ARCHIVED Confused About 2 Yr Old Daughter Weight Gain
Juliet replied to sadiesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son gained back the four pounds he lost in less than two months from being extremely sick with Celiac Disease after 3 1/2 weeks of being gluten free (with a few mistakes in there, too - had some oat flour and Rice Krispies which has malt). So, yes, it can be from that. BTW, you can buy Ian's frozen gluten free chicken nuggets. I'm not certain where... -
ARCHIVED Poll: Were You Or Your Children Breast-fed?
Juliet replied to Mtndog's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have no problems with gluten, and I was breastfed for 6 weeks. But my son who does have Celiac Disease was breastfed for 14 months. He did get breastmilk along with a little formula during the first 4 weeks (each feeding was a combination of breastmilk and soy-based formula), though, because I wasn't producing enough milk at first. But after that, he... -
ARCHIVED Advice About Daycare/school
Juliet replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is three and was diagnosed at two. He does not go to pre-school yet, but he does play regularly at the park spending up to four hours there any single day. He eats lunch there and snacks and has a regular set of friends that he meets there about 5 days a week. As soon as he was diagnosed, we started telling him that he can't have gluten food, only... -
ARCHIVED Baby Endoscopy Results
Juliet replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
A lot of Crayola products are gluten free and also free of allergens. Here's a quote from the website: " Question Due to allergies and allergy concerns, can you tell me the ingredients in your products? Answer The exact ingredients of our products are proprietary, however, we are happy to provide you with the 7 most common ingredient requests... -
ARCHIVED What's Easier... The Whole Family Or One Person
Juliet replied to mommalov's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We bring food for our 3 year old son whenever we visit others, except for at a couple of family members houses (and even then, we still bring food for him unless they specifically say they are preparing something for him - they've tried shopping for him on occasion and bought things that were wheat free but not gluten free - they are not on top of the label... -
ARCHIVED Not Convienced Its Celiac
Juliet replied to Bellasmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Listen, about the diet, before my son was diagnosed I never could stick to a diet myself. But I always tried to make sure my son was getting "healthy" things even before I found it he had Celiac Disease. So I was a selective shopper for him already. It was an adjustment for me once I learned what he had, and I definitely mourned the "old way" of doing... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Needs Help!
Juliet replied to Bellasmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
From the Celiac Disease Foundation website, this is a good place to start: Open Original Shared Link disease-treatment.php It has a very, very short list but it points you in the right direction. Open Original Shared Link This is a pretty extensive list of foods/ingredients to avoid. There is argument within the community on a couple of items... -
ARCHIVED How Many Kids Tested Positive At Around 2yrs Old?
Juliet replied to Electra's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was two years and 1 1/2 months when the bloodwork came back as possibly having Celiac and the biopsy then confirmed it. I do not argue that the testing is normally unreliable, but our son was so sick at the time that we honestly thought he wasn't going to make it. He went from having minimal symptoms that could easily be written off to other things... -
ARCHIVED Very Confused About 10 Year Old Son's Diagnosis
Juliet replied to jmoody74's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know what it's like to have a child with celiac disease and who is also school age (but I will find out soon enough ) But one small piece of advice I was given has already helped me quite a bit when it comes to birthday parties. I make up a whole batch of unfrosted cupcakes (I like Pamela's Products chocolate cake mix when I have little time -... -
ARCHIVED What Does Greasy/oily Stool Look Like?
Juliet replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our son was having bouts of diarrhea, sticky stools, and greasy stools for the first 3 months once we started being gluten free, though by the end not as frequently as when he was on gluten. It's hard to tell sometimes. -
ARCHIVED What Does Greasy/oily Stool Look Like?
Juliet replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
With my son, it kind of looked like around the firmer portion of the stool was a slime that was similar to oil mixed with mucous. Also, it does stain more than regular stool. We normally flush the stool down the toilet, so we would actually see the oil stick to the diaper while the firmer portion would go down. The greasy, oily stool, when it occurs, is... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Overwhelmed
Juliet replied to Silver's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have to agree with involving your child in the cooking process - it also helps them to understand what they can and can't have while not focusing on being negative. My son was diagnosed at 2 and is only 3 right now but he helps "cook" his food already. We make gluten-free pancakes, cookies, soup, cream of rice, risotto, etc., together. Anything where... -
ARCHIVED Lets Talk Tests.
Juliet replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just posted this link on another topic - Open Original Shared Link . It explains pretty thoroughly what the different tests are, how they interact with each other, and how accurate they are. It also talks about how much gluten and for how long you should be eating it before taking the tests. After reading it, you may or may not want to have the tests... -
ARCHIVED Saw The Ped Today & He's Not Happy With The Gastro.
Juliet replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here is a GREAT link that talks about the accuracy of the antigliadin blood tests - Open Original Shared Link . Basically, there is no 100% foolproof blood test, but it's pretty close IF someone is eating enough gluten for a long enough period of time before taking the test. It took me awhile to understand it, but once I did it helped me to understand... -
ARCHIVED What Is Casein?
Juliet replied to mouth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to another post they had written about "neurological Celiac Disease" that I found fascinating. I don't have the link, but I did copy and save the info to share with others. My son hasn't exhibited any of these signs, but I know of several other children who have and overall this was a real eye-opener for me. I even... -
ARCHIVED Stickers And Bandages
Juliet replied to mom-to-claire's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Both of my kids got a reaction from the band aids used by their doctor when they had their last shots, but the tape doesn't seem to bother them nor the actual Band Aid brand bandages. My DS also doesn't seem to be bothered by the self-adhesive stickers. -
ARCHIVED Very Very Concerned Parent (long)
Juliet replied to nogluten77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Also have them look at your child's bone density - that could have been an issue when your son was first getting the disease and it may still be healing. Dr Pietzak (pediatric g.i. celiac specialist - www.glutenfreemd.com) recommends having a bone density test when first being diagnosed with Celiac Disease to see if it's a problem. Also, some of the problems... -
ARCHIVED The Best Chocolate Cake Mix?
Juliet replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If it only needs to be gluten free, I like Pamela's Products best by far. I liked it more than Namaste, Gluten Free Pantry, and Sylvan Border Farms. I do the "Ultra Rich" recipe on the package. I personally don't have Celiac Disease, but my son & possibly husband do, so I actually have tasted it side by side w/ gluten chocolate cake and don't taste... -
ARCHIVED Introducing Solids To Baby
Juliet replied to Katepfeiffer's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There's a lot of solid baby food out there that's gluten free. There's instant baby rice cereal, jar veggies & fruit, etc. So, if you don't want to introduce your baby to gluten, it's possible to avoid it. I gave my little girl a little bit every now and then since the latest research for decreasing the chance of getting Celiac Disease suggests that... -
ARCHIVED Need Some Help
Juliet replied to gini's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Arborio rice is an Italian type of rice used for risotto - It's got a different shape than the typical white rice sold here in the US. It's close to circular in shape with little points on the end. It has such a high starch content, that the rice is really sticky once cooked. There are also three other types of Italian rice that can be used: Baldo, Carnaroli... -
ARCHIVED Wanted To Introduce Myself
Juliet replied to mommy2twoboys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was also diagnosed at two, and once we started giving him gluten free food he went from barely eating to eat a ton. He didn't start tapering off (but only barely - he continued to eat more than he did before he was diagnosed) until almost 6 months later. And during that time he went from 25th percentile in weight and 40th percentile in height to... -
ARCHIVED Need Some Help
Juliet replied to gini's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can also cook some really starchy rice, like Arborio or Japanese style rices, sprinkle a little salt on it, and roll it up into balls for him to eat. I do this for both my three year old and one year old. You can also roll it up with shredded cheese and it makes a good snack with some calories. My kids will both eat it warm or cold. You can also make... -
ARCHIVED Was Angry Child Because Of Gluten
Juliet replied to Kelgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Pamela's Products Chocolate Cake is also excellent - No one ever knows the difference. I normally do the "Ultra" mix, but any other way is good, too. -
ARCHIVED Which Books Are Recommended?
Juliet replied to suebny's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I really liked "Kids With Celiac Disease: A Family Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy Gluten-Free Children" by Dana Korn. It's not so much a food/recipe book as much as a guide on how to deal with raising your Celiac child. And it really helped me to forgive myself for "poisoning my child" for so long, as well as the variety of emotions you feel once they... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Experience With R.o.c.k Groups?
Juliet replied to CantEvenEatRice's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The ROCK group event I went to in Southern California was aimed for a little older kids than my son (he was 2 at the time, now 3). There was one couple who had a younger child than mine, but most were all over 6. Everyone brought food and let the kids play and eat. There was another event held once at P.F. Chang's, but we didn't attend since it's not quite...
