Starting School On Friday

Ella starts her little 2 day a week preschool on Friday and I'm starting to get really nervous about her accidentally getting something she shouldn't. I have talked to the director and will meet with her teacher on Wed, but I am still just really scared. Ella is doing so well right now and I don't want things to go downhill if she gets exposures to gluten at school. I am mostly worried about lunchtime and arts and crafts.

I am donating gluten-free playdough for her classroom that I want them to use in that classroom on all the days, even when Ella isn't there, so that it doesn't accidentally get mixed in with regular dough. I know that fingerpaint is also a concern. My biggest worry is that Ella ALWAYS has her hands in her mouth and is always putting things in her mouth. Shouldn't they outgrow that by 2??

I guess I'm just venting a little bit here because although my family is supportive of the diet, I think even my husband thinks I'm worried over nothing. I figured you would all understand.

Thanks for listening!!

Shannon

ACK! I'd be a nervous wreck too.....I'm so glad we haven't had to cross that bridge yet, I don't think I'm ready!

I'm sure it'll be fine, and Ella is going to have so much fun. With good handwashing, contamination would be minimum I would think. The arts and crafts could be tricky if Ella puts her hands in her mouth alot........hopefully the teacher will let you know ahead of time what crafts will be done, and you can supply gluten-free items. Let us know how your meeting with the teacher goes!

Is Ella feeling better? I remember you thought she either had a bug or was glutened, and I was just curious how she was doing. It is so hard deciphering what the culprit is when they get sick in the beginning, especially when they are so young. Since I still don't know what Emmie's "typical" reaction is, it's always a guessing game for us too.

Good luck on your school adventures! I'll hit you up for advice when it's our turn in a few months. :D

Tamara,

Thanks for asking about Ella. She is doing much better and is definitely back on track. I am still not sure if she got a bug or some gluten though. I think we're still too new at this to know for sure. She seems to feel great now though!

Sometimes her stools are still really mushy and gross. I'm not sure if they are just " her normal" or if she is still getting a trace amount of gluten. I guess we'll keep trying to figure that out! Overall, she's doing great and I hope that little Emmie is too!

Thanks for thinking of us! I'll definitely probably have some advice for you when you send Emmie! :)

Concerning the EMA positive result, the EMA was the original blood test developed to detect celiac disease and has largely been replaced by the tTG-IGA which has a similar reliability confidence but is much less expensive to run. Yes, a positive EMA is very strong evidence of celiac disease but not foolproof. In the UK, a tTG-IGA score that is 10x normal or greater will often result in foregoing the endoscopy/biopsy. Weaker positives on the tTG-IGA still trigger the endoscopy/biopsy. That protocol is being considered in the US but is not yet in place.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @mike101020! First, what was the reference range for the ttg-iga blood test? Can't tell much from the raw score you gave because different labs use different reference ranges. Second, there are some non celiac medical conditions, some medications and even some non-gluten food proteins that can cause elevated celiac blood antibodies in some individuals. The most likely explanation is celiac disease but it is not quite a slam dunk. The endoscopy/biopsy is considered the gold standard for celiac disease diagnosis and serves as confirmation of elevated blood antibody levels from the blood testing.

Vitamin D status in the UK is even worse than the US.  vitamin D is essential for fighting bone loss and dental health and resistance to infection.  Mental health and depression can also be affected by vitamin D deficiency.  Perhaps low D is the reason that some suffer from multiple autoimmune diseases.  In studies, low D is a factor in almost all of the autoimmune diseases that it has been studied in. Even while searching for your diagnosis, testing your 25(OH)D status and improving it my help your general wellness. Vitamin D Deficiency Affects 60% in Britain: How to Fix It?

Hi, I recently was informed by my doctor that I had scored 9.8 on my ttgl blood test and a follow up EMA test was positive.   I am no waiting for a biopsy but have read online that if your EMA is positive then that pretty much confirms celiac. However is this actually true because if it it is what is the point of the biopsy?   Thanks for any help
