  1. I had tried to train for a run/walk marathon (or half) but would always get foot pain diagnosed as plantar faciitis. So I gave it up and switched to some walking and some biking. Right before I was diagnosed I had a flare-up just from walking. After I went gluten-free, the pain disappeared that same week with no treatment, and I've never had a problem...
  2. Here's a short answer: Rice Krispies have gluten (in the malt flavoring I believe) and are a no-no. Granola almost certainly has gluten (oats usually have gluten- that's the quick answer. The full answer is longer.) Chinese Chicken Salad is suspect, as most soy sauce and many Chinese sauces have gluten. Some people also react to soy. Many, many...
  3. Ellen, I read the above and almost jumped out of my chair! I've never seen or heard such a link. I did a google search and found lots of information. My hubby has been diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy (MGUS) but his now appears to be growing and may turn into multiple myeloma, a terrible fate. Given the odds at his age (48) he has a good chance...
  4. I have suspected that my son (almost 15) was not healthy for about 3 years now. Mother's intuition, I suppose, but he just had too many infections, colds etc. And he fell off the growth chart- had previously been 75th percentile for height and weight and dropped to below 25th. At my request, the pediatrician tested him for diabetes, kidney problems, leukemia...
  5. Norcalballa, You do have a lot to vent about and certainly you have had a rough time. I hope your health and energy come back totally and quickly. My son is almost 15 and was just diagnosed officially today, although I've been certain he was celiac for about 6 months now. Your case is exactly what I am trying to avoid for him by getting a diagnosis...
  6. I agree with every word Ursa says except the single line above. As I said above, there are many successful celiacs who are vegetarians. You might try sending a message to some of the following members who are vegetarian/vegan: MySuicidalTurtle, Bully4You, hathor, ItchyMeredith Also, here's a great blog with recipes but also other great hints. Karina...
  7. On a whim, I bought the Whole Foods 365 White Bread mix because it was $1.50 cheaper than Pamela's. I've never had success with Pamela's -- or ANY bread recipe or mix yet. I've tried Lorka's and others and the bread still falls and is yukky ( no offense to Lorka). So I bought a new pan- somewhat smaller (about 7x4) and it is a metal pan SPECIFICALLY...
  8. Hi FatCat, I am Italian too and yes it is hard! I used to say that I could eat pizza, pasta or lasagna every day of the week and never get tired of it. Oh, well. Rice pasta tastes almost as good as regular wheat and if you use good homemade sauce you can't tell - or barely. Also, there is quinoa pasta too that is good with heavier sauces. They also...
  9. You could try either the South Beach Diet or the Paleo diet. Both can be done easily gluten free. Some people here say Weight Watchers is easy to do. You might have your thyroid tested too when you see the doctor. That is sometimes the cause of not losing weight. Regarding the stomach issues, you could also have other intolerances - soy, dairy...
  10. We use Trader Joe's Gummi Vites for Kids. The label says no wheat, gluten, milk, eggs, tree nuts, soy, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. My son likes the taste.
  11. This has been my experience too.... though I do miss the Naan! My favorite! But I have a new recipe to try making it myself.
  12. Can someone tell me how you can get a gluten-free pizza free from CC in a regular wheat-pizza place? I just don't see how it is possible, although I am definitely going to check out Foley's next time I visit my sister.
  13. There is another current thread on a forum here about "growing pains". I had growing pains at night as a kid, as did other posters. It could be from gluten, it's a possibility.
  14. I think it might be a symptom of late pregnancy or starting of labor, so maybe hormonal. See this: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link If you have any other signs of labor, you should call your doc right away. Otherwise, you should ask at the next office visit.
  15. I'm certainly no medical expert but I would say 1) have your naturopath check all your vitamin and mineral levels. Iron, Vit D, Folic, B12, Calcium -- what else am I forgetting? If you are told that all your levels are higher than minimum then you can be pretty sure that you are absorbing nutrients. 2) Do you have any other damage (neurological, headaches...
  16. I don't eat out very much and I do the same thing as others say here - like Lara bars in my purse, almonds in the glove compartment etc. But Chipotle's has been good for me. I've researched them here on the Restaurant forum and called them. I have a burrito bowl with rice, salsa, grilled onions and peppers plus beef or pork. Then I ask them to change...
  17. Cheryl, I'm sorry you're in pain. Do you mean Cushing's Disease? Wow, that plus celiac is a lot to handle and I think Cushing's is more rare than celiac, and I have no idea how they treat it, so I can't help there. Just like celiac, you have to keep at the doctors and keep being the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. Find a Cushing's expert (try...
  18. Northernsunshine, Welcome to the Club! I had a positive biopsy first then negative blood tests. i had exactly the same symptoms that you did and was also scoped for an ulcer- the doc took biopsies just to be on the safe side and boy am I happy he did. I didn't have flattened villi, only changes at the cellular level but I wouldn't want to risk waiting...
  19. Twinflame2, I would agree with Momma Goose and would not do things like liver cleanses when your health is so fragile. Focus on whole foods, made by you at home with few ingredients. In this early period, you might want to avoid eating out or at other people's houses. Perhaps you could add a gluten-free probiotic and some gluten-free vitamins like magnesium...
  20. I have read (I think it was a PubMed article) that for SOME celiacs, being gluten-free resolved some or most of their thyroid problems. Do a google search with the terms hashimoto's and/or hypothyroid plus PubMed. Here's one study: Open Original Shared Link And this: Open Original Shared Link Good luck! ~Laura
  21. I am on the other side of the country, but if you need Baltimore, you are very lucky Open Original Shared Link Dr. Fasano is there and the center is supposed to be good. ~Laura
  22. Hi FatCat, you have gotten some good advice. I'm not vegetarian, but there are several people who post here regularly who are (there are even some gluten-free vegans, so it can be done and done in a healthy way). So you don't have to start eating meat/fish etc., although it might give you some more variety. You might try sending a message to some...
  23. I was diagnosed 2/12/07 and went gluten free a year ago today. I could NEVER have done it without you wonderful people. Truly, you all were lifesavers. I had many tests, a few mistakes along the way and a did a lot of learning. I'm very happy that I am basically healthy and that there is nothing else (major) wrong with me and my health. I think I...
