ARCHIVED Major Sleep Disorders And CeliacAdelle replied to citykatmm's topic in Related Issues & Disorders I have ALWAYS had sleep issues. I always either slept too much, or too little (it comes and goes in cycles). And I've had sleep paralysis my entire life (first episode I remember at 6 years old). I finally had a sleep study done in 2006 (just months before I went gluten-free). They said my sleep cycles were... "weird". Frankly I was too tired to pay...

I just wanted to comment on the gluten-free dog food issue. I really think it's a big deal. Firstly, dogs shouldn't be eating gluten anyway, and secondly, the CC issue would just make me PARANOID!! We have 2 dogs, Ninja (he's 45 lbs) eats Innova Evo (the regular Innova line is NOT gluten-free), and he eats 1 1/3 cups per day, which translates to about...

ARCHIVED Testing; How Important Is It I Know If My Daughter Is Celiac?Adelle replied to TammyK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Put it this way, if her tests were negative, what would you do differently? And what if they were positive? When I went gluten-free it was kind of a hail mary, last ditch effort to figure out what was wrong with me. AFTER I had such a fast and marked improvement, the docs wanted me to go back on gluten so they could do an endoscopy. But I realized...

My symptoms last for 2 weeks!! You're lucky!

ARCHIVED Deciding Not To Pass The Gene?Adelle replied to WhimsiKay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders I would never have considered not having children simply because they could have Celiac. I mean, people shouldn't be eating gluten anyway (celiac or not, it's just bad for you!), so what real difference does it make? We are, unfortunately, learning the hard way that just because someone WANTS children, doesn't mean that they get to have them.

ARCHIVED Ever Shared A Fridge With A Seitan Eater?Adelle replied to Mango04's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease A separate little fridge sounds like an awesome idea!! They are pretty cheap ($100-$200) and you can keep yourself safe! Oh, and your roomie sounds gross.

It's not true that your doctor has to wait a year before sending you to a fertility specialist!!! Multiple doctors told DH and I that we couldn't possibly need fertility testing (they said we were too young to have kids at 23 and 25), FINALLY we just went to a fertility specialist on our own, no referral. That doc said that you can do fertility testing...

The good news is, beans are gluten-free!! We're not vegetarians, but we eat a LOT of vegi meals. Roasted chickpeas, hummus, homemade baked beans, all kinds of stuff!! You can do it!!

Don't worry about the diet too much. It's hard at first, but within a few months, it's as easy as gluten-free cake!! Ha ha!! It's not like all you can eat is unprocessed foods, but if you don't want to have to worry about reading ingredient lists for a while, it's the way to go! If you can find a like, whole foods or some other "natural" grocery store...

1stly welcome. 2ndly, expect some resistance from your doctor about celiac testing. Hopefully they will "let" you get tested (that means a full blood panel followed by an endoscopy and biopsy). Just know that the tests can't rule celiac out, they can only rule it in. So even if your tests are negative, it just means they didn't happen to catch it....

Well, um, DH and I have been trying for 18 months. Last month we finally found a clinic willing to help us (apparently most doctors think 23 and 25 are too young to have fertility issues). My tests came up shiney and perfect, but DH's SA was not as good. He has a low count and low morphology. We've been gluten-free for almost 2 years. Next we have an...

I'm not all that into P.F. Chang's anymore. The one time we went there, the waiter was AMAZING, but the kitchen staff wasn't. We went out with 2 non-gluten-free'ers. The kitchen sent out our meals and DH's meal wasn't on a gluten-free plate (luckily the waiter caught that and brought it back for a new meal), and they had mixed up DH and I's orders. I ordered...

ARCHIVED At A Complete Loss For Words After Years Of Unethical Treatment By DoctorsAdelle replied to shawna67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I'm in a time crunch so I didn't have time to go read everyone else's reply (I will later), but I wanted to let you know, I know EXACTLY how you feel!! When I was 15 I had a doctor lock me in a room (she was sending me to the state mental ward because I refused a vaginal exam). She told the staff NOT to call my mother (even though I was a minor), but ...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Charcoal?Adelle posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications So I've heard that most charcoal isn't gluten-free, but is ANY charcoal gluten-free? The pure hardwood charcoal we use now is just perfect, except that store might not continue carrying it. Which would mean we'd have to drive 2 hours to the specialty bbq store! So is there any like briquette charcoal that is safe, or should I start saving for gas...

ARCHIVED Celiac With Fertility IssuesAdelle replied to KristaleeJane's topic in Related Issues & Disorders I would find another doctor!!!! I've been gluten-free for almost 2 years, and we have been TTC for 17 months. We were TURNED AWAY from 3 doctors because we were "too young to worry about having kids". We FINALLY found the infertility offices at OHSU. THEY took us seriously. Turns out we WILL need treatment, those other doctors just sucked!! You could...

Okay it sucks, but sometimes parents just don't get it. I don't speak to my mother anymore. She just couldn't respect ANY of my boundaries. Yeah, she's my mom. But does that give her the right to treat me however she sees fit? NO. And when I set firm boundaries, she quit speaking to me. It's been about a year now. And I have to say, I feel FREE of...

I've gotten the "oh it's white bread, not wheat bread" comment before. Um duh. "Gluten, is that like gluttony?" "Oooo so you can't have sugar?" "So you can't have whey?" "I thought you just couldnt have bread" "Hey, do these have wheat in them?" (while holding a box of WHEAT THINS) Arg. Some people are *so* clueless. I can't wait to...

ARCHIVED Signicant Other Leaving You...Adelle replied to polishmafia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Ok you deserve SO much better!! I've been married for almost 3 years (I'm 23, DH will be 25 next week), and I must say, Celiac Disease is one of the SMALLER things we've had to overcome!! So if she didn't leave you for this, she would have left over something else. Relationships take work, and it sounds like she'll too selfish to do the work. You deserve...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Scared!Adelle replied to Tori F.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease You are gonna be JUST FINE!!!!! Trust me!! I'm at 20 months gluten-free now, and I almost never even THINK about it!! Yes, it's hard, even terrifying at first. But it gets easier, and fast!! Soon this will be old hat. Welcome to the club

ARCHIVED Success Stories?Adelle replied to OBXMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Ok I don't have any kids yet, but I can tell you my story. When I was 15 I was a competitive swimmer, extremely active and healthy. Then when I was 16 I started feeling weak, dizzy, and just exhausted. No doctors believed me. By the time I was 21 I had seen 12 doctors and had been told by each one I was just "stressed" or depressed, or I must be pmsing...

ARCHIVED How Does It Happen ?Adelle replied to mxkzach000's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I got sick at 15, I was just stressed. Nothing special, but I was in the midst of "carb loading" for upcoming swimming competitions. But I just started having joint pain, reflux, pretty minor stuff. But about 6 months later everything got dramatically worse. 12 doctors and like 7 years later, I figured it out on my own (thank you google!). I have a doctor...

ARCHIVED Aghhhhhh! Gas PricesAdelle replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff Right now in Lahaina (on Maui) it's about $3.98 (plus taxes). I'm headed home now (outside of Salem, Oregon) where it's about $3.30. I WISH we could take public transit!! Since we live in a small town, there isn't anything. And DH works 14 miles away!! He does carpool home from work though. That helps.

ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Magic Bullet?Adelle replied to cruelshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips We had one until it broke (after over a year of daily, heavy use). My husband bought a generic kind because "it's the same thing but cheaper" and it doesn't work worth beans!! Anyway, with our magic bullet we made guacomole, pesto sauce, shredded anything, and EVERY morning we made coffee drinks. Either fresh ground for our french press or we used soy...

ARCHIVED Food - As Rewards / Food For PetsAdelle replied to 2kids4me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I don't have kids yet, but the petfood I can surely speak to!! I'm OBSESSED with my dog. Like, making a dog scrapbook obsessed. I did my dog food research before actually getting him. We picked Innova Evo and he LOVES it (it's grain free, human grade, amazing dog food). When we found him at the shelterhe was COVERED in dandruff and painfully thin ...

Aparently, cat litter is often made with wheat!!! There's a fancy schmancy pet supply place near me that has tons of gluten-free pet food, they actually warned me not to buy their wheatey cat litter!! There is this pine stuff I use now, called "healthy pet" brand "cracked pine" or something. Poor glutened kitties!!
