  7. Thanks much Carla I'm sure the gluten-free is not an issue as I'm extremely sensitive and extremely careful. Mold on the other hand has been a huge problem for the past 3 months. Strange weather here in Kona combined with the volcano emissions has been affecting almost everyone. Did kill it in one room but have a few others to go. Didn't link the mold and...
  8. Prior to diagnoses 3 or 4 years ago I would wake every hour having to change my t-shirt or PJ top which was ringing wet with sweat. When celiac was confirmed and I went totally gluten-free, It stopped after the 3rd gluten-free day. A few weeks ago it started happening again although not as bad. I only wake 2 or 3 times instead 7 or 8. Still I have to wonder...
  9. The Chef Mark will not have to wait to long, Whole Foods is opening in 2009 on Maui. Opened a few weeks ago in Honolulu. Some of the stores here on the big island do carry a number of better than average gluten-free breads. ken
  10. Nice to know I can still give blood. Not something I've done since diagnoses. Thanks all ken
  11. I think Nature Made says gluten-free on the label. I prefer ginko nuts you can buy at Asian markets. They are really good!
  12. Am adding www.hawaiifruit.net

    to my blog, Ken! :)

  13. For me it was a little more than just the libido/desire issue but muscle tone and the inability to perform regular tasks. I wear a number of hats including that of an researcher with tropical fruit. I couldn't climb trees or walk across a field. the shots and patches worked wonders in terms of getting my strength back. The desire had never gone away but...
  14. Last time I was on them the flight attendant felt sorry for me and dumped a bagel on top of the salad. She really felt bad after that since all I could eat was the Jennie's.
  15. Its sure good their are careful with it. I still make Margy mix dough outside! I dont have to clean it then either! <G> take care
  16. Thanks, Usually the easiest place to start is the restaurants you visit most often. Feel free to take the file I have and give it to them. The Italian celiac association files are great too and chefs here fine them helpful in preparing a gluten-free work location in their kitchens. Good luck Ken
  17. It's really a good idea but I wouldn't hold my breath for any time of national action. We've taken another approach in Hawaii to educate the culinary students on celiac and other food allergies and ingredients contained in food service items. Thats part of the problem for getting restaurants aware. They buy their ingredients from a wide variety of places...
  18. I have the same problem with my wife of 32 years. Having been diagnosed just 3 years ago. She no longer uses wheat flour or mixes but still likes her white bread and ever now and then I get sick because a crumb got onto something. or left in a pan. FLour and residual gluten in the air can be a big problem for us. That said, I should say I was a chef...
  19. He must work for the US Wheat Exporters Assoc.!
  20. I knew you had some Hawaiian in you! I can get you a job with a Hula group here

    ARCHIVED Good Doctors In Oahu

A few years I went though a similar thing on the BIg Island with Kaiser. They sent me to their Oahu clinic for a few inconclusive tests. It wasn't until I could find out about other tests they never heard of at the Kona Clinic, but ordered for me, that they could confirm diagnoses. Finally they decided to send me to get the endoscopic. The process took...
  22. There has been a lot of discussion in the past about it. Personally I'll only eat something if it says modified food starch (MFS) from corn or in one case sorghum. Although there are laws that govern how something is labeled I have little faith that it's accurate, for a number of reasons. I've very sensitive too. Basically if a company buys MFS from outside...
  23. I don't take chances as I've been glutened by CC once to often. For some it may depend on the degree of sensitivity but forme its better safe than sorry & sick ken
  24. I'm 3 inches taller than my father was and close to a foot taller than my mother. Neither of them had food allergies, nor did my grandparents. ken
  25. Hi amber the big island is -- well some of us say too developed. Being BIG, there are large parts that are untouched. Lots of tiny small towns. The volcano is amazing to see too. We have 11 microclimates so there are a lot of choices. Also with hotels, from small mom & pop inns to 5 star Four Seasons and numerous B&B, farm stay and vacation rentals...
