  1. Thumper, good for you to look for other ideas. You've been given good advice. Couple thoughts: *Can your cardiologist call the GP and have a doc-to-doc talk about a referral? Sometimes a doc will only listen to another doc. *Can you get sub-lingual or IV meds from your cardiologist? *Have you tried peptobismal? The (non-generic) pepto is gluten...
  2. I, too, am interested. BUT... do I whip out the test strip at a restaurant during a business lunch/dinner? And then send the meal back if it registers positive for gluten? I would say it won't eliminate cross-contamination and accidents. It would be more useful as a parlor-trip or to check some home-cooking ingredients. So, I'd probably buy it but...
  3. I had anxiety, rapid pulse and what felt like skipped heartbeats (but I knew it wasn't). I would lay down (to sleep or to nap) and feel my blood rush through my head and the anxiety would be overwhelming. Didn't want to go to the doctor because I didn't want "anxiety disorder" or "hypochondriac" on my medical record. The anxiety (and low-level depression...
  4. Lan, how sweet of you to post and be so helpful! It makes me happy to see such great caring for fellow celiacs. ~Laura
  5. One month may be too quick to see resolution of symptoms, so don't give up hope! Some get immediate relief, others take longer. Confused's advice is good- give up all casein, dairy, soy (for now) and give up processed foods. Don't eat the gluten-free treats or replacement breads. I couldn't eat them for a while, and if I ate too much food or fat at once...
  6. What a great idea! WOW without wheat! They had peanut butter, chocolate chip and brownie flavors. It's a Seattle-based company. I hate going to Starbucks or Tully's because I can never eat anything. This changes things. We tried the peanut butter. The barista said that the chocolate chip was good too. I heard Starbuck's has gluten-free treats...
  7. Magnesium sulfate is what they give pregnant women to stop labor. I'd try supplements, making sure not to get too much as people have indicated. It can also cause diarrhea, so be careful. If you haven't already started sub-lingual B-12 vitamins, you should. I know of no side-effects (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Put one pill under your tongue...
  8. I just read Ravenwoodglass's message about her DD "I feel helpless", and this is the same problem. It's hard to make people understand. My one brother did see that he has symptoms and had the blood tests, which were negative. His doc, bless him, said that the test was unreliable and to try gluten free. Brother said it's cleared up most of his symptoms...
  9. Hi holdthegluten - That is a beautiful baby - is it yours? For cookbooks I've read good things about these; (excerpt from the www.seattletimes.com) "Allergy-Free Cookbook: No Eggs, No Dairy, No Nuts, No Gluten" (DK Publishing, $25) by Alice Sherwood is an indispensable guide for anyone learning to live with allergies. It's full of recipes and useful...
  10. Here's one that I made in my pre-gluten-free days that requires no adjustments -- just make sure all the ingredients are known to be gluten-free. Farmer
  11. Good advice from someone who knows more than I and has experience too.
  12. I love the Chinese Barbecued Pork that you eat with Chinese Hot Mustard and Sesame seeds. About 30 years ago I got a recipe for this but didn't make it because I could just as easily buy it. BUT, luckily, I never throw away recipes. I started craving it so now that I eat gluten free I'm so glad I saved the recipe. I made it today: It is quite tasty and...
  13. I think you may be right. I was always hungry before diagnosis and was continually gaining weight, and others here agree with that. (Others lose weight and can't gain...) Now I am no longer gaining weight and am not always hungry as I was before. I think I was both malnourished and overweight. ~Laura
  14. Gosh, you are a big guy. I only know that when I overeat "for me" in one sitting then I get bad stomach pain. This did not happen before. I also get the big stomach when I overeat and also when I get gluten. I'm not sure if you should eat less-- I'm just not knowledgeable enough and of course I'm not a doctor and I don't know you. A lot of kind...
  15. Like Kbabe I made my own using Gluten Free Girl's recipe Open Original Shared Link and even the gluten-eaters couldn't tell it was gluten free. These are detailed instructions but if you know how to make a roux, you don't even need to read them. GLUTEN-FREE GRAVY 1/4 cup unsalted butter 1/4 cup gluten-free flour* 2 cups chicken stock (or juices...
  16. Hi Joe It could be simple gluten contamination, as others have said. It could also be too much food: Especially when I was newly diagnosed and healing, eating too much would cause me pain for hours and symptoms for a day or so. Nine cookies would kill my stomach. Even now, I have to watch that I don't eat too much in one sitting. You should also eliminate...
  17. For remedies, I swear by mint tea and/or lemon balm tea. (Lemon balm is a relative of mint.) Tastes good, helps the queasy stomach and feels comforting. I don't take immodium unless I am traveling or have a business engagement that I can't miss. I figure my body is trying to get rid of poison for a reason and I don't want to keep it in my body any...
  18. My 14.5yo son has dropped from the 75 percentile in height to below 25% and from 50 percentile in weight to below 25% in two years. He is 5'4' and is one of the shortest kids instead of being among the taller ones - and so skinny. He lost weight in September/October and went gluten free in November, despite the negative blood tests and the GI's disagreement...
  19. Kid, It is overwhelming at times and I think that you are at the worst time in terms of acceptance. One-two months is far enough in to know what you're doing but not be comfortable with it yet; you have made all the sacrifices but still don't feel better (that's 3-6 months minimum); and since you don't have any support you don't see the benefits to continuing...
  20. Hi Melissa, Celiac is genetic. If you have the gene, your children have a chance to have the gene or not (plus what they get from their dad- they could get two if he has it too). Having the gene doesn't mean that one will get celiac- something has to trigger the gene - illness, surgery, stress, car accident or Diabetes I are some possible triggers. ...
  21. Applegate Farms Open Original Shared Link has gluten free, nitrate free pre-packaged lunch-meat. I've gotten it at Whole Foods and some normal Kroeger's type grocery stores. oscar meyer also has a new line of nitrate free, gluten free prepackaged lunch-meats but I haven't seen it at Whole Foods. How about canned tuna or other fish? Progresso Chicken...
  22. FF and Guhlia - you should get a face mask - I learned from a bad experience. There are the paper ones - which aren't any good - but I would recommend the ones that look like gas masks. They sell them for use in woodworking or working with dust and fumes. ~Laura
  23. Liz, what a great idea! You're a natural. You could just network with your naturopath and other naturopaths and make it informal. I agree with others that you have a great background and may not need a formal education. On the other hand, you could check out some classes. I'm up by Bastyr University Open Original Shared Link in Kenmore and they...
  24. Seattle Mama, Yes, after going gluten free my reactions to even a small amount were extreme - worse than when I was on gluten all day, every day. Now after being gluten free for 9 months, I get a reaction but I don't get as sick. This is probably an individual thing, but perhaps the healing helps. P.S. Both Colleen (Cruelshoes) and I are from...
  25. Canadian products can be quite different, I hear. There are a lot of Canadians on this board, so I'd post a question on the "Products" part of this forum. I'm sure you'll get some good help on that. ~Laura
