  1. That's a really cute, fun story! ~Laura
  2. Are you newly diagnosed? When I was newly diagnosed, I would have D and try to find out what it was. Some of it was CC, like crumbs on the counter etc. Later I realized that it was either 1) just too much food at once (which if you're eating a big sandwich, that could be it) or 2) eating too much fat. As my husband said, not every stomach ache is caused...
  3. Hi Writerspice, welcome! It does, sometimes, get worse after going gluten free before getting better. Hang in there. I also got stomach cramps/weird pains after going gluten free but they are mostly gone now. McCormicks' spices are always gluten free (or they will say that they are not gluten-free on the label). I use their chili powder and...
  4. Like Hathor, I won't comment on what I don't know, hopefully others will chime in. Yes, some of the gluten free recipes have no fiber and are very much filled with refined carbs, which would mess up most people's sugar levels, especially diabetics. Whenever I bake gluten free, I add ground flax meal or ground almonds to replace flour. The almond meal...
  5. Sarah, I found this link on another thread and thought about you and Erza. The relevant article is on page 10, Unexpected Mortality Increase in celiac disease. Part of the article is bad news (sorry!) but one part specifically applies to Erza; a doctor states that he is positive that gluten can be "responsible for psychiatric effects in children as young...
  6. lilgreen, It's a hard situation and I hope you can fix it soon for your DS's sake. Someone I read here said that they keep a dozen cooked gluten-free cupcakes in the freezer. When their kid has to go to a birthday party, they pull out the cupcake, frost it with premade frosting (Betty Crocker vanilla is gluten-free, I believe) add some gluten-free...
  7. Yep, a constant occurrence prior to diagnosis, only when glutened now. I used to have to carry baby wipes with me in my wallet everywhere I went!
  8. I was glutened by cleaning out my flour/wheat bread cupboard! When I started doing it, my hubby asked if I wanted his respirator. But, I foolishly said "no" and paid for it later that night. I had not eaten anything suspicious that day and had nothing to eat or drink right before the symptoms started. But, at least the cupboard is clean now. That being...
  9. NChick, Yes, I tested negative on TTG. I had the endoscopy first because my doc thought that my symptoms were an ulcer. The endo found no ulcer but the doc took biopsy samples while he was there (Thankfully!) and the diagnosis fit all my weird symptoms. The endoscopy is not much to worry about. You can't eat or drink for 9-12 hours ahead of time...
  10. Hi Brooke, If your brother (first-degree blood relative) is a diagnosed celiac, I would push your doc for an endoscopy if you want a diagnosis. However, even if that is negative, try the diet. I had negative blood tests, positive biopsy so that may happen to you. Or you just might not have enough damage yet to show positive. If you read people's stories...
  11. Here's mine...I had pumpkin muffins with chocolate chips at Starbucks prior to diagnosis, so I knew I'd love the taste. You could leave out the chocolate chips and add nuts instead. Gluten-free Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins 3 eggs 1 tablespoon gluten-free mayo 1-1/4 cups canned pumpkin 1/2 cup butter, melted 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips...
  12. I buy Lara Bars at the local grocery stores and drug stores, Krogers/Fred Meyer, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. They are with the protein bars, have lots of flavors. In fact, I gave some to my friend's daughter, who has celiac, two days before I was diagnosed. I thought celiac was only diagnosed during childhood. HA!
  13. Now, that made me cry! I hope he's better soon. ~Laura
  14. Same with me! I used to go to business breakfasts and be the one who went back for seconds of bagels, croissants, muffins. (Can you say "addicted"?) Now I go and get the best strawberries, grapes and melons. And go back for seconds of the fruit. I also go to potlucks and watch other people eat and I'm not even tempted. But I do make muffins to...
  15. Hi Kid, If you're sure that the ice cream was gluten free (and nothing else had gluten) then yes, it was probably the ice cream. Sometimes I can eat it, sometimes I can't. I would think the whey might be the same thing. If it's just a little bit (that's different from a little bit of gluten) it might be ok for some people. I would advise against...
  16. For snacks, try Lara Bars. They have very few (unprocessed) ingredients. The Apple Pie one I have has ingredients: dates, almonds, unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins and cinnamon. States "gluten, dairy and soy free" on the label. My kids and my friends' kids like them. For a treat, get some chocolate without soy or milk (I think there is such a thing...
  17. I had a positive biopsy and a negative blood test. I think it's very common. Mary/Kara's mom, you can do this. Actually, as an adult it may be harder (or easier) than for kids. But at least you don't have to worry about the kids at the lunch table trying to get you to trade a sandwich or friends at the dorm trying to get you to eat pizza and beer...
  18. Walter, I think since you are Celiac and are still eating wheat that it is not the gluten-free items that are making you feel bad, but the overall state of your digestive system is still messed up. (I don't know anything about Crohn's but eating gluten can't be helping it.) And it won't be easy to tell what else is wrong until you cut out gluten. Then...
  19. Thanks gfp... that backroom restaurant experience is scary. And thanks for the translation- very little Latin language ability here. ~Laura
  20. Tapioca starch and tapioca flour are the same thing (but that is not true about potato starch...it is not the same as potato flour). ~Laura
  21. Doctors- that's a whole thread itself. A breadmaker might be a good way to go if you want bread. There are several recipes here in this site that are good...read the threads first before buying a machine. Here's one Open Original Shared Link and here's another Open Original Shared Link The bread might take a few tries but keep at it and you'll be successful...
  22. Just so no-one misunderstands me, (and I'm not trying to be argumentative here) I don't eat gluten on purpose and if I get any accidentally, it's because I refuse to quit my job, stay home and never eat anywhere but home- like at my in-law's house (they're saints) or at a business lunch or dinner. I have an executive level job- eating out is required. ...
  23. Personally, I have hated anything that is mainly rice flour. Unfortunately, that means a combo of several flours. I now use a combo of sorghum flour, potato starch and tapioca starch as a base for most yeast recipes, and it's more wheat-like than rice. I also use Bob's Red Mill mix or Pamela's Baking Mix for non-yeast recipes. I add almond flour...
  24. My hometown...haven't been back in ages. Glad you had fun. ~Laura
