  1. It might also help with skin conditions to eliminate wheat from your dog's diet!
  2. Start taking Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium like the PP said, plus take Vitamin B12 "sublingual" (under the tongue). You can find sublingual B12 at healthfood stores, just make sure all of these are gluten-free. For D, magnesium and calcium I use Nature Made. For sublingual B12 I use Trader Joe's. Celiacs are deficient in these vitaminus (usually...
  3. My first incident like this is what sent me to the doctor and lead to my diagnosis. I didn't faint but I did think I was dying. The antiemetic pill sounds like your best bet. And you may not be able to eat out or want to eat out, which is a real shame. My reaction is immediate, like at the table I start getting nauseous and I start burping, so I...
  4. Thanks Mushroom and Janet. I know that people here understand the frustration... Yes, Janet we joke saying that my son needs to gain the 30 pounds that I need to lose. He just this month got consistently over 100 pounds. He's been between 94 and 98 for 3 years. His doc says that's ok but I don't agree. My GI doc is just ok, though...
  5. I had my GI follow-up (yearly) today and my GI asked about my son. I was pleased that he remembered or at least that he had it in his notes. I explained that his blood test was negative, he hadn't gone into puberty at age 15, that he had the celiac gene and that as a result we had my son go gluten-free/dairy-free. Then I told the doc that my son, after...
  6. Yes, wear gloves. BUT, wear a respirator (like housepainters wear) or at least a paper dust mask. When I cleaned my kitchen, I didn't do this -although my husband suggested it - and later got sick and wished I had. Wheat particles float and get in your mouth/nose. ~Laura
  7. I've seen a study....not sure where. You might do a search on the Related Disorders section or on the Home page of celiac.com Ok I just checked and I'm back.... https://www.celiac.com/categories/Celiac-Di...-and-Disorders/ if you haven't looked at this already. ~Laura
  8. Welcome! I am diagnosed and I was 30-35 overweight at diagnosis. I was always hungry and ate to fill my stomach to make it feel better. Your doctor is wrong about a lot...I think there is a study posted that about 30% of those diagnosed w/celiac are overweight at the time of diagnosis. My dietician explained that my body thought it was starving, not...
  9. Most chocolate has milk, except for SOME types of dark chocolate, so peanut M&Ms are out if you want to avoid dairy. I second the flourless PB cookies. Avoiding gluten-free baked replacements (that have alternative flours in them) early on in the process helps healing and makes the healing easier.
  10. I agree...eat plain white rice, plain cooked chicken, hamburger or turkey. Cooked plain veggies (no raw veggies or frut), very little oil. Eat small amounts slowly. Maybe some applesauce. Try hot mint tea. I use Trader Joes Mint Medley or The Republic of Tea Mint Fields Organic Herb Tea which has spearmint, peppermint and (my favorite cure) Lemon...
  11. Generic, I am sending you a PM. ~Laura
  12. How about chopped macadamia nuts or chopped pecans? I always put nuts in my stuesel topping. And you could put flax in whatever flour you use for extra fiber to mimic the whole wheat flour perhaps... I've also used the quinoa flakes in my apple crisp and struesel toppings, although now I use gluten-free oats. They're controversial and not for...
  13. Sorry about the disaster... goes with the territory, I guess. I really like pumpkin pie without the crust. I would do that, except my darling son likes eating "normal" pie. The press-in crust was good, while the other crust I made for the apple galate wasn't very good at all.
  14. This is the first year subbing for dairy at Thanksgiving. I experimented and made a small portion of the Libby's recipe with coconut milk and a portion with evaporated milk for a taste test. The coconut milk version was even BETTER than the original. The recipe calls for 12 oz. of evaporated milk, but I used about 8-9 ounces of coconut milk. However...
  15. Sorghum is the best replacement, IMHO. Or you could try almond meal if it is a small percentage of the total flour. I find it gives a good flavor and some fiber and protein.
  16. Motherof6, Wow! What a reaction! Ken and everyone gave good advice. I hope she can persevere, because we need more celiac-knowledgeable/friendly dieticians! She probably needs to wear a respirator at all times in these types of kitchen/classrooms. They sell face-mask respirators for use in asbestos removal or for use with bad chemical fumes
  17. This was my mother my ENTIRE childhood. I used to swear that I would never embarass my children like that....yup, another dream squashed. And yet, she refuses to think my celiac is from her side of the family (Type I diabetes in her dad ) or that she could have it. Perhaps it is from both (some type of abdominal cancer from the other grandfather). ...
  18. I STRONGLY agree with this - all first degree relatives should be tested anyway, but especially with carb cravings. I was the original carb addict and could have eaten only pizza and french bread all day long, everyday. And for the health of one daughter, the other (and other family members) might have to give up gluten at home in order to get the celiac...
  19. The only thing I can find is Wikipedia, and it's a bit over my head. Open Original Shared Link At 15, I hope he is past the age to get diabetes, but I am in the dark about it. His doc said not to worry. Take care and i hope your son is better son. ~Laura
  20. It looks like you've got some good docs and they are testing for the right things. When will you get answers? My grandfather was Type I and my son has the gene for it but has not developed diabetes to this point. Did you have any gene testing done? ~Laura
  21. Here's some info from NIH Open Original Shared Link The immunologic process that leads to type 1 diabetes can begin years before the symptoms of type 1 diabetes develop. Symptoms become apparent when most of the beta-cell population is destroyed and develop over a short period of time. Early symptoms, which are mainly due to hyperglycemia, include increased...
  22. Right, I haven't let him have any soy since he went diary free (except a little in margarine for baking) because it's so bad for developing males. He eats well, he's just not getting enough calories to gain weight. This is not to replace beef or other good protein, but as a supplement. Since he doesn't get any milk, he can't have a quick glass at breakfast...
  23. Do you have a brand that you like? That's what I'm trying to find out... ~Laura
  24. My son REALLY needs to gain weight. We need a protein powder that is gluten-free/DF and not soy-based (it's ok if it has a little but not too much, as soy isn't good for males in puberty). I don't want to spend a lot of money on one that tastes yucky. Rice powder, hemp powder? Any ideas? Thanks in advance. ~Laura
  25. Thank you...although my to-do list doesn't need anything else added to it. ~Laura
