  1. I know that there are some teas that have gluten, especially Japanese teas that have barley in them. Some herbal teas may too. I don't know about Earl Grey, except that I haven't had any in 20 years because it made me sick (pre-diagnosis). I do always ask to see the label in a coffee shop, and usually check the brands out before I go (for example I think...
  2. I get teased about wanting "club" members too. I don't have much advice. Sure is a red flag for a 3.5 year old to be that expressive. I've mentioned this before, but my son, after he went gluten-free, said "I didn't know that eating wasn't supposed to hurt." The poor kid went 15 years eating and hurting. You don't want that for your niece. A blood...
  3. For lunch, here are some ideas: Soup or chili or leftovers (spaghetti, stew, etc.) in a thermos. I heat up HOT water and pre-heat the thermos and then dump out the water and then the thermos stays hot until lunch. Make a pot of soup or stock up on soup on sale (Progresso Southwest Chicken/rice, wild rice/chicken, regular chicken/rice and Beef pot roast...
  4. Debbie, I think that this is one the the most helpful points of information. Seriously, if your kids need a free lunch, they should be able to get a SAFE meal every time. If the School District tells you otherwise, they are wrong and you might have to set them straight. Eating gluten-free cheaply is not that hard, and other posters have given some...
  5. I might try too...I haven't eaten anything but fries at McD's since 1986 (including on a trip where I attended a convention for three days at Hamburger University in 1990). But pre-gluten-free I would get drive-thru fries and a coke once a week. Bad for the waistline but a quick, cheap treat.
  6. I'm not disputing anyone who has had a reaction, but I just want to say that I'm sensitive but have not gotten any reaction to speak of in the 15+ times I've eaten at PFChangs in the past year. I've eaten at the Seattle, Lynnwood and Bellevue (just last night) restaurants plus Portland Oregon(by Whole Foods) and at Southpoint Mall in Durham and also in Raleigh...
  7. Lilgreen, I don't want you to think I'm ganging up on you but really, your two younger kids are just the right age to impress upon them not to eat gluten in front of your gluten-free son. For example, my daughter was 17 when my son and I went gluten-free and it's really hard to get teenagers to change. But your littler kids are limited to what you buy...
  8. Good for you. Though, without a firm diagnosis your son and you may be like my son when he's older and doesn't have a firm diagnosis he may need to go back on gluten ...for ADA accomodations in college, for example or because he doubts the diagnosis and wants to cheat. But you'll have assured that he is healthy and his growth isn't impaired in the meantime...
  9. I think your 2yo is lucky. My son had some GI symptoms, dental enamel defects, delayed growth/puberty, recurring mouth sores. He was 15, had a bone age of 12 and weighed only 95 pounds (and had weighed 92 at age 12). He didn't notice any immediate improvements, but what he said broke my heart: "I never realized that eating wasn't supposed to hurt....
  10. Yeah, I read your post this morning and thought...I bet a $20 bill that she's pregnant and ...you are! Congrats! I hope that your morning sickness is less now that you're gluten free. Glad DH laughed and best wishes to all four of you!
  11. Do you have low blood sugar problems at any other time? Like if you don't eat and miss a meal, do you get lightheaded then? What do you have for breakfast? A balanced breakfast (protein, sugar/carb, fat) and waiting a bit to drive might help. Being gluten-free/DF calls for more creative ideas for b'fast. Maybe gluten-free cereal with almond milk and...
  12. I just saw this other thread and remembered that you are in Texas. There's a discussion about gluten-free in the cafes at U of Texas: HTH
  13. Dr. Green's book is good but for a guide: "Living Gluten Free for Dummies" is the best I've read for a primer. You can get a copy for about $13 or borrow from your public library. The other posters are right...a colonoscopy won't diagnose celiac, only an endoscopy can do that (assuming you're still eating enough gluten and have enough damage to find...
  14. Sorry you got sick. I don't eat potluck items any more or eat at other's houses except my sister's, my parent's and my parents-in-law. When I have potlucks or go to them, I only eat what I brought and I eat it first, before anyone else can stick the noodle-spoon into the rice casserole! It IS somewhat limiting, but most people never notice what I'm doing...
  15. My celiac son is a 17yo HS Senior too and my daughter is a college student, so we have some experience. Many colleges MAKE you buy the meal plan if you live in the dorms and even though you may not be able to eat much or any of the food. This could mean an extra $4000 a year, which is a rip off. As a parent, I don't want to pay that much! Even if you...
  16. Hi GFQ and welcome. First, I'll say that I'm not an expert but here's my advice. It looks like gluten could be a problem for you (either celiac or "just" gluten intolerant). You, as I was/am, might be psychologically or physiologically "addicted" to gluten. There is some info that wheat and/or carbs up the seratonin level, mimicking drugs like opiates...
  17. Sorry to hear about your double-whammy...just dealing with celiac is enough for one person! I know nothing about autoimmune hepatitis, except to say that auto-immune diseases run in packs, so if you have one - like celiac- you're at a higher risk for another. What are you eating? Perhaps if you post what you're eating, some folks can help. I would...
  18. Congratulations! You should be proud, and I hope you can enjoy DD's wedding. ~Laura
  19. Try magnesium. I feel a lot better when I take it. Plus, it has a laxative effect at higher doses. Start out small, add more to see if it has that effect for you. I use Nature Made, gluten-free and dairy-free.
  20. I'm not a scientist or doctor but my understanding is that since the lining of the small intestine is damaged, it does not absorb nutrients, vitamins and fats as it normally should. This can cause diarrhea, constipation, vitamin deficiencies, weight loss, weight gain, metabolism changes and other symptoms of malnutrition: Any or all of these can by symptoms...
  21. I would suggest no tortillas or corn chips. Corn on the cob would be fine. Ordinarily, I would say that most canned corn or frozen corn are going to be safe. But you may be looking for 99.999% certainty that you are eating gluten-free. So that to me means very little that has been "processed" by humans or machinery. Sweet potatoes and white potatoes...
  22. Hello and welcome, The questions of weight, over/underweight and weight loss/gain are tricky. I think the "classic" celiac loses lots of weight before diagnosis, gets very sick and needs to gain weight back. Others, like me, are among the 40% of newly diagnosed celiacs who are overweight. Some of us can lose weight easily --others can't. My dietician...
  23. No, please don't go back to eating gluten! Your later tests were negative because you were off gluten. If you are Marsh I (as I was) you do have celiac, but your damage is less than others (that's a good thing). In my opinion, if your docs can't find anything else, you just have a messed up system and it will get better soon. After diagnosis, I couldn...
  24. Yes, that's what I would suggest for you and for anyone still having symptoms. Eat only at home, no restaurant meals or meals at friends' houses (sad I know), no crackers or gluten-free goodies or flours or rice. Eat whole foods - lettuce, spinach, other veggies, fresh fruit (not dried unless you dry it yourself), whole potatoes (no french fries), sweet...
  25. Yeah, no manicotti, ravioli or lasagne, but that is to be expected. Otherwise most of their pasta dishes were available. And the penne was good.
