  1. Peter, you have good points. My points are: 1) Nestle has the ability to certify gluten-free if it wanted to; 2) I know it MAY be gluten-free or is LIKELY to be gluten-free but that is not something that I care to risk, as being ill causes all sorts of problems (missed work, missed family events not to mention internal damage); 3) I choose to support products...
  2. I just checked Nestle online (Lean Cuisine). There are two dinners that don't have "wheat" on the list of included allergens (e.g. "Contains: Wheat, Dairy"). So I was going to buy them (Chicken with almonds and a glazed chicken). But the FAQ page says: "Q. Looking for LEAN CUISINE
  3. This is not true.
  4. I'm glad that I read this. Everyone is so "pro" Udi's because of the taste/convenience. I can eat one slice or 1/2 a bagel but if I eat more I get gluten symptoms. It's too bad really.
  5. I called the restaurant (when they weren't busy) and asked to speak to someone about allergies. The woman asked what and I said celiac/gluten and she said "Me too!" The don't serve gluten-free pasta but they are planning to do so in the future. That's ok because I'm dieting and don't need pasta anyway. She went over which chicken and fish dishes were...
  6. Joe, there's definitely a genetic link, but even if there wasn't you should see a doc soon. From wikipedia: "With DQA1*0501 the allele is most frequently found in coeliac disease. With DR3 this DQ2 has the second strongest linkage to Type 1 diabetes, and when paired with HLA-DQ8 is the most abundant phenotype found in late onset, "Type1-Type2" diabetes...
  7. I've had good gluten-free experiences at Mangiano's and some smaller family owned pasta places (Ellensburg Pasta Co. for one) but haven't been to Buca before. Didn't think I would ever go there but apparently they have a gluten-free menu and I'm going there for a client thank-you lunch tomorrow. (My client went online to research for me - hooray for understanding...
  8. Marc, it's nice of you to help your fellow celiacs/gluten-intolerants. As the parent of a soon-to-be celiac college student I say go for it! Maybe a facebook page would help? Or some posters/electronic notices on campus? I'm not at UCSB (nor will my kids be there) but it's a great idea!
  9. This is the best post! Eilidh is 17 so s/he is better able to speak to this than I(as a middle-aged old person). Whalie, I hope you can get some relief and some comfort from this post.
  10. For those who have heard this story before, my apologies. I asked my son, after he went gluten free, if he noticed any changes and he said "I didn't know that eating wasn't supposed to hurt." That's an awful thing to consider - that he was in pain all those years and I didn't know. I hope you get answers and encourage you to have her try the gluten...
  11. I've never tried anything but the burrito bowl. I skip the lettuce, cheese and anything else that they use their hands on. (I did get glutened when I ordered the cheese first time there.) I also ask them to change their gloves and have never had even a dirty look - I say I'm "allergic" to wheat. And I ask - if they don't offer- the original person to take...
  12. Sorry to say, but your blood test was worse than useless, as it may lead you or your doctor to say that you don't have celiac. You will never know for sure unless you go back on wheat for several months, eating 3+ slices of bread a day. Even then, blood tests are amazingly inaccurate: The celiac blood test is notorious for "false negatives" whereas a positive...
  13. Tian, sorry, a PM is a Personal Message via this forum. I'll send you one so you know what it looks like. I don't have much experience with these issues.
  14. Sorry, I meant the glutenfreeforum in general, not this thread. (This is the "related disorder" forum BTW.) But that's why I suggested a PM to Tian.
  15. As I said above, I also got the "if only you'd lose weight..." comment. I wonder how many male patients would get the same treatment from their docs? A woman posted on a NYTimes blog writing about not being properly diagnosed (not celiac), being made to feel like a hypocondriac said "Never tell a doctor that you have depression or anxiety or stress because...
  16. Nah, that's not true. Rachel24 is an active poster most days. And many posters have notifications set up to see replies that are posted to their threads. Tian, I suggest sending her a PM if you have specific questoins.
  17. I can wear good quality sterling in my ears - have had some bad pieces. I can even wear white gold rings. Watches, necklaces though give me a problem almost 100% of the time...I can't wear sterling or nickel or white gold - only stainless.
  18. I too have a nickel allergy. It could be related to celiac or to having my ears pierced with nickel/white gold posts: They both happened around the same time. See this other thread: MollyBeth, you might want to avoid mineral make-up, which has metals in it. (BareMinerals is the most common but some mainstream makeup has minerals too.)
  19. Yeah, if you're in the U.S., it'll be her last time for Thanksgiving stuffing and pies. The gluten-free versions can be good but take more work. See www.glutenfreegirl.com and Open Original Shared Link for ideas for next year.
  20. Oh, and I forgot to say "Welcome!"
  21. Well, yes and no. The 30th isn't that far away. If she has villi destruction, it is unlikely it would heal in less than two weeks. And if the kid can't eat without extreme pain, it may be hard to convince her to eat wheat bread, wheat pasta etc. But if she's going through the endoscopy, it'd be good to have a true diagnosis for things like ADA accommodations...
  22. I don't have time to post everything, but cruise ships (Royal Carribean, Princess, Celebrity) are all supposed to be pretty helpful. Check the Travel forum here at glutenfreeforum.com for hints and ideas. I went on cruises before gluten-free, but read that you can be ok, but you won't be able to eat much at the buffet and instead will need to go to the...
  23. Rowena, get yourself over to Stephanie's Blog - a Year of Slow Cooking! Open Original Shared Link This woman is a marvel at make-ahead with a crock pot - and every recipe is gluten-free because her daughter is a celiac. True, I wouldn't make everthing in a crock pot but some of her recipes are wonderful. I'm going to make her gluten-free stuffing Open...
  24. The paper that they send you home with after the procedure only says what they "saw" but the biopsy takes time, about a week usually. From what I understand they can "see" ulcerative colitis but microscopic can only be seen under a microscope, as the name says, not via the "scope" used for the colonscopy. I got my results yesterday and I don't have...
