  1. You are so right, Mushroom! The aspirin thing is a joke. All the older folks in my family who never question their doctors look like they have been in a titled boxing match, they have so many bruises from the stupid aspirin they take. They are led to believe that they will die from a stroke if they don't pop an aspirin every day. Why would anyone...
  2. Being cold all over is not a symptom of Reynaud's, that is more in line with thyroid disease. Reynaud's will cause blanching and numbness in the hands and feet. I also have that happen with my feet when I get into a hot tub....it feels like they are defrosting. I exercise twice a week at the gym and that really helps warm up the toes and fingers. ...
  3. That is a good point, without doubt, but I have my blood work regularly checked and it's always fantastic. Plus, if oats were damaging your intestines, over time you would start to notice symptoms or just be "off". Since going gluten-free 7 years ago, I have had zero stomach issues, except for the rare glutening. Gastro symptoms were the number one symptom...
  4. Just because there is no legal definition of gluten free in the States does not mean that all the gluten free products sold here are not safe to eat. Most companies who provide these products do a very good job of it, otherwise diagnosed Celiacs in this country would not recover, including very sensitive me. Eating lots of processed foods is not healthy...
  5. Depends on what type of oranges are used. They would also have to list whether flavorings are used and I have never seen oj with flavorings listed on the carton. Last of all....flavorings rarely contain gluten. You should always check your source but I have never come across any flavoring that contained gluten in the 7 years I have been gluten free. The...
  6. This is good advice and I agree completely! I wouldn't go to an endo because all they want to do is expensive radioactive testing. You don't need that testing...do the simple blood work and you'll get some answers.
  7. Oatmeal and brown rice are a good source of fiber and nutrients and are not the type of carbs to worry about, unless you are a diabetic. I can see your point about white rice being a filler with no nutritive value but not the case with the others. They are a good addition to most people's diets, unless you have a medical problem which would prohibit consumption...
  8. If I am understanding your post correctly, they repeated the tTg test for compliance? That is not the correct test to run for compliance for the gluten-free diet. That measures intestinal damage only and not whether you are ingesting gluten. The demeadiated gliadin test would be the one to run to see if you are ingesting gluten. Doctors make this mistake...
  9. To be honest with you, I was diagnosed with Celiac and then went home to get well. I did not involve doctors after the diagnosis because I don't like or trust them. They did such a crappy job diagnosing me, I wasn't going to trust them with getting me well. I did not read anything about oatmeal and waiting to heal before trying it. I always ate a lot...
  10. There are many foods that Europeans use that Americans don't. That doesn't mean Europeans are wrong....they still eat better than most Americans do. I have eaten lupini beans in salads and they are very good. I also buy Italian pasta's because the gluten-free brands here in the States just aren't very good. Bi-Aglut pasta, from Italy, uses lupini flour...
  11. This is excellent advice! Protein powders can add many calories when you just cannot eat another morsel of food. I also have low body weight and struggle to keep the pounds on. Protein shakes are good and really work....regardless of what some people may tell you. Liquids slide down much easier than solids so it's easier to pound these down. Once you...
  12. What is harmful to livestock may not be harmful to humans. Apparently so because lupin flour is used extensively in Italy. If you don't want to eat it, that's fine but it doesn't mean people are harmed if they do. Like I said, I haven't noticed a lupin health epidemic in Italy......
  13. From what I have read and from what I have heard from people who have visited Italy, kids are tested if there is Celiac in their family. It is true that those with a peanut allegy cannot eat lupin based products but what that has to do with Celiac is beyond me. Lupin flour is safe for Celiacs and makes a great pasta.
  14. I find that any make-up remover that contains oil, whether gluten based or not, causes irritation to the eye. Oil is not something you want to be getting into your eye and it has little to do with gluten. I use a cream based remover and it also moisturizes your eye lid. I have Sjogren's Syndrome and my eyes are easily irritated but this seems to work well...

    ARCHIVED What Could It Be?

Unless you're licking the TV remote or somehow putting it in your mouth, the odds of anyone becoming sick from that is slim to none. This is the kind of paranoia that runs rampant with this disease. With all the comtagious diseases out there like colds and flu, who routinely puts their hands in their mouths without washing them?
  16. We are not livestock. Italians use lupin flour, made from lupini beans (sp?) for use in gluten-free pastas and it makes some of the best pasta I have ever had. I haven't noticed hoards of Italians dying from it's use!
  17. No, you are not that odd! There are people out there with virtually no symptoms yet have Celiac. Kids heal differently and everyone has their own timetable with it. There is the possibility that there is another underlying condition, common to Celiac, that may be keeping her tTg high. Or it could be that she is healing more slowly...it can take up to ...
  18. This is about the most complete and best information I have read on the subject in a long time! Very good, Irishheart, and extremely helpful to those needing information. It's better than what any medical professional will tell you.....they are the people who coined the term "toddler diarrhea" and they think that's normal!
  19. I am not doubting that you had a problem with a Starbucks drink but their stores are only as good as their employee's. The ones in my state and in other countries I have been to all did a great job with regards to cc issues....never been glutened by a Chai drink and I have them at least 3 times per week. Migraines can be brought on by many other things...
  20. You do not need a smear or scraping for the diagnosis of shingles...only if, like IrishHeart said, it's hard to distinguish from other rashes. Shingles only ever appears on one side of the body...not on both sides at once so that's a huge clue. You can also run fevers with it since it is a virus. Other rashes do not usually come with fevers. You cannot...
  21. Hey Irish! I had no idea there was a swab test for shingles! Learn something new everyday! When I had my bout of the damn things back in 2009, I guess it was pretty obvious what I had because the doc immediately said it was shingles, which I knew anyway, and wrote me a script for Acyclovir. It worked very well at knocking down the attack. Maybe...
  22. I agree...you don't need rocket science to diagnose shingles. It's the only rash that will appear on one side only of the body...it follows the nerve pathway. No biopsies needed for this and I have never heard of doing one to diagnose it. The anti-virals work wonders at knocking down the severity of the outbreak but if you don't take them within 72 hours...
  23. Do you normally ingest lotion that you put on your face? You mentioned the small amount that gets in your mouth has no direct gluten ingredients but you should be taking care not to get any in your mouth as eating non-food items like face lotion probably aren't good to eat anyway, never mind the gluten problem. If you do not feel comfortable using something...
  24. Starbuck's Chai teas are gluten free. I drink them all the time and have the Chai Latte's too....with zero issues. Starbuck's or any other coffee shop are all highly dependent on their staff so if they don't care or are uneducated on food allergies, then you'll have a problem. Otherwise, Starbuck's has drink offerings which are gluten free and perfectly...
  25. Most of the foods mentioned that celiacs supposedly cannot eat are the grains, of course, and grains are nutrient rich in B vitamins, which keep the neurological stuff happy and healthy. I guess these people have never had really good gluten-free bread and pasta! That may account for the results this study came in with. Bread and pasta are comfort foods and...
