  1. I had negative blood tests but positive for intestinal damage. Others have positive blood tests but negative biopsies. It's difficult because neither the blood test nor the biopsy are 100% accurate. The blood test is not very sensitive. Biopsies are "hit and miss". My blood was still negative, so I guess I'd have to have a follow-up endoscopy...
  2. (((HUGS)))) to you. Your first post! What your doctor said, that's what my doctor said too, and I never went back to her. I cried too. Have you had your thyroid tested? That can be why you aren't losing weight and it can be related to celiac, as they are both autoimmune diseases. My thyroid is OK, though I wish there was a magic pill to help...
  3. Isn't that funny, I am always so hungry when I've been glutened. What is the mechanism for that? I'm usually nauseous but I can't understand why I'm hungry.
  4. I've had symptoms of Sjogren's for about 6 months now and Reynauds symptoms for a few years that come and go. I have not been tested for either. The Reynaud's seemed to get better going gluten-free. The Sjogren's seemed to come after going gluten-free, but now the symptoms are much less than a few months ago. My theory is that gluten aggravates the...
  5. Hmm... not sure why the quote function got messed up...sorry! I'm so glad you had a good night's sleep! After I started taking magnesium, I stopped a lot of little annoying symptoms that I had around diagnosis, like blood rushing sound in my ears (weird) and anxiety spikes. Both of these are Nature Made brand vitamins...I like this brand as it is...
  6. I'm another who could never lose weight pre-diagnosis and was always hungy. I gained 20 pounds in the two years immediately prior to diagnois. I haven't been able to lose much since going gluten-free and have about 25-30 to lose. I'm still hungry now, all the time, though I think it may just be psychological. I'm addicted to eating and I think that I always...
  7. I got canker sores ~ weekly for 20 years. Since going gluten-free I've had 3 or 4, only after an accidental glutening. My son also used to get them...he once got one with a few minutes of eating gluten, which was the final straw for me and he went gluten-free shortly thereafter. I've also had the water blisters develop on contact w/in 15 minutes of...
  8. I also take this tablet, twice a day. And I don't take it within an hour of having caffeine. Not sure if that's really true but I try to be safe. Diagnosed with osteopenia at 48. I really want to avoid Boniva etc., as I've read about the side effects. It might be ok, but then again I'd rather be safe than sorry. Also, I read that anyone who...
  9. Are you sure that your son isn't casein intolerant too or instead of just lactose intolerant? My son is casein intolerant and lactaid helps a little bit but not much. There is no solution (other than avoidance) for anyone who is intolerant of the casein protein instead of the lactose.
  10. I'm in Bridle Trails part of Kirkland, used to live on Finn Hill.
  11. This is a great article...pages 73-76. Suprising disorders that cause fatigue...celiac, thyroid and depression. Also, it lists Low Vit B, Low Vit D and Prescriptions/OTC drugs. This is a funny article to me because celiac is known to cause vitamin deficiencies and depression (both in my case) and thyroid disorders sometimes go hand in hand with...
  12. I don't think you're jumping the gun. And yes, I would keep her off gluten until she is 18 even if the doc's tests are negative. I guess the question is...What do you want the pediatrician to do? Is she generally healthy otherwise? Pediatricians and doctors in general will not look kindly on Enterolab, unless you get really lucky. I did not discuss...
  13. Glad to find people to talk to about this...best to you and your kids.
  14. You're welcome. My daughter is actually going to attend UNC in the fall, so I'll be there a lot. It was her first trip down South (I was raised in Alabama) and she wanted to experience real Southern food. She begged me to go to Mama Dips and I was skeptical, but it was wonderful. A real treat. Travelling is getting easier for me... ~Laura
  15. I just got back from North Carolina. We ate at several places: Uno's Pizza at the Raleigh restaurant -- perfect two times Mama Dips in Chapel Hill -- great Southern/soul food on Rosemary Street (behind Franklin) in area right by the UNC campus. I had the barbeque pork, black-eyed peas and broccoli and vanilla ice cream for desert. The sweet southern...
  16. I ate twice at the Uno's in Raleigh, North Carolina. Excellent pizza and I didn't get sick. It's about five minutes from the Raleigh/Durham airport.
  17. My son will kill me for talking about this so if any of you know me IRL, don't mention it to him... He was 15 and had not entered puberty. We decided to go gluten-free (see my sig below) and after four months gluten-free/CF he went into puberty at 15.3 years. It could be a coincidence but I don't think so. His bone age at 15 was 12.5, so that means...
  18. Age 48 I believe that I had first symptoms at 17. Started getting arthritis pain, and was tentatively diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Had terrible stomach cramps (writhing on the floor) two-three times a week, mainly after eating big meals-- I thought it was stress or eating too much. Other symptoms were frequent big D, depression, arthritis...
  19. Valerie, I can only tell you my experience and that is that the first three months or so being gluten free, almost anything made me nauseous. Cheese (all dairy), fatty foods, big meals, all that needed to be avoided. What I did (after I figured it out...) was to cut out dairy, eat very little- small meals frequently, not greasy. I would avoid all outside...
  20. This sounds unbelievable, but I get symptoms within 5-15 minutes. I sometimes eat just a few bites and wait just a few minutes (if I'm eating out or food that I didn't cook myself) and then I can stop if it makes me ill. My immediate symptoms are burping, nausea, stomach noises (actually my stomach makes noises but feels like there's a wild animal inside...
  21. Thanks I was just going to post this. I'm going to Duke and UNC for daughter's college trip next week (she's been admitted to UNC and will hear from Duke 3/26 this thursday!). ~Laura
  22. Hi Mom, If you want a non-pill solution, how about the Mirena? It's an IUD for women who've had kids before. It works really well. Most insurance plans cover it but if they don't it is usually cheaper than 5 years of pills. Plus it's more effective and you don't have to take the pill every day, and no chance of gluten. FWIW I'm convinced that my...
  23. Jen, I don't have any magic words for you, I wish I did. I have heard that numbers take a long time to go down in some people (my bloodwork was and is negative) so that part should worry you less. It took a lot of gluten to get you there and will take some time to fix it. Having said that, I *thought* I was gluten-free for 18 months and only found...
  24. Givenupgluten, I'm sorry you are having these issues. I think some of this may get better the longer you're off gluten. I too have anxiety issues and they are much better but I'm approaching my 2nd anniversary of being gluten-free. But if I have a hard day at work and something goes wrong or if I am - say - late for an important appointment, I will have...
  25. Mee Three! I had been diagnosed with Degenereative Disk Disease in my low back. If I did yoga daily I would have less pain but usually took ibuprofen every day for the pain. That (along with my plantar faciitis) went away within a month of going gluten free. Mine doesn't come back with mild glutenings and I haven't (knock on wood) had a major glutening...
