  1. I'm so excited for you!! Yes it's a fast move, but you'll get through it. Eeep!! Congrats and I'm sending my good vibes your way!
  2. I always make quinoa in the rice cooker. I use extra water, an extra "part" or so (so 1 part quinoa to 3 parts water, or a teeny bit less). It always turns out fluffy and perfect!! I'm addicted!
  3. There's a yahoogroup called the Small House Society (or something like that). They have a lot of suggestions!
  4. Ok so when we go to Hawaii in March, we are gonna work with the resort. But I'm still bringing my own food just in case!! We are going to be able to go to Safeway to buy whatever we need. Anyone know what Safeways carry down there? I live near Salem, Oregon, and here they carry Amy's dinners and EnviroKids cereal. I just don't want to show up and have...
  5. Well whatever the problem is, I'm 90% sure it's casein related. After staying 100% CF for 2 days and having markedly less issues, I popped a piece of chocolate w/o even thinking (DOH!). Within 20 min I was more out of breath than I have ever been. So I'm steering clear of that. I've seen 2 allergists who BOTH refused to do any testing. My dad has allergy...
  6. I highly doubt it's an environmental allergy, I've had this off and on my whole life (but now it's lasting longer than it ever has), and I've moved several times!! So that seems unlikely. I've also had to take allergy meds for another weird reaction (long story there) and it didn't help at all! It doesn't bother me except at night. It's not like I CAN...
  7. So I've been having shortness of breath at night when I try to sleep. I called my doc and he said it sounds kind of like asthma, "so come in and we'll run some tests and see what we can do" (read: I want to give you medication). Um no thanks. So I'm going CF (I've been gluten-free since Aug 06) for a while because I've heard that helps. I'm just wondering...
  8. I'm in the "make your house gluten-free" camp. I was SO sick. When I discovered the gluten-free diet, things got better so fast. I simply said, "hun this is changing my life. From now on I'm only buying, cooking, touching gluten-free meals. If you want gluten, you can go get it elsewhere.". He said, "alright". We have since discovered that he can't...
  9. If you have do decide between your own place and a place with a new roommate, go with living alone!!!! I've never had a good roommate experience. Living alone is always better, even if you're broke!! I'm so glad this situation is getting resolved!!
  10. Some of my bad experiences have been celiac symptom related, some not. There are more, but these are just a few major examples. 1) When I was 15 I went to a doc for my first "yearly exam". I cried (because nobody told me what the exam entailed and I'd been assaulted before so I was really upset). She told me that I would have to "go somewhere for a while...
  11. Actually, he knows that but we don't want to go back on gluten for a biopsy, too risky!! So our awesome doc just put "gluten intolerance/celiac" in his file, without testing, he believes that dietary response is enough, and so do we!
  12. Our house is 100% gluten free (even the pets). Our original agreement was DH could have all the gluten he wants outside the house, the house would be gluten-free. After a few weeks of gluten-free living, he had a "boys night" of pizza and beer (at a friend's house) he had such D and stomach pain (his almost constant stomach pain had dissapeared while he...
  13. Gfp: I may not slip into a coma, but yes I will get VERY sick if I don't eat anything for 5 hours. I eat before I go to bed, get up after a few hours and have 1/2 a piece of fruit or something, and back to sleep. But, since it isn't an international flight I don't think it'll be *that* big of a deal. I assume they'll let me bring bars and such.
  14. Thanks!! I think I'll have DH call the airline before we go. The worst they can say is no!! I was planning on bringing a TON of granola bars. They are DELICIOUS and they travel well. It's good to know that I can bring food onto the plane! I'm not sure what I'll bring, but something I'm sure!! Thanks for the advice!
  15. In March we're going to Hawaii. We've got the hotel stuff worked out. But I didn't realize that the flight (from Oregon to Maui) will be a 5 hour flight!! I have blood sugar issues, and I get dehydrated easily.... what am I going to do?? I am planning to pack a ton of these granolagave bars from the gluten-free bakery near us. But I've heard that some...
  16. Firstly, it sucks that your kid's school is being so exclusionary. I'm sorry about that. Secondly, I worked at Subway (before diagnosis!). There is NO concern for allergies or food separation. We used the same gloves to bake bread, chop tomatoes, slice cheese. The separate salad they do consists of using the same gloves, tossing some lettuce and vegis...
  17. Well DH and I have been TTC for over a year (and old doc gave me the depo shot and didn't tell me how dangerous it was, don't ever get it!). DH and I have decided that we'll never use hormonal BC ever again (probably just FAM or condoms). We would both rather have an unplanned child than go through this again!! Besides, FAM is really super effective...
  18. So a few years ago I had an allergic reaction, just my lips swelled up. I called my insurance companies nurse line. They said to head to the ER just in case because the swelling was so close to my throat. I agreed. When we got there (at like 4am) the nurse took me seriously (I had my drivers license photo to prove my lips were 3x their normal size and...
  19. Listen to us!! I was in incredible pain. I had about a million symptoms, and I was told by (I think I lost count) 12 doctors that I would never get better without a psychaitrist. I needed to be put in inpatient care for my insanity. So I went into a therapy program... and guess what he told me? "Hey there IS something physically wrong, but I don't know...
  20. I had unexplained weight gain too! About 80 lbs in 1 year. The last 8+ months (before I self dxed) I was sick, I couldn't walk (Ataxia), kept shaking, dxed with narcolepsy, borderline personality disorder, and I kept gaining weight! Was eating less than 700 calories/day and still creeping up! My doctors kept giving my psych drugs, sleep drugs, all kinds...
  21. I wouldn't bother getting tested. The tests are HIGHLY innacurate. And you already KNOW how much better you feel. You're an adult and you don't need a doctor's permission to quit gluten. Welcome to the club!! Congrats on getting healthy!
  22. Ha ha ha. So today I was watching something on TV about fad diets. Aparently, this "miracle diet" called the "blood type diet" is getting rave reviews. Based on your blood type you eat a certain amount of vegis, types of meat, etc. But each blood type diet is wheat free and dairy free!! Um..... duh? I nearly fell off the couch I was laughing...
  23. I don't really do resolutions. This is a good year to start I suppose! 1: live for today. Tomorrow marks the 1 year anniversary of us trying to concieve. I have called doctors to schedule appointments (and I saw my own doctor) and they won't see me. I just keep getting told, "you're so young, you have so much time, don't worry!" I'm 23. Anyway, so...
  24. Both our dog and our cat are on Innova Evo. It's WAY better for them. Ninja (the dog) had BAD skin issues (when we got him from the shelter, he was really flakey and sick). His skin is so soft, he's not sick anymore, I won't feed anything else!! It LOOKS more expensive, but it really isn't!! You end up feeding so much less, that the bags last way longer...
  25. I have neuro symptoms too!!!! I couldn't WALK on my own (I couldn't feel or control my legs from the thigh down) most of the time, I slept 20 hours/day, ate under 700 cals/day (and was still gaining weight), AND I had HUGE problems with my emotions (I was actually dx'd borderline personality disorder, nonresponsive to meds). 11 docs had written me off and...
