Its strange I never had pain with my endoscopy. Actually felt better after it. It was before I knew about celiac and after I felt like they straightened out the knot in my intestines. Hope things are calming down in Athens now take care ken -
ARCHIVED Dull Ache / Burning / Pain In Testicles Associated With Celiac?
kenlove replied to bfrange's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I think it's diet related. Since diagnoses I never cheated on the diet although there have been some accidental glutenings. When accidents happen i do get pain and I can feel the difference. After a week of being strictly gluten free and using a testosterone patch, I'm usually back to normal. Don't need anything after a week and using the patches 2 or... -

ARCHIVED Baking With Stoneware
kenlove replied to swbailey's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi, I'm very sensitive to cross contamination issues but did not want to give up my stoneware. Scrubbed them with steel wool, SOS, poured scalding water on them and then but them through the dishwasher a few times before seasoning them again. The same with my woks. I would dump the teflon if there was any damage on the surface. Another thing to do that... -
Now I Know what Withdrawal symptoms are like!

Before being diagnosed a few years ago I woke up every hour to change my t-shirt which was wringing wet from sweat. Being totally gluten-free it's a lot better and only 1 or 2 times a night. I sleep with a small towel or washcloth to soak up the sweat now which helps a lot. I dont know why, nor do the doctors, why I still have night sweats. Some say its...

ARCHIVED Help! Strong Reaction To Breathing In Flour Dust!
kenlove replied to motherof6girls's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also have a very strong reaction to inhalation if wheat flours. Almost passed out while walking though a kitchen in Europe this summer. Since I lecture at the local culinary school, I had to change my schedule to wait 2 days until after the baking class. A good quality mask that can prevent inhalation of fine particulate like pollen helps a lot. In... -
ARCHIVED Greek Food
kenlove replied to tkm831's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Like Mother of Jibril said, its best to call and check -- and make sure they check well. I got pretty sick from Gyros once since often its processed meat. Good luck! -
Thanks -- it really is especially when they argue with me. When I go to a market, I'm always surrounded by people asking questions about avocados and when to harvest or how to sell some weird tropical fruit so I'm always in a position of educator. I guess sometimes you have to stick the horses head in the water so it knows it can drink... <G>

You'll have to come to the Kona side then, I've only been to Hilo 14 or 15 times in the last 30 years <G>

I set up weekly at a Farmers Market herein Kona and often visit some of the other ones since my job is to help farmers. yesterday while visiting one of the other ones I scolded one of the vendors for selling gluten-free breads and cupcakes made with kamut and spelt. She tried to assure me that they were gluten free. Asked if she was celiac and of course...

I've spent a fair amount of time there, often around Myaguez and agricultural areas. Not much in stores so I usually eat a lot of great locally grown fruit. Restaurants in the resorts will usually make gluten-free meals if you let them know in advance. I also love Mafungo and other dishes they make with bananas and garlic but there was one time I lived...

Sounds more like a nightmare to me!! Last week I dreamt that Obama came to our farmers market and made me ambassador to Japan. I kept trying to calculate the cost of shipping cases of gluten-free soy sauce there!<G> take care

ARCHIVED Dermatitus Herpetiformis
kenlove replied to Joe Hoffman's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi Joe, Good to see you here again although I wish it was under better circumstances. First of all make sure those idiots in the hospital give you gluten free foods! The dapsone is great for some and not for others. With luck over some time the DH will clear up. I still get it occasionally from accidental glutening but it clears up in a few weeks. Itches... -
I've been to 4 different outbacks, one of which didnt have a gluten-free menu nor know what I was talking about. I will never go back to any of them. I found their staff really bad, including one of the managers. Outback also owns the chain called Bonefish which had given us the opposite experience from outback. Great food, great staff and very aware...

Many of the small growers here in Kona use hot air poppers for roasting coffee. Used to be $19. at Kmart. Worked quicker than a frying pan.

ARCHIVED French Crepe Recipe?
kenlove replied to Michelle-Idaho's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi I use soba (buckwheat) powder mixed with a little quinoa or rice flower ( about 10%) and a teaspoon of sugar. If you can find the soba powder at a health food store or oriental market, make sure its 100%. Good luck -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Travel In Japan?
kenlove replied to I'm a glutant's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Like Missys mom said, its great place. I got hooked on Japan 30 years ago and have had a place there since. usually spend 1 to 2 months a year. Also trained as a chef there. You seem to know to stay away from soy sauce (Shoyu) and miso. Some miso is ok but you have to get the chef to make sure its made with kome (rice) and kome-koji. We cant give our own... -
I grow fruit crops so I dont have the problem that you do but I do get sick from inhaling flour and dust from gluten containing grains. You could try some good face masks if you have to out in the field. They seem to work for me in restaurant kitchens I have to visit at times. Out in the field is another story. I did stop using one type of fertilizer that...

ARCHIVED Farmers Market
kenlove replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You have to make sure they 100% quinoa and 100% corn. If so they are ok. Maybe the farmers market management can help you get the answers. The sellers may not know for sure or just say yes because they want to sell them. good luck! -

Hi, Kombu is a type of seaweed used to flavor rice. Open Original Shared Link Gives a nice subtle flavor. Most Asian markets have it. I use it instead of broth in the rice cooker. Good luck! Ken
