Keeps Getting Weirder

Hello all, I was wondering if i could get any advice on some symptoms I have been experiencing. They started out at numb fingers and and awful bone pain in my arms and legs. That has been going on for about 6 years. Now, it has spread to joint pain and weakness. Also over the last 9 months, I have had awful smelly diarrhea and gas (tmi I know) that will be bad for a week and then go away for a few days. Also, really dry eyes and I have gotten extremely anxious, which is abnormal for me. Over the last three months I have started pulling out chunks of hair every morning and my tongue turned yellow. It brushes off but always comes back. Yuck. I have a hard time getting doctors to listen, the bone pain is the worst symptom and I am willing to try anything to get that under control before I head back to school in the fall. Could this be celiac? Thoughts? Thanks

If you also have little saliva, dry mouth, making it difficult to swallow. It may be autoimmune related. First thing that comes to mind is sjogrens. Have you seen a doc for these issues? You might want to. BTW, I am not a doctor.

Nothing really jumps out at me from the symptoms you describe, each symptom could indicate any number of conditions. The one opportunity I see is with your digestive disorder, since it is off again and on again. You might consider keeping to daily food journal and also a daily poo journal to see if you are reacting to any specific foods. It would be good to figure out if certain foods are causing your D and gas.

I am also not a doctor but I agree with gluten-free Lover that you might want to get a checkup. If you get any bloodwork done, make sure to ask for a vitamin D test since many people are deficient in this essential nutrient. Good luck.

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
