ARCHIVED Dissolvable Stitches - Contain Gluten?
Gemini replied to carolynmay's topic in Super Sensitive People
Stitches are not a concern for Celiacs, Carolyn. I have had numerous dental surgeries over the past 5 years and always had dissolvable stitches without any problems, and I am very sensitive to any gluten. There are no wheat products in them or the vast majority of medical/dental products. It is just a rumor that they do. Recovering from surgery may be... -
ARCHIVED Skin Care Products
Gemini replied to Sarah P's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Actually, Sarah, your information is incorrect. Gluten is not absorbed through the skin because the molecule is too large. It is a problem if you ingest it into your GI tract but you cannot be glutened by merely putting skin lotions on that contain gluten. The only time it's an issue is if you have topical allergies to a specific ingredient, which can be... -
ARCHIVED Raynaud's Issues Or Neuropathy Issues?
Gemini replied to Jen Z's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The cold extremeties are from Reynaud's. My feet are always freezing but funny enough, they don't seem that cold to me and it doesn't bother me. When my feet brush up against my husband, he jumps. My hands are always cold too but they don't blanch white that much anymore since I have been gluten-free. But the coldness remains. It is my new normal. ... -
ARCHIVED Does It Matter How Sensitive
Gemini replied to finlayson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Even if there are no typical physical symptoms to warn you that you have ingested gluten, another way to gauge compliance is whether or not you develop any other AI issues. I developed 3 more in the years I did not know I was a Celiac. So, even if you don't feel it, that doesn't mean you aren't sustaining damage that most testing as we know can measure.... -
ARCHIVED A Celiac Destination Wedding?
Gemini replied to Chanahan-6's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Th labeling seems to be fine in the UK. They have Tesco which has a "free from" line and those are all over the place. I have never had any problems with labels anywhere but, like yourself, am a cook and know food content well. That really is the key to reading labels. I also tend to eat whole foods most of the time but when I want that package of something... -
I think this has been discussed here in previous threads but you don't have to worry about what the chickens ate...that has no bearing on the gluten free diet. I use these eggs all the time but have no intolerance to soy. I am sure many other manufactureres of eggs may use some soy in the chicken feed and people aren't getting sick from it. If you are still...

ARCHIVED Yet Another Doctor's Opinion
Gemini replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is true for most Celiacs. When I look back in hindsight, like you stated, I can't believe it took me so long to figure it out and ask for the right testing. The fact that the medical profession missed it, when I am a classic, textbook Celiac, is beyond comprehension. I looked like I was suffering from malnutrition and yet the doctors told me I was... -
ARCHIVED Yet Another Doctor's Opinion
Gemini replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks, nora, for this information. Looks like the doctors aren't too different in your country, with regards to gluten sensitivity! We have to change this..... -
ARCHIVED Yet Another Doctor's Opinion
Gemini replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why is there all this mommy guilt over this? If a child suffers through no fault of your own, it's a learning experience and nothing any of you need feel guilty about. No one likes lost time but it happens to almost everyone who is born, in one way or another, and I think it's just a part of life. I think it very impressive when a younger child see... -
ARCHIVED Not Getting Better At All
Gemini replied to Chanahan-6's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Burping is a symptom of not being able to digest your food all the way....it can be a symptom of low stomach acid or pancreatic insufficiency, which is extremely common with Celiac. I take a digestive enzyme because I started having symptoms like these and it worked wonders. I cannot digest fats well at all...still. Not a big problem as fats are not something... -
ARCHIVED A Celiac Destination Wedding?
Gemini replied to Chanahan-6's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ireland is awesome and the UK is also very easy to do gluten free, plus no language barrier. My niece was married in Scotland...they eloped. It was very special for them. -
ARCHIVED Yet Another Doctor's Opinion
Gemini replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
nora.....my husband also came back as a double DQ-1 but his antibody testing has been negative. He does have symptoms but not the usual gut symptoms. You are from one of the Scandinavian countries? Do they recognize gluten sensitivity there and, more importantly, do they recognize DQ-1 as a gluten sensitive gene? Try telling an American doctor about DQ... -
ARCHIVED Is The Ema Test Enough
Gemini replied to plumbago's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think you may have figured out the problem...the airborne gluten issue. Even I recognize that those who bake often using wheat flour will have wheat all over their kitchen. I mean, look how the gluten-free baking mixes poof when you pour them into a bowl. gluten-free flours tend to be more refined in texture and if they become that easily airborne,... -
ARCHIVED Is The Ema Test Enough
Gemini replied to plumbago's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I did not intend for you to feel bruised by my remarks but just wanted to point out that, unless someone contaminated the plate that your son's food went on, the likelihood of his being glutened by dish soap is next to none. You have to really use your common sense on this one. I run all my dishes through a dishwasher and do not screen detergent for gluten... -
ARCHIVED Yet Another Doctor's Opinion
Gemini replied to researchmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know this conversation has been going on awhile but I had to add my 2 cents worth here. Listen to Irishheart! It blows my mind that doctors are willing to put children on Prilosec, never mind adults. That is just really bad medicine....the Band-Aid approach and it never works. I went to doctors for years trying to find out why eating some foods created... -

I should make it clear that I don't hate your posts...that's a little over dramatic. I may not always agree with your content but I don't hate them. I can also understand you wanting to help people..that's why the vast majority of us are here....to share our experiences to help those who are new to this lifestyle. I just don't think any one of us should... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Pie Crust?
Gemini replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with all the posters here regarding Whole Foods gluten-free pie crusts (frozen section). They are unbelievably good and many people I have served it to could not believe it was gluten free. If you aren't in the mood to make your own or don't have the time, these are the best I have tried so far. They hold together really well. -
ARCHIVED Think I May Try Candida Diet
Gemini replied to HS7474's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think the difference with eating brown rice vs. white rice is your body has to work harder to burn off the starch in complex carbs. Some people can have brown rice or some complex carbs while combating candida for this reason...there isn't the big spike with your blood sugar that occurs with refined carbs. However, some people cannot tolerate grains well... -
Your MD is completely wrong on this and you should not listen to such crazy advice. People who have compromised digestive abilities due to pancreatic insufficiency have to take digestive enzymes or they cannot completely digest their food. I am one of them. It replaces what your body does not make enough of. To say it can cause scarring or other such nonsense...

ARCHIVED Is The Ema Test Enough
Gemini replied to plumbago's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most information that people need on testing can be had from any reputable Celiac organization website so why do you keep referencing your blog and trying to skirt this website's rules on that? -
You have no need to apologize for an argument that didn't happen. I was not offended by Skylark's remark...I just think it was overreaction to a statement I made that I stand by. You are correct....the Nystatin in oral suspension will help to keep you sick if it is a true candida because it's all sugar. You may have a tough time in the beginning because...

ARCHIVED Need Help Settling A Gluten Disagreement
Gemini replied to sariesue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't worry about whether or not anyone else has a food sensitivity because you are right...it would have been brought up or the person with issues would certainly be checking the food ingredients before eating them. You were asked specifically to bring rolls and you do gluten free ones. I wouldn't tell anyone either because there's no need to....... -
ARCHIVED Think I May Try Candida Diet
Gemini replied to HS7474's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You give a lot of good advice here but as for the brown rice, I included it on my diet because I could not go completely grain free. I lose too much weight and I don't have it to lose. I found having brown rice 2-3 times per week did not make any difference to my complete recovery. As it's a whole grain rice, not quite the same as eating white rice. It is... -

I agree about that stupid hand sanitizer! It is so bad to use. What is up with people today...germaphobes! When I think of what we used to put into our mouths as kids and we never washed our hands like people do today...only after going to the bathroom, pretty much, you wonder how we survived? It's been proven that too much clean will keep you sick as... -
ARCHIVED How Awesome Is It When People "get" It?
Gemini replied to luvs2eat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Beef Bourguignon?????? Oh my! This is something I have wanted to make ever since seeing "Julie and Julia"! It really is easy to adapt for gluten-free but I haven't had the time recently to attempt it. Maybe during the next snowstorm would be a good time. The next time your neighbors get this creative with gluten-free cooking, I want the address and...
