I had nausea within 20 minutes. It went away and I was ok all night, until 2 this morning woke up with terrible nausea, and within an hour I was vomiting.

I either got severe food poisioning or I got sick from the gluten overdose. My question is how long does the nausea and vomiting last for those of you that get this symptom? Also could my hypothyroid play a role in this? Thanks in advance.

Hypothryoidism does not cause nausea and vomiting.

Seriously, after all we talked about with you in that long thread last week, what do YOU think caused it??

Sorry you feel so yucky, but what more proof do you need, kiddo?

In answer to your other question, if I am exposed to gluten by CC, I am nauseous, have horrible stomach/abdominal pains, feel spacey, anxious & agitated and have severe nerve and joint pain for at least 5-7 days and have wicked C, then D. It's just so much fun. <_<

Drink a lot of water, take probiotics. eat simply and rest. It passes.

I didn't ever comment on your last thread, but I read through it and the responses. I agree with Irish Heart. You have your answer. You are gluten intolerant. That is not food poisoning. That is exactly the response my mom had when she was accidentally given a wheat tortilla in a restaurant, and even now she's not convinced it wasn't food poisoning. It's just a little too coincidental for me...or I guess technically it is food poisoning since gluten is poison to YOU.

Drop the gluten and good luck. You are going to feel amazing in a few months, if not weeks or days. Safe journey!

I get nausea and vomiting when glutened - that usually lasts 2 - 4 hours and then I am just wiped out until the next morning. It takes a day or two before I can eat much. Very much like the flu without the fever. Hope you feel better soon and stay away from the poison!!!

I know you are concerned about the hypothyroid issue as well (as we discussed in your other post), but please read this, so you can understand the link between gluten and thyroid antibodies and that they should go down once you adopt a gluten-free diet. Some people do need medications because they went too long UnDXed, but I did not. My thyroid (once bouncing from Hypo to Hyper) is stable and there is no evidence of thyroid antibodies. I was told I would need meds for life because of Hashimoto's thyroiditis--but that is simply not the case.

What happens in gluten intolerance is:

The body lacks a particular digestive enzyme, intestinal glutaminase, that can digest gluten products

Gliadin antibodies are produced as the body's reaction to the presence of the gluten

The villi in the bowels become flattened, making them less able to sweep along waste products and filter out toxins

The bowel, in a state of irritation, becomes more permeable, allowing larger proteins to pass through, which further aggravates the "allergic" response

The body responds by producing more histamine, seratonin, kinins, prostaglandins, and interleukins -- which can trigger or aggravate autoimmune and inflammatory conditions

The incidence of full-scale gluten intolerance has been found to be substantially higher in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. A study reported on in the February 2000 issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences found that undiagnosed celiac disease may be part of the process that triggers an underlying autoimmune disease. In their findings they wrote: ""We believe that undiagnosed celiac disease can cause other disorders by switching on some as yet unknown immunological mechanism. Untreated celiac patients produce organ-specific autoantibodies."

Of perhaps greatest importance to thyroid patients, those researchers found that the various antibodies that indicate celiac disease - organ-specific autoantibodies (i.e., thyroid antibodies) -- disappear after 3 to 6 months of a gluten-free diet.

The researchers suggested that patients with autoimmune thyroiditis "may benefit from a screening for celiac disease so as to eliminate symptoms and limit the risk of developing other autoimmune disorders."

Thanks for your help. I have been very sick. Have not stopped vomiting since 2:30. The last 5 hours has been dry-heaving every 30 minutes or so. I can't keep water down, let alone anything else. I ate shrimp with the pasta so it is very likely that it could be food poisoning. I am not going to eat gluten any more. So you don't have to tell why I shouldn't. But I am very ill right now and its not getting better.

Dry-heaving isn't good for you and I don't know how to stop it. I've been chewing on some ice cubes because I am hot (my mom says it isn't a fever). Felt better while taking a bath, but now that i'm out again I am feeling very very nauseous. I hope I start feeling better soon. It took 14 hours from the time I ate gluten to the time I threw-up.

Once again: you don't need to convince me to not eat gluten any more. I just really need some relief from the pain and throwing up. If I can't keep water down i doubt I can get a pill of any kind down. Wondering if there is something I could eat that might make it feel better, though I have NO appetite at all.

There is some antinausea medicine at the drug store. Some people say it helps.

If you can go to sleep, that wil help everything relax. Then suck on ice. If that works, tiny sips of Gatorade or Popsicles. If that sits, small bites of Rice cooked in chicken broth or Rice Chex.

Tiny sips of Gatorade. 1 sip every 15 minutes, accompanied by a sip of water.

Try a baked potato for food.

When I was sick a few months ago and dry heaving that's what worked for me.

Typical food poisoning involves both ends....not saying you didn't get something bad but hoping you didn't because it usually takes longer to get through than gluten (son had unstoppable D for 2 weeks).

I had some D earlier. Probably about 4 times this morning. I forgot to tell everyone that. I'm really hoping I get feeling better much quicker then 2 weeks, but if it is just D then I can live with that. The nausea is what is killing me right now.

Can't sleep because I keep feeling like I'm going to throw up again.Its been 2 hours since my last one but i feel like its getting to the point where I will throw up again. I read online the dramine stops the vomit center in the brain, I took two about 35 minutes ago, worried that they will just get thrown back up.

I'm going to ask for a some gingerale and maybe a gatorade. I did take several naps inbetween bouts of throwing up but they didn't help, and weren't more then an hour long. Hopefully one of my parents will go grab me some of those drinks.

Some gluten-free chicken broth with plain rice in it.

Popsicles.

Sips of water. Stay hydrated, hon. You will feel better if you are hydrated.

The nausea is awful and I feel for you. I got glutened myself last week (first time out to dinner in a year and I trusted the chef's "flourless chocolate cake" offered on the gluten-free menu ) Bit me right on the butt. I've been sick for almost a week. And yes, I felt HOT too. I felt as awful as I did when I was UnDxed.

So, I can honesty say, I know how you feel. I'm still recovering.

You will rebound.

oh, I also sipped ginger tea. It helped a lot.

If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

      TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

      "Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶
