  1. On the Celestial Seasonings web site, I checked out a number of teas (the ones I've bought) and they all said they were gluten-free. I haven't checked each individual tea, but I would think any gluten from the tea bags would be in everything. Either they have double-checked their information or changed their tea bags Open Original Shared Link In...
  2. There is no difference between Scotch and Scotch Whiskey. Scotch is a type of whiskey, but there are other types as well. So while all Scotch is whiskey, not all whiskey is Scotch. Open Original Shared Link Usually people call it Scotch rather than Scotch whiskey, according to this. Open Original Shared Link The only complication is in the...
  3. Of course, there is probably no ingredient that doesn't have someone who reacts to it. If I had to pick a likely ingredient, it would be the licorice, since this is a legume and many react to one or more of them. (Realize that licorice the ingredient is different than licorice the candy ...) Do you have problems with any other legume -- peanut, soy, any...
  4. Have you seen this list? https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=271 Glenfiddich is my favorite and I've never had a reaction. Have you noticed a reaction after having any of the things on your list? If not, you are probably fine.

    ARCHIVED Taco Bell?

I particularly like the "...studies show that most soy-allergic individuals may safely eat most types of soybean oil." But we're not going to tell you which kind of oil we have Or what we mean by "most" individuals ...
  6. Hi -- I'm fairly new to all this, but I sure haven't read of too many people who have had immediate improvement of their symptoms upon going gluten-free and that was it. Lots of people have rocky spells for some weeks or even months. I had some improvement immediately, which then stalled. Then 2-3 weeks later I had a big problem, like my body...
  7. Speaking as someone who had the genetic testing, now I don't see the real point of it. What I know now is that practically everyone in this country not of Asian heritage either has the so-called celiac genes (some think there may be others) or those for gluten intolerance. So it comes down to -- is a person reacting to gluten or not? Your son has been...
  8. I eat out as much as I did before. Finding out about food intolerances hasn't affected my laziness, er, desire to go out and have quality time with my husband. I have had to adjust which restaurants I go to, though. My favorite pizza and Italian places have nothing for me now. (I did find a new Italian place a couple days ago with gluten-free pasta...
  9. I was in the same situation and tested through Enterolab. They also helpfully (?) found I was intolerant to casein, egg, soy & yeast. That will teach me to order additional tests I guess it was worth it, though, since I felt even better once I cut out the additional items. I also didn't want to go through the hassle of going to the doctor and...
  10. In another thread, tarnalberry had this link: Open Original Shared Link It looks like I'm going to be busy! I've tried Michel Cluizel before (on that site -- I had found what I bought elsewhere) and really liked it. I bought both my kids their single source sampler two Christmases ago. They liked it so much that this is the one present they...
  11. Did you make the waffles and pancakes on a nonstick griddle? I've heard of problems with lingering gluten contamination of such surfaces. Or perhaps you used a mixer, wooden spoon, plastic spatula, etc. you haven't used for anything else and which could be a source of cross-contamination. Given the similarity of the two foods that made you sick...
  12. Sorry Given the interest, perhaps we need an entire forum devoted to the subject. There is another thread (about dairy intolerance) that has turned into a discussion of dark chocolate as well ...
  13. Oooh, I've tried Michel Cluizel before -- the single source sampler. This was from a catalog of assorted merchandise. I've taken to ordering these samplers for my kids for Christmas; it is the one thing they always say they want. Knowing what is good for them, they will share with me It is nice to know how I can order a wider variety. I never googled...
  14. Have you found that you do react to soy lecithin? I ask because Enterolab told me they thought it would be OK. I've seen the same elsewhere on the internet. Of course, this doesn't work if one is allergic, rather than intolerant. I checked the ingredients list and it looks like they have some other products that don't have dairy or soy as well: Open...
  15. I could go for that kind of work I think I would like the ginger one but it contains soy For those who are interested, here is a chart Green & Black has the shows the presence or absence of gluten, dairy, soy, etc. in all their products: Open Original Shared Link The only bar, other than dark 85%, that doesn't contain soy is the mint -...
  16. It isn't an ignorant question, because some silly companies (like Hershey's) will put milk in dark chocolate. A desecration in my book! The only way of knowing for sure is to check the ingredients. Good dark chocolate (in other words, the stuff I like ) won't have dairy in it. It will list the cacao percentage, too. I go for the highest I can...
  17. It really is dependent on what your stores have. I would advise against the Hershey's dark chocolate bar because it contains dairy and it isn't that good (IMHO, of course -- people have different tastes). Be sure to check the ingredients. I always try to go for organic because I think it is better for the planet, it is less likely to have chemicals...
  18. Yeah, you really do have to cut out everything with any milk protein in it. I'd been following a basically vegan diet for years. But I occasionally had milk chocolate, soy cheese with casein as an ingredient (my husband would just never check before buying it ), desserts with dairy on birthdays & Thanksgiving, and a bit of regular cheese maybe two...
  19. Imagine the seitan -- that is pretty much straight gluten that is eaten by itself! It is used as a mock meat in some vegetarian dishes. I used to love the stuff
  20. Here is one list of what is safe: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-18107485461.f3 In my pocket Clan Thompson guide, the following are shown as gluten-free: Disaronno; Drambuie; Kahlua, Kahlua Vanilla, Kahlua Hazelnut, from Pernod Ricard (ummm, I haven't tried the second two -- yum); Newport Blue Curacao, Amaretto, Peppermint Schnapps, Sloe...
  21. There is always testing. Enterolab, for instance, tests for casein, soy, egg & yeast intolerance. But that may take money you don't have as a grad student with a startup ... How are you doing without the corn? Any difference? Is there anyway you could plan & motivate yourself to go a week without corn, soy, and casein? These are the other...
  22. First, let me say that many people who are intolerant to gluten end up doing better without casein as well. The response seems to be rather quick once you give it up. As I pointed out in another response, intolerance to lactose and to casein are two different beasts. As for soy, I was shocked when the Enterolab results said I was reacting. It seems...
  23. Lactose intolerance and casein intolerance are two different things. One is a problem digesting milk sugar and lactaid will help. The other is an immune reaction to milk protein and there is nothing to do for this other than avoiding casein.
  24. A link to the Python routine: Open Original Shared Link
  25. I've been trying out different gluten-free pastas. A few days ago I tried an imported one that among its ingredients has lupin flour & protein. All I knew before that was the flower by that name that was featured in a Monty Python routine ... Anyway, I start having symptoms just like I do from soy. I finally made the possible connection and researched...
