  1. Anne, I have the same question as starrytrek, and the same observation: There are people on here with celiac without the recognized genes. What were yours? Maybe ravenwoodglass will drop by soon. There are other genes that are recognized in Europe as celiac genes (or gluten sensitive genese). The other thing is that docs know very little about...
  2. Your story is somewhat like how I was diagnosed. I had the biopsy first - to look for an ulcer - and they looked at the biopsy results and saw celiac. My blood test was negative...an all-too-common experience. And speaking as a parent who had a kid sick with probable celiac until he was 15, your daughter will be lucky if it prevents/clears up any problems...
  3. My favorite restaurant (20+ visits, never glutened) is McCormick's Fish House on Fourth Avenue at Columbia. There's also McCormicks and Schmick's on First Avenue. They don't have a gluten-free menu but are great with subsitutions and very knowledgable. Open Original Shared Link If you want a Seattle Waterfront experience, Elliot's Open Original...
  4. I would say not to get rid of your cookbooks. I use most of mine, except the baking ones. The Gluten Free Girl and the Chef talk about converting recipes using conversion charts so you may even be able to use the baking books. Maybe put them in storage for a while? Hope you feel better soon.
  5. Marsh I "IS" a celiac stage. Marsh 0 is normal. Per wikipedia: The classic pathology changes of coeliac disease in the small bowel are categorised by the "Marsh classification." See "Pathology" under Open Original Shared Link The way I look at it, celiac gets worse and worse over time. The fact that you (and I) were "only" Marsh I is good - it means...
  6. Here's a recipe for gluten-free play-doh. Open Original Shared Link Depending on how many helpers you have, you could even make this as a project.
  7. Oh, yes, I had the operation to fuse two vertebrae in my neck in 1989 and the doc told me in 2006 that I'd have to have another fusion. After the 1989 fusion, I had numbness and tingling down the back of my arm and leg on the right side also. I was also diagnosed with degenerative disk disease in my lower back in 2005. In 2007 I was diagnosed with celiac...
  8. I have not been diagnosed with celiac, gluten intolerance. I have tried to be gluten free for months now, but seem to be getting sicker and sicker. Sorry to hear that. Sometimes after gluten is removed people get more sensitive to small amounts or have other intolerances that show up once gluten is out of the system. I just have a few questions for the...
  9. My vote is one of the following: 1) lab error (the first thing I thought of) 2) too much gluten-free treats. If they all have a small level of gluten, eating too much processed food can add up to a gluten concentration that is too high, thus causing symptoms such as weight gain. 3) thyroid or other problems causing weight gain You should let us know...
  10. I used to get hellish mouth ulcers every 2-3 weeks for 30+ years. Never got one in my throat, but you have my sympathies. If you think about it, gluten causes ulcer-like problems in one's digestive tract. The throat is just part of that. I sometimes get a mouth ulcer within an hour or two of accidental gluten ingestion. Having lots of throat...
  11. I always want to give a shout-out to companies that guarantee that their products are gluten-free. A manicurist recommended CND's Solar Oil to help my dry-as-dust nails and cuticles. The ingredients are sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, rice bran oil, fragrance, tocopheryl acetate. The frangrance and tocopheryl are always questionable and I hate companies...
  12. Hi Chad, Trail mix, as the other poster said, is good. I make my own with nuts (usually almonds), chocolate chips, craisins or dried cherries. Dried fruit is good to keep in your backpack. Pop a bag of unsalted popcorn, add nuts and raisins and other dried fruit. Reseal bag and take on the run. How about single-serve yogurt? Put it in the...
  13. So two responses to you tonight. I use NatureMade multi vitamins. They had good ratings on Consumer Reports and say gluten-free right on the label. I would also advise you to take a sublingual (under the tongue disolving) B-12 or B-multi: I use Trader Joes or Twin-labs. I also take a Calcium/Magnesium/Vit D supplement, but if you're already taking...
  14. MsCurious, I don't know what blood tests were done. When the doc called and told me about the positive celiac biopsy, everything just fell into place. I went gluten-free for one day (as best I could) and felt so amazing that I didn't care what the blood test would say. Plus I'd already talked to people here who told me that a positive biopsy overruled a...
  15. I drink lots of hot mint tea (Trader Joe's mint melange). Feels good, helps with nausea and keeps me from getting dehydrated. I'm usually hungry, which doesn't make much sense but I like rice noodles, white rice and rice chex. Mashed potatoes. We discussed this here last month, but wine helps! I don't know why - maybe just relaxation. Good luck...
  16. Roda, good for you for keeping the dentist on his/her toes. My dental history is just like your son's. My son (pre-gluten-free) had pits, enamel problems, etc., but dentist never said anything about celiac.
  17. I don't know it's a common thing. The discoloration, which starts when the person is young, never goes away and may (I'm not an expert) tend to show more as a person ages and their weak enamel wears off.
  18. Here's a good article with photos. Open Original Shared Link
  19. No, I have a full celiac official diagnosis. My level was Marsh I, which is defined as: "Marsh stage 1: increased number of intra-epithelial lymphocytes, usually exceeding 20 per 100 enterocytes" See this wikipedia article under "Pathology". Open Original Shared Link Anyone with villi damage is Stage III, which has A, B1 and B2 levels. My damage was...
  20. Looks identical to my son's teeth and to medical photos I've seen of celiac damage. I had some links...I'll try to find them later. Sorry.
  21. Hi, I just read your post about your wonderful recovery after going gluten-free...(no pain, etc) It's very encouraging! THANKS for sharing it. (I had the early menopause thing too, four miscarriages..among a million other symptoms:<(...) but I am hopeful now that I am gluten-free! :>) things are starting to improve.

    So, thanks!

  22. I didn't have a very good doctor but was told that my clinic - Virginia Mason in Seattle - routinely checks biopsies for celiac. As far as history, I started getting symptoms in high school but for some reason I thought everyone had stomach problems, namely pain (sometimes writhing on the floor) and diarrhea after meals. I also had low level depression...
  23. Strawberry Jam, most experts recommend waiting until you know the diet well and are healed before trying gluten-free oats. Many react to them, due to the similarity of protein. You might want to skip it for now.
  24. Well, that may be true and in that case, he is probably a pretty good doctor. The blood test shows lots of false negatives and very few false positives. In my case, it would have been true. In any event, Bis-quit (cute name, BTW), go gluten-free after the endoscopy even if it shows negative. Sometimes, the diet is the truely the only way to really...
  25. Have you tried sublingual Vit-B supplements (especially B6) and magnesium supplements? If not, give them a try.
