I had heard Cheesecake Factories spinach dip is gluten-free but was wondering if anyone else was sure. I can't find the recipe anywhere online. I know Houston's spinach dip (my former favorite) has flour added. TIA.

Cheesecake Factory has gluten-free menu? or gluten-free selections?

jkmunchkin Rising Star

They don't have a gluten-free menu but I have heard they are very helpful and accomodating if you ask for a manager and explain your restrictions.

Yes, they are very helpful! I went one time just to try it out, and the manager came and everything! I was still worried, but they knew what Celiac was and were very accomidating.

We were at the Cheesecake Factory in Providence RI last month.... Yes indeed, the manager was very helpful...

But the "steamed" brocolli had a spaghetti noodle hiding in it... so I guess they cooked the broccoli in the pasta water. If my husband hadn't seen the noodle, we'd never have known about the error. The manager was "kind" enough to remove the meal from our bill. He said that he had told the kitchen to steam the broccoli and that this shouldn't have happened...

You have to be very careful eating out because you'll never ever really know what they're doing in the kitchen....

I've had it at the restaurant in KC with no problems. They don't have a gluten-free menu, but several selections are gluten-free. I had their mahi-mahi a couple of weeks ago, again with no problems.

So I e-mailed the Cheesecake Factory to get a definate answer and the spinach dip is not gluten-free. The add flour to it : (

I love Houston's spinach artichoke dip and just recently got diagnosed with celiac, but my friend who's also gluten-free talked to the waiter at Houston's who said they use a chicken broth in the recipe that has trace amounts of gluten and she's had no problems with it after eating it.

I also love the Porch (on Henderson) but they use a roux-based sauce in their spinach dip which has flour.

The manager at my local Cheescake is Celiac himself and so is his daughter. I didnt know this the first attempt and while accommodating, I got glutened. They werent careful and I got veggies thrown in pasta water. The manager picked up the tab for all 3 meals, drinks and desserts. But I got sick. :(

Anyway, he told me if I would trust them again he would make sure no mistakes. He told me to call ahead and ask for him personally. So the next time, I did just that. When we got there, he greeted us. He personally took my order went to he kitchen and assisted the cook in every step. He told me he didnt take his eyes off my food the whole time. I had pan seared Mahi Mahi with sauteed carrots and a salad. I didnt get sick. :)

I've never had their spinach dip, but even if it does turn out to have gluten, I'm sure you could find a recipe somewhere and modify it so that it's gluten-free. I've found that Kinnicknick English muffins toast up with a nice crunch, so you could always make toast out of it and use it with the dip.

I do love the Cheesecake Factory, though! They're one of my top choices, because they're always so helpful. They check and double check and if anything looks questionable they send it right back. They've always been willing to modify their recipes so that I can eat a dish I want, even if it originally had gluten. For example, I usually get the Baja Chicken Tacos. The avocado cream sauce has gluten, so I just order it without the avocado sauce and with slices of fresh avocado. The baja sauce (which is the best part, anyway!) is gluten free, so there's still a lot of flavor. I've also had a grilled salmon with butter sauce dish modified one time, and it was super yummy. I'm a regular foodie, so I'm not happy with eating plain meat and veggies, especially at a nice restaurant.... I ask loads and loads of questions and get exactly what I want nearly every time.

Also, their Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake is (or was, last time I checked) gluten free. :) Yay! I still wish they'd just do a regular, plain old NY cheesecake with a gluten-free crust, because the Godiva stuff is just *too* decadent for me. Still, it's yum!

Since posting this a few years ago I have found out I now know that neither Houston's nor Cheesecake Factory's spinach dips are gluten free. However, I have found a recipe for a "Houston's" Spinach Dip, and whenever I make it people rave that it is the best spinach dip ever! I've actually had a friend lick the bowl. LOL!!!

I haven't been to Cheesecake Factory since I'm diagnosed. The one by me gets really really busy. I'm not sure I'd be safe from cross contamination.

I love spinach dip - I make my own all the time. Bag of frozen spinach, cream cheese, a dollop of sour cream, parm cheese, lots of garlic and garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes and a microwave :-)it's my go to dip anywhere i go, and I end up making two batches, one for the guests that can use whatever chip or bread they desire, and one for me.

I don't think any of the Godiva products are considered gluten-free. Their allergy statement is: ALL of our products including solid chocolate pieces may contain gluten. Any person with a gluten allergy should NOT consume ANY of our products.

Since the Cheesecake Factory doesn't have a gluten-free menu I don't know that I would trust the Godiva cheesecake as being gluten-free just because it's flourless. I seem to recall several members saying Godiva uses barley in their natural flavors. Hopefully someone can clarify that for us.

Also please see this thread: Open Original Shared Link One of the emails from Cheesecake Factory says they use flour on the pan coating.

Cheesecake Factory in Cherry Hill, NJ has a gluten-free menu - not sure if it's nationwide though. I'm sure other locations could always clal over to Cherry Hill.

Oh geez, you're absolutely right. It's actually been quite a long time since I heard that the Godiva cheesecake was gluten-free. I tried it ages ago.... probably a year and a half ago, when I was still adjusting to being gluten-free and still getting sick a lot anyway. I remember when I ordered it, I asked to double check that it was gluten free, and the waiter came back a few minutes later and said it was. I never ordered it again afterward because I just didn't like it that much- as I said before, too rich. I'd much rather just order some of their plain vanilla ice cream with some chocolate syrup.

Anyway, recently, I was having a killer chocolate craving at work, so on my lunch break I stopped by the Godiva shop. All the stuff I read labels for said it was probably contaminated with wheat, and when I asked the lady in the shop if they had any thing gluten or wheat free, she responded that she didn't think anything they carried would be safe. :/ I ended up walking over to the Borders and found a suitable bar of gourmet chocolate there, but after that I thought it was really strange that Godiva didn't have a single piece of gluten-free chocolate. How annoying. I'd forgotten all about that, though.

My guess is that the Cheesecake Factory probably considers the product gluten-free because wheat was never actually on any of the ingredient lists on any of the Godiva wrappers I saw, it was just listed at the end that it was possibly in there in trace amount. Gah, no wonder I rarely go out to eat anymore. Stuff like this is killer.

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
