McDonald's fries may not be safe either. Their oil contains wheat and dairy. Some people seem to have no problem with them, but they do not call them gluten free. Daughter is allergic to both wheat and dairy, so we avoid them. I lived in NYC for a few years and most of the Italian places, even those that call themselves just pizza places have really...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Canned Soup?
Juliebove replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shelton's chicken and wild rice soup has no gluten. Some of the Amy's Organics soups are gluten free. I can't remember offhand which ones. -
ARCHIVED Brown Rice Syrup
Juliebove replied to donnal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just make sure that what you have is gluten free. It isn't always. -
ARCHIVED Struggling To Think Of Work Lunches!
Juliebove replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My daughter likes hummus. She eats it with cut up vegetables, corn or potato chips or gluten-free pretzels, crackers or breadsticks. She likes salad on occasion. I also send in leftovers in a thermos bottle. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Muffin Recipes
Juliebove replied to susieg-1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use the zuchinni bread recipe on this website and bake it in muffin tins. Keeps for a couple of days. -
ARCHIVED Food Allergies And Celiac
Juliebove replied to dollamasgetceliac?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Daughter and I both had the RAST test done for food allergies. That's a blood test. Neither of us are celiac, but she is allergic to wheat and gluten so she has to avoid those, as well as peanuts, soy, dairy, eggs, and bananas. We both have inhalant allergies also. I don't think she has ever had hives, but I have and so has my mom. I can get quite... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bread
Juliebove replied to Alz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter likes *some* of the Ener-G breads. In particular, the rice starch, tapioca and Seattle brown. We buy the 2 slice packets and also the hamburger and hot dog buns. She likes to take the rice starch slices in her lunch with a packet of almond butter and some jelly. -
ARCHIVED Oprah And Oatmeal
Juliebove replied to jerseygrl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As the other poster said, oats in and of themselves are gluten-free, but unless they state that, they could be contaminated with other grains. The gluten-free oats I have are not Bob's Red Mill but some other brand. I can't remember the name offhand and am too lazy to get up and look. They are clearly labeled as gluten-free and are not cheap. I get them... -
ARCHIVED Lost In Label Reading
Juliebove replied to Chrissyb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do not buy much in the way of processed food. Most of what I do buy is labeled as being free of gluten or whatever other allergens we do have. I buy much of this online or at my health food store, run by a celiac. In the case of spices, I buy only plain spices and organic when possible. I do have a few mixes such as Mexican, Greek or Italian seasonings... -
ARCHIVED Poll: How Much Do You Spend On Groceries?
Juliebove replied to jesslynn555's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Our family of 2 probably spends about $300 a week on groceries, but that includes things like magazines, toilet paper and cleaning supplies. I do save some money by shopping at Costco and getting organic produce boxes most weeks. My husband is in the military and we shop at the commissary once or twice a year. They do not have a lot of things we can get... -
ARCHIVED Excuse Me, Are These Croutons Gluten-free
Juliebove replied to mushroom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I got croutons on my salad today too. Grrr... I do not have celiac but I do have a dairy and egg allergy and most croutons have dairy if not egg in them. I am diabetic and I use insulin so I have to eat within 5 to 10 minutes of injecting. So sending it back was not an option because I needed to eat something. i just picked off all the croutons and any... -
ARCHIVED Playdates (gluten-free/cf/sf Pie Recipe Link Included)
Juliebove replied to tgrand's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have never had a kid come over to play who brought their own snacks. Now my daughter generally does bring her own. Now because of the food allergies, but prior because I am picky about what she eats and unless I know the family is as picky as I am such as serving low or no sugar and organic foods. I uaed to get a lot of flack from some people by... -
ARCHIVED Food Labelling And Poor Eyesight
Juliebove replied to brainfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use Transitions because I would go nuts if I had to have regular glasses and sunglasses. I had to laugh earlier because my daughter and I went to Walmart in Lynnwood and we were trying to find our van. The sun was out and it was blinding her. I wasn't totally blinded, but it was enough sun to keep me from seeing well because it was coming right in our... -
I don't have celiac, but I do have diabetes and food allergies. After I was diagnosed with diabetes, I refused to go to any knid of social thing that involved food. Not even the movies. I just couldn't handle that others around me could eat all kinds of food so carefree! By the time I found out about my food allergies, things got easier. But there...

ARCHIVED Ideas To Fill Up 7 Year Old?
Juliebove replied to AMQmom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am not sure what EE is. My daughter was diagnosed at age 6 and with her, it was mainly her behavior that led to her diagnosis. Looking back I can now see that all her sinus and ear infections and upset tummy was also related to the allergies. You have a tough one with corn because it is in so many things. You may have to make a lot of soup or... -
I can't have eggs or soy and have been trying to find a good tuna salad I can eat. Although I have come up with some that taste good, the tuna didn't hold together like I wanted it to. Then I remembered how I made some stuffed shells using tuna and rice cheese and here's what I came up with! 1 single serve pouch of tuna, 3 slices of rice cheese ...

ARCHIVED Food Labelling And Poor Eyesight
Juliebove replied to brainfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have this problem. I am nearsighted and have astigmatism. My glasses are fine for distance, but to read, I have to take them off. Seeing as how I'm over 40, I sometimes find fine print hard to read. I bought an "Owl". It's a little magnifyer about the size of a credit card. I keep it in my purse. It helps sometimes. But with the astigmatism, magnification... -
Corn bread can be made gluten free but the kind you find in restaurants and possibly grocery stores usually is not. They usually use a mix of cornmeal and wheat flour. Sorry, can't help you with the rest of your question.

ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten In Rice Dream Milk?
Juliebove replied to jayzeemomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, the Rice Dream is really bad. Some cartons say it is not gluten free and some say it contains some really tiny amount of gluten. But they put that warning on the box in a weird place where you won't see it until after you've brought it home and perhaps even consumed a few cartons. -

ARCHIVED Calcium For Dairy-free Children
Juliebove replied to B'sgirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Greens are high in calcium. I get my daughter to eat salad as often as I can. She is 9 now and only just now will eat it. She wouldn't eat much of it when she was younger. For cooked foods, I add greens whenever I can. For hamburger gravy, I add Swiss chard that has been cut into fine slivers. She will eat it if she doesn't see big chunks of it in... -
ARCHIVED Grilled Apple Slices
Juliebove replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Me too. When I was single, I was always baking things. I made hand painted chocolates. Would stay up all night cooking stuff sometimes. Now I just give up. Have had so many gluten-free flops that I do precious little baking and don't mind spending a fortune on pre-made stuff. Breakfasts at our house are usually quick. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year I... -
Was it a charcoal grill? Some charcola contains gluten.
