Today I Will Gluten Myself On Purpose!

I just made the best vegetable beef stew on the planet...tastes great to me anyway...I didn't think of any issues when browning the meat with Italian dressing. (Newman's Own Family style) Once I was finished making the entire stew...I decided to read the DAMN LABEL on the Italian dressing and it has BARLEY MALT EXTRACT in it!! I want to scream!! Since I have been diagnosed with Celiac, I have NEVER purposely eaten gluten...well I won't let this stew be eaten by everyone but me! I want to cry. Instead, I will come here to have people tell me not to eat it...:)

I used corn starch as a thickener instead of flour, made sure the beef stock was gluten-free...but I ignored the Italian dressing label...because I thought at this point I could figure most things out without reading every single label. NOT!! I don't have the willpower today...:(

That darn MALT! What is wrong with good old fashioned sugar! I think most everyone makes that mistake several times. I'm running to look at the Newman's we have but I think the one we have is OK.

I just checked my Newmans Light balsamic & it's OK.

No. I wouldn't eat it. But my hub & son could. I cook some for my parents, I have neighbors who would like it, & they could eat it....so it wouldn't go to waste.

Something like this happened to me recently. I let the guys eat it & I had something I really like ( refried beans with lots of cheese mixed in & chips). Maybe you could have something rediculous for dinner like an ice cream sundae or nachos so you won't feel so left out.

These things happen and will keep happening occasionally. :(

Thanks for the advice. I have 3 kids and a husband who will eat it. I tasted it twice before I read the label. I hate this disease! If I eat it, I will probably pay the price...but yeah maybe I should eat a huge ice cream sundae instead. Lesson learned...read ALL labels.

Just be careful. That can get confusing - keeping the batches separate.

Do they need food when you aren't home? You could freeze it with a big piece of tape saying not gluten-free & thaw it for them when you will be gone. That would get it out of circulation & away from the new " clean" batch.

That is a real kick in the bum and really not fair!

Regardless of the fact I would still not touch it. You shouldn't, specially since you've been gluten-free for a while, which means you're way more sensitive now and the reaction will from at you with a vengeance! It will bring you so much pain, so much itch, so much fatigue and fog. Your taste-buds can wait for another occasion though and you can spare yourself the suffering. Make another batch and eat it all by yourself ;-)

Thanks Karen and Dani. I made a whole new batch. It really wasn't that hard. I was just so upset...but now we have a lot of leftover stew! And I will be careful with keeping them separate. I bought new Italian dressing and it says "gluten free" on it...:)

I always have Reese's Peanut Butter cups around to help when things like this get me down! Today I bought the peanut butter cup eggs...yum!!!!

Thanks Karen and Dani. I made a whole new batch. It really wasn't that hard. I was just so upset...but now we have a lot of leftover stew! And I will be careful with keeping them separate. I bought new Italian dressing and it says "gluten free" on it...:)

B) I'm glad you had enough ingredients to make a new batch so you can eat it. I wouldn't have eaten the other one either. Now, as another person said, you have plenty to freeze for nights when you might not be home, or maybe when you're not feeling well and you wouldn't want to eat much anyway. You can just thaw the gluteny stew for the family. :)

      Hi I've been told I need a MRI on my bowels , I was booked for a colonoscopy, but because of my sever back issues and trapped nerve it can't be done , the nurse told me I will have to have a manitol drink a hour before the scan , I'm just a bit worried has I have issues with sweeteners like even a little,  I get a weird throat and ears and I've read it is a similar substance , not sure if anyone has had one of these scans or could give me some advise on the drink prep thanks in advance 😄

      Hi all ! Can a celiac attack be so intense that it causes your entire body to work in reverse? Meaning really bad pain,  neuropathy and muscle,  jaw pain,  the stomach issues , Horrible anxiety and confusion??  I had a Tums and you would think I ate poison. My jaw and stomach did not like it . Not the norm for me. Things that are simple are just out of control. Anyone ever have this happen??  I'm trying to figure out what I ate or did to bring on a celiac like attack. I had an idea before but yesterday I didn't have any gluten unless it was in a medication ?! Any positive suggestions ??  Thank you

      The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.

      Tammy, in the food industry, "gluten free" doesn't mean the same thing as "no gluten". As Scott explained, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) allows food companies to use the "gluten-free" label as long as the product does not contain more than 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten. This number is based on studies the FDA did years ago to determine the reaction threshold for those with celiac disease. And the 20 ppm figure works for the majority of celiacs. There are those who are more sensitive, however, who still react to that amount. There is another, stricter standard known as "Certified Gluten Free" which was developed by a third party organization known as GFCO which requires not more than 10 ppm of gluten. So, when you see "GFCO" or "Certified Gluten Free" labels on food items you know they are manufactured with a stricter standard concerning gluten content. Having said all that, even though you may read the disclaimer on a food item that says the spices may contain wheat, barley or rye (the gluten grains), you should be able to trust that the amount of gluten the spices may contain is so small it allows the total product to meet the requirements of gluten free or certified gluten free labeling.
