  1. About meat substitute products containing isolated soy proteins (basically another reason not to want them other than the gluten ) -- Open Original Shared Link Protein needs and availability in plant products, etc. -- Open Original Shared Link (particularly the first article) You can also read on that site, and others, just how good (or not...
  2. I haven't heard about villi damage due to lactose intolerance. However, if you are casein intolerant, that is a whole other ball of wax. Have you been tested for that? Some think gluten, casein, soy, and to a lesser extent corn can have adverse impact on the gut. I don't know that a great deal of research has been done on the last three, though.
  3. Heck, I follow a vegan diet and have to avoid soy and yeast in addition to gluten. I manage to find plenty of variety. You've just started. Of course it is going to take you a bit of time to adjust and find new favorites. You have to allow yourself to grieve for the things you can no longer eat. But once you find a gluten-free pasta you like, plus...
  4. Hmm ... cheesecake without cheese. Is this a great country or what The website doesn't say WHAT it is made out of. Do you know? I'll certainly keep my eyes open for it. All the dairy-free cheesecake recipes I've seen call for tofu. I have been able to find some chocolate things consistent with my no-no's, so I'm not feeling that deprived these...
  5. When I asked Enterolab, I was told that the intolerances found were permanent (I was told I was intolerant to everything they tested for). Since I had problems digesting dairy and eggs for some time, I didn't find the results surprising (except the casein antibodies seemed high for someone who rarely had dairy). I was surprised by my soy and yeast results...

    ARCHIVED Hard Rock Cafe

This apparently is recent. On the gluten alerts page of the Clan Thompson celiac site, for Feb. 2, 2007, it says: "... Hard Rock Cafe has withdrawn its gluten free menu - no reason given." So they HAD one and got rid of it. (I knew I'd seen mention of gluten-free items before.) I wonder if someone got accidentally glutened and sued.
  7. For restaurants, I say I have certain allergies. Allergy seems to be a word that perks them up. No need to go into the IgE vs. IgG vs. IgA business. I have some restaurant cards that say "celiac," but I haven't used them yet. Not so much because I would be claiming something I don't have but because they all say I CAN eat certain things that I CAN'T....
  8. There's nothing like keeping a food, etc. diary to make you wonder about links I just realized I had a major D episode 2 1/2 weeks after quitting gluten. I never could explain it. Now 2 1/2 weeks after giving up soy I have another one. Coincidence? It makes me worry about when it will be 2 1/2 weeks after I stopped yeast Could this have...
  9. Any way to make this bread yeast-free?
  10. There are other gluten-free tortillas out there, but you may have to get them by mail order. gluten free.com has two kinds of teff tortillas (I haven't tried them yet). I went out on a limb and ordered a bunch of packages of hemp tortillas from frenchmeadow.com, to justify the shipping cost. Someone had told me they are good, but sometimes tastes vary...
  11. Here are some Q & A's about the law: Open Original Shared Link Actually it took some time after January 1, 2006, because the law applied to anything LABELLED after that date. But we probably don't have anything older than that about these days ... The FDA might set up minimum levels of ingredients sufficient to prompt the warning but I haven't...
  12. I think Enterolab only tells you if you are gluten intolerant. Did they do the gene testing as well, find it positive, and say you are celiac? I had positive results to everything (I see you don't mention yeast -- I'm jealous ) I emailed Enterolab and asked what the margin of error was, since the yeast score was so low. (The egg one was low...
  13. What got me was the comment "even a dime size portion" will cause problems. This would make it seem like crumbs, cross-contamination, and the like aren't serious. I wonder how often the author gets sick ...
  14. I've heard both. Something like gluten can cause a leaky gut, which leads to other intolerances. But it is a body's inability to cope with gluten that causes the problem. Aren't there other causes of a leaky gut as well?
  15. They test for different immune responses, so neither one is better. They are just different. The prick tests will show immediate, IgE-mediated allergies (sneezing, hives, etc. immediately after encountering the allergen). The blood tests show delayed onset (I've seen different ranges for the time period -- 20 minutes to 2 hours on the low end, one to two...
  16. I'm interested in dosage information as well. I found something at the store that seemed ideal for me in terms of content. But after a couple days I had some serious diarrhea. Of course, it could be something else causing the problem. (But my usual response is the opposite extreme.) The magnesium content of the suggested dosage is rather high (1,000...
  17. Symptoms can change before they finally get better. I've heard any number of people say this and it was my own experience as well. I've only been gluten-free for two months. I certainly remember, though, at weeks 2 and 3 my system was a little strange. Even this morning I had this big reaction to something and I don't know what. (Problem is, I think...
  18. Not quite. I heard about a restaurant that is about 40 minutes away that is vegetarian and actually has things that are gluten, dairy, egg, and soy free or can be made that way. I haven't tried it yet ... still convincing my husband that the extra time is worth it. Given my experiences recently in a vegetarian and a Thai restaurant, they will give you...
  19. No, the newsletters are free, as is access to the ones that are archived. You have the link now. But if you don't hold on to it, all you have to do is go to the Clan Thompson celiac site, click on newsletters, and then click on the active link in the middle of the page to see the archives. Clicking on where it says "archive" on the left panel doesn't work...
  20. All the newsletters from #50 on are archived on the web site. Open Original Shared Link Here is #79-- Open Original Shared Link
  21. York has several different tests. The saliva one is for IgA antibodies to egg, gluten, milk, and soy. One blood test is for 96 foods and IgG as you say. Then they have another blood test described as follows: "IgA/IgG/IgM Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) Autoantibody Rapid Test will detect elevated levels of the antibodies associated with Celiac Disease and...
  22. Also check out Clan Thompson newsletter #79. This has a summary of a talk Dr. Fine gave at a conference and it summarizes what study he did. Not as good as a peer-reviewed article, but the best I've been able to find.
  23. Mine took over a week to arrive. The web site says it is sent a faster way, but they don't do it that way anymore. You can always email them and they can track the package.
  24. I'm not quite sure where forum this post belongs in, but here goes. I received my Enterolab results a couple weeks ago and they showed an intolerance to everything tested (gluten, milk, egg, soy, and yeast). I can't say I've ever noticed a reaction to soy or yeast. I've been twisting and turning trying to cut out those two. As I understand, Enterolab...
