  1. I'm guessing that very few homeless Celiacs have been diagnosed. The news stories suggest most people living on the streets have mental illness problems, drug and alcohol abuse problems, and don't always avail themselves of indigent health care services. Some are in and out of jail. They live in high-risk crime and abuse environments. Throw in being...
  2. Surprisingly, the big health food stores here in DFW, Central Market & Whole foods, don't carry Glutino. But we have a Sprouts Market, a small version of Whole Foods, and that's where I first discovered Glutino products. They also carry Glutino crackers, pretty damn good IMO. BTW, the Glutino english muffins are also a bit on the greasy side, but tasty...
  3. Of course they are nowhere near as good as real bagels, but they are surprisingly edible. Probably the closest thing to a bagel as you're gonna get. The Glutino english muffins are really good though! I defrost my frozen gluten-free bread products carefully. Microwave on one side for ten seconds, then the other side for ten seconds. And so on until just...
  4. Xanthan gum is a very common thickener used in many, many food items. Just about every food product that's thickened (without using wheat flour as the thickener) has xanthan gum, guar gum, or often both. Ice cream, salad dressings, and mayonaise for instance. I use both in my baked goods, half & half, 'cause xanthan gum is so expensive, and guar...
  5. Glutino's english muffins. They make great toast. Much better than gluten-free bread IMO. Not cheap of course at about a dollar a shot. Rice Chex for sure. best regards, lm
  6. That's unfortunate. It's certainly more difficult when one has multiple intolerances. I've recently eaten those sour cream & onion lay's several times with no problems. But I also can eat just about any frito lay product without wheat listed on the label. Never experienced any cross-contamination. best regards, lm
  7. Sounds like a CYA thing. They probably don't have a clue what's in their modified food starch. They just buy it from a supplier. So it's safer from a liability standpoint to state that it's not considered to be gluten-free. Big deal. I don't worry about modified food starch. Now as far as their product lines go. I think it goes without saying that...
  8. Anyone know what gluten ingredients we're talking about here? I'm surprised there's wheat in salsa. I don't use Pace often (I make my own), but I eat it frequently at get togethers. It's very popular and they have many varieties. Is there gluten in all the different kinds? Same goes for Prego. I don't ever recall wheat being in spaghetti sauces. Or...
  9. When I was a kid, I used to burn matches and after they cooled let them dissolve in my mouth. I remember it tasting good. lm
  10. Dear Ms. Montreal, I don't know for sure but yes, you probably are overreacting. It's doubtful you were physically glutened. More likely, it's a mind over batter thing. You freaked out. How do I know? I did the same thing. Ok, so I'm gluten-free for a year and doing fine. Since I do all the grocery shopping and cooking, I have almost total control...
  11. Most artificial flavorings are made from oil distillates, and other chemicals. Thus, artificial. Wheat, barley and rye are not artificial. They are natural. So wouldn't it be more likely to get glutened from natural rather than artificial flavorings? From Wikapedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flavor "The compounds used to produce artificial...
  12. I wonder if Stefanie is still neeeding to know whether Celebrex is gluten-free after asking about it on Feb 15th 2007? This is a very common occurence. I've done it many times myself as anyone here will tell you. Since this thread has been revived anyway, I'd like to add that I've been taking Celebrex for a few months. It comes in different...
  13. Thanks for providing the links. Unfortunately, they are not very authoritative sources. Tequila is one of the most misunderstood spirits. Many still link tequila with a worm. That's tourista mescal. Tequila has never had a worm. Also, agave are not in the cactus family. I also join you in recommending drinking 100% agave tequila. However, I wouldn't want...
  14. Happy birthday from me too! best regards, lm
  15. With all due respect, that is completely inaccurate. There are 100% agave Tequilas (and they will always be labeled as such, and there are non- 100% agave Tequilas (commonly referred to as mixtos). Mixtos are required by Mexican law to contain at least 51% agave sugars. The remainder is cane sugar. Same as is used to make rum. There is no grain in tequila...
  16. Cheetos, and as far as I know, other Frito Lay products, don't claim to be gluten-free. Either on the bags or on the website. It's never easy when your kids get sick. Is it possible she had a reaction to something else she ate that day? Or the day before or after? She probably didn't just eat Cheetos that whole day. Unfortunately, some people must be extra...
  17. Happy birthday from larry mac & phoebe buffay!

  19. I was sedated, fell asleep, and woke up. That was it. No feelings whatsoever. No soreness, aftereffects, nothing. Felt fine. Piece of cake baby! best regards, lm
  20. First off, breakfast for dinner OK, dinner for breakfast NOT OK! Secondly, I'm pretty sure fish sticks for breakfast is against the law in many states. You might want to check. best regards, lm
  21. Please note that this thread is over two years old. Get a good gastroenterologist (granted, hard to find, but they are out there) and an endoscopy. I've seen too many posts on here from people that got results from Enterolab indicating allergies and/or intolerances to everything under the sun. I smell a quack. best regards, lm
  22. The Best Gluten-Free Family Cookbook, by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt. It has a most useful reference section on gluten-free thickeners. Flours and starches. A must have for gravies, sauces, soups, etc. best regards, lm
  23. Very interesting link. Thank you for that. best regards, lm
  24. Happy birthday from me and Phoebe! larry
  25. What does that mean, "such as that contained in McDonald's fries"? Do you mean because the ingredients list the word "wheat"? As has been discussed a zillion times, the wheat and milk derived flavoring is added to the oil the fries are pre-parboiled in. The fries are frozen. They are then fried in a different oil at McDonald's (that doesn't contain the...
