  1. Good points. I agree with most of this. I can see both sides because I was diagnosed with celiac but my son (and my sister and brother) were not. My son wouldn't go gluten-free without some "proof" and his dad nixed the endoscopy because of the risks. So I was between a rock and a hard place. I spent my own money willingly on Enterolab to get proof...
  2. Do you eat cheese? I would bring a plate of cheese (cut up) and crackers and fruit (like grapes, orange sections) on a disposable plate covered with plastic wrap. Or in a Ziploc disposable container. Park it at your table during appetizer portion then eat. If you don't eat cheese, just bring baggies with nuts, fruits, veggies in your purse and put them...
  3. Janet, what do you put in your chicken feed? Where do you buy it? ~Laura
  4. I have both chickens and horses and now also use a mask and gloves everytime I'm in the barn. I kept getting "mystery" glutenings before I started using the mask. I put the mask on first, before gloves, barn coat, boots etc., and then reverse the process and take the mask off last and immediately wash my hands. I don't ride though, so I don't know...
  5. Raven, great points! My GI told me that since I "only" had Marsh 1 (no villi destruction but changes at the cellular level) that I only had a "mild" case of celiac and wouldn't have to be as careful. Nuts to that. Then my son's GI said that since I "only" had Marsh 1, that some docs don't even consider that I have celiac and that made it unlikely that...
  6. I have horses and chickens. Their feed contains wheat, rye, barley, oats. So I wear a dust mask and am very careful. I wash my hands after taking off my barn jacket and gloves and I'm careful not to touch my mouth or nose. I'm still worried about it... If you are out in the fields a lot, that would be a problem in my mind.
  7. More lunch ideas for Picky Eater's daughter. (P.S. Let us know how it goes....thanks) I use the wide mouth thermos jars too for school lunches. I heat them up with tap water first, then put boiling water in and let it sit for 5 minutes while I heat the food. This way the food stays hot for 4-5 hours, not just tepid. Maybe homemade lasagna would...
  8. Hi Picky-Eater, That's great that they caught your daughter's celiac early....I know some Diabetes docs test automatically- wonderful. And it should make it easier to control her blood sugar if she is gluten-free too, from what I've read. My son was resistant to going gluten-free/CF but he is not growing and wants to very badly so that is a good...
  9. I'm not familiar with the 123 Bars so I can't help you there. However, you should be able to make a pie with canned sweet potatoes (or cooked, mashed sweetpotato- cook with a little maple syrup and/or water) using your old pumpkin pie recipie. My mom used to do that when I was a kid. Look for canned sweetpotatoes in your grocery store. ~Laura
  10. My son is gluten-free, dairy-free. You gotta try this: Open Original Shared Link I make it with almond milk (instead of milk and sour cream) and it turns out fine. It's great in a square or round 8inch pan. I also use it for hamburger buns - it's the only hamburger bun recipie worth making and it only takes 20 minutes. (I use a muffin-top baking...
  11. Hi Tracy, I had celiac symptoms beginning from about age 17 (I'm 48 now) but no doctor ever worried. I had bloating, D, gas, all daily. I also had mouth ulcers at least monthly, joint pain, and developed anxiety and low-level depression. About 3 years before diagnosis, I started feeling worse and told the docs about the bloating, so they checked me...
  12. Hi Tracy, Regarding the chances of having celiac with your results, I can only offer my experience. I found out that I had celiac from a biopsy first, with the blood test - which was negative - done afterward. So you can definitely have celiac but have nothing zip nada show up in your blood work. There are others here with similar results. My doctor...
  13. Has she been checked for Diabetes? Bad breath and fatigue are two symptoms and diabetes and celiac are often found together. (My son has one gene that is shared for both diabetes Type 1 and celiac) "Symptoms. The immunologic process that leads to type 1 diabetes can begin years before the symptoms of type 1 diabetes develop. Symptoms become apparent when...
  14. And I forgot to say that all of the above symptoms are now mostly gone.
  15. Miss V, Yep, sounds familiar. Internal tremors when dozing off to sleep.. YES Acute anxeity when dozing off to sleep. YES Fluctuations in blood pressure.. YES The feeling of pressure, like something was going to burst out of my chest at any moment.(like tonight) Yes Joint pains. Bone pains. YES and YES Irregular periods ( my whole life) No...
  16. Nick, sorry about your friend. H**** beat me to it but there may be a connnection (although I believe that the IgG that they test for in celiac is a different test than that for myeloma). Here's a link to some info that I posted before. Open Original Shared Link As you can see, I also have a connection to myeloma, as my husband is in the early stages...
  17. This is the BEST pizza recipe, hands down. I pre-bake it (not too brown), flash freeze it. Then I use the foodsaver to get the air out (or you could squeeze the air out of a ziplock freezer bag). When I'm ready to use it then I cook it --without thawing with sauce and cheese. ~Laura
  18. Pedialyte is a great idea... or gatorade mixed half-n-half with water. ~Laura
  19. Thanks Lisa. I don't have a problem with blood pressure and I don't seem to react to dairy with obvious symptoms. However, I am having a terrible time losing weight and my son is casein intolerant, so I started today eliminating dairy. I want to see what happens and it's easy to do since he is GFDF. I need to start being more strict on carbs and see...

    ARCHIVED What Would You Do?

I agree with that, of course. I'd much rather have celiac. But my point was that some celiacs are as sick as people that have cancer. And some cancers are treatable and some are not. Many celiacs don't get answers or treatment, because it's a different disease process. For the individual patient, celiac should be treated as seriously as a doctor...

    ARCHIVED What Would You Do?

In my experience, they call you. And docs that don't call in the case of cancer diagnoses, get sued and lose. And a lot of us here would say that celiac is (or is almost) as bad as cancer. ~Laura

    ARCHIVED What Would You Do?

While I agree that the patient "should" follow-up, I have to wonder if the GP referred the patient to the GI. The OP said that the GP didn't get the report. If that is true, the GI doc was at fault for not sending the report to the GP. Referring docs should ALWAYS get the results back, and the docs should be communicating with each other. Recently...
  23. Lisa, that sounds like a good diet. Did your dietician give you a website or handout? Does the diet have a name? I've been toying with the idea of giving up dairy... and I need to lose 20-40 pounds. ~Laura
  24. This has become a favorite of mine. I mixed up a 4-batch mix of the dry ingredients, and so I only have to spoon out what I need. I usually make a half-recipe and make it on my large muffin pan, which makes 2 rolls the size for hamburger buns. I really got tired of eating a bunless burger when others are eating buns, especially during summer cookout season...
  25. Oh, jjtj, how horrible! For the suicide possiblity, I'm not qualified to help on that but please contact one of her doctors or the crisis clinic in your area. That is too risky to leave to chance. How long was she on the diet? Please tell her that it DOES work, but it takes, usually, at least a month and sometimes more to feel better. The rate of...
