    ARCHIVED Great Dr In Seattle

    Aleshia, Thank you! ~Laura
  2. I have a cookbook that has many recipes with diabetic adjustments (no-sugar, reduced carb). It's called the Wheat Free, Gluten-Free Cookbook for Kids and Busy Adults by Connie Sarros. ~Laura
  3. Making a bet is a GREAT idea, especially for guys! Use the month to teach him the tricks of eating gluten-free. It reminds me of this recent article Open Original Shared Link I hope it works! ~Laura
  4. It's so nice not to be the only one. My celiac belly (or just my fat) makes me feel so embarrassed. I am working on not feeling bad because I'm overweight. Walking or riding my bike daily helps me feel energetic. I've started the grain-free diet and I feel more in control, although I'm still hungry all the time. I'm filling up on leafy greens, and using...
  5. I have been meaning to post the same question. I have a recipe that calls for egg and wheat flour. I was going to substitute potato starch for some of the flour and brown rice flour for the rest and yes, I was going to try it with the x-gum to help it hold together better. I'll post after I try and if anyone else has any suggestions, that would be...
  6. Mint tea is what I use, and I second the use of honey in it. Peppermint, spearmint or lemon balm are all good teas. Chamomile is good UNLESSS one is allergic to ragweed, a common allergen (as I am). It can also cause vomiting if you drink too much. ~Laura
  7. Frozen Amy's are good, but expensive and limited. Try some of these: Tasty Bite Indian curry (comes ready-to-eat in pouches with or without precooked rice). These are vegitarian so add some cooked leftover chicken, shrimp or perhaps turkey lunchmeat. Thai Kitchen noodles- Pad Thai, noodle soup etc. Add chopped peanuts, veggies (bean sprouts, snow...
  8. Hi Strawberry, This is difficult. The MD is an adult and whether or not he chooses to follow the gluten-free diet is his concern. Your daughter is a child and has a lot of growing to do. As an adult she could choose not to or choose TO follow the diet. Going to a ROCK group is a good idea. Going to a nutritionist is a good idea. Depending on...
  9. frec is right. Trader joe's gluten-free brownie mix is wonderful and half the price of Bob's Red Mill or gluten-free pantry mix and it's dairy free too. I mix in 1/2 cup of Gluten-free Casein-free chocolate chips. I even fed it to the soccer team and no one cared or knew. I too have guacamole, rice and beans at the local Mexican restaurant with no...
  10. My understanding is that the TSA prohibits liquids or gels and won't allow the pouches in the cabin. I could be wrong. But they still have the rule that you can only carry on 2 ounces of shampoo. Baby formula and some other required medicines are exempt. I don't think they'd make an exemption for celiacs because we can always eat crackers or Lara bars...
  11. That's a great solution - love it! I took a lot of Tasty Bite curry (pre-made, just heat and eat curry with rice pouches), Thai Kitchen noodles (Pad Thai, noddle soup etc), Lara Bars, Progresso Wild Rice soup, Bush's Baked Beans and some crackers. Buy some gluten-free turkey lunchmeat, cream cheese, Peanut Butter and cheese sticks from the grocery when...
  12. Gardenburger's Black bean & chipotle veggie burgers are good, especially with melted cheese on top. Last time I checked they were gluten-free. ~Laura
  13. It's usually the enchilada sauce that gets you. I usually have a shell-less tostada or taco salad. No chips, cause they are usually fried in the same oil as the wheat-tortilla burritos/chalupas. Try this site for free language cards. Read the english one to see what it says. Open Original Shared Link ~Laura
  14. Dragonsrebel, I, too, have never heard that weaning is beneficial. However, some people do have "gluten withdrawal" symptoms (not me) which are various but include flu-like symptoms, moodiness, headaches etc. You could look around the board for others' experiences. But I'm not sure weaning yourself slowly would be a way to avoid gluten withdrawal...
  15. Yes, thanks Celiac Mom. Your son four years ago is almost identical to my son now. And as Joy asked, how long til he started to grow and/or start puberty?
  16. I was continuously glutened by the microwave at work and ours at home. Any time I use it, I make sure to use a lid or cover it with plastic wrap or a silicone top. I do wrap tortillas in paper towels and the same for pre-cooked bacon. Just to be safe, I'd always cover food. ~Laura
  17. Annap, I'm glad you got new meds and also that you got a referral and more testing. I hope it helps but if not keep looking. ~Laura
  18. Hi Joy, my son turned 15 yesterday. He went gluten free after researching it and finding out that celiac may be the cause of his lack of growth, both height and maturity. He really fell off the growth curve and doesn't want to be shorter than his sister (who is 5'9" at age 17) for the rest of his life. His dad is 6'2". Does your son realize that going...
  19. Amy, good for you! Your son is very lucky to have you as a Mom! I wish that I could say that my son has a firm diagnosis, although in the short run it doesn't matter. He agreed to go gluten free for now, and hope that he starts growing without problems. I've told him that when he is 18, he can eat wheat and then do the blood test and/or biopsy, if that...
  20. I gained 30 pounds in the 2 years immediately prior to diagnosis. I was always hungry and did eat 3 slices of bread, three helpings of pasta and was still hungry. I had D daily but was still gaining weight even though I worked out. After diagnosis, my dietitian said that I gained weight because my body thought it was starving and held on to every calorie...
  21. SherrieD, We had a variation on your problem. My son wanted a true reason to go gluten free, but my hubby refused to let him do an endoscopy. My son also didn't have noticeable symptoms. We tested through enterolab and agreed with my son beforehand that if it was positive (even just for the celiac gene) that he would go gluten free. It was and he...
  22. Annap, I hope you have good luck tomorrow. Write back and let us know what happens. ~laura
  23. It sounds like you are being proactive about the gluten-free diet. Do the pictures that I posted look like your daughter's teeth? ~Laura
  24. When I was 29, I had a herniated cervical (neck) disc ( C 5/6) that ruptured and caused paralysis and foot drop. I had a C 5/6 discectomy and fusion surgery where they remove the disc and replace it with bone - in my case, from my hip, The bone then mends - like a broken bone- to fuse the neck and replace the disc. Major heavy-duty surgery. My doc said...
  25. I swear by hot peppermint and/or spearmint tea. Very soothing and gets rid of my nausea. Or lemon balm tea if you can find it. Mint is an ancient remedy for upset stomach.
